Gebreyes and Yimer visited partners, attended key events in eastern Africa
W ondw ossen Gebreyes, Global One Health initiative's (GOHi) executive director, and Getnet Yimer, regiona l director, attended several events in eastern Africa to build c apacity and foster future collaboration i n the area. The e vents Included:
  • A regional research and training capacity building workshop in Nairobi that was hosted by the NIH Fogarty International Center and the University of Nairobi and Kenya Medical Research Institute.
  • The Global Nutrition Symposium hosted by USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems (LSIL), where leaders from the USAID, LSIL, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, several partner universities and GOHi attended to learn about increasing availability of animal-source foods through greater production and marketing of quality feeds.
  • A kick-off event for the Gates Foundation CAGED Project that aims to improve nutrition, food safety and child health.
  • A site visit to Haramaya University, a partner of the Gates Foundation CAGED Project
  • A strategic planning meeting in GOHi's regional office in Addis Ababa, hosting partners fromTexas A&M, University of Georgia and Cornell University.

2018 Nutrition Symposium
New PhD fellowship offered
The Ohio State University's Global One Health initiative (GOHi) is now offering a new PhD fellowship as part of the  One Health East Africa Research and Training (OHEART) Program.
The OHEART Program, funded by the NIH Fogarty International Center, aims to strengthen and sustain the international research-training program shared between Ohio State and institutes of higher learning in eastern Africa.
The OHEART Program PhD fellowship will begin on April 15 and end in 2022. Priority will be given to the academic or research institutes identified as primary capacity strengthening partners: University of Gondar and Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), University of Nairobi (Kenya) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania), the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. OHEART Fogarty International Training finalizes committee on selection and oversight 

The Fogarty International Training grant's Selection and Oversight Committee has been finalized for the One Health Eastern Africa Research and Training (OHEART)

The committee includes mentors from each specialty OHEART area: scientists in foodborne, vectorborne and waterborne disease research. The committee includes Dr. Rudovick Kazwala (chair), Dr. John Gunn (vice-chair), Dr. Daniel Asrat (secretary), Dr. Belay Tessema, Dr. Ebba Abate, Dr. William Ogara, Dr. Cecilia Mbae, Dr. George Obiero and Dr. Abhay Satoskar.

This committee will collect applications from eligible and interested eastern Africa PhD students to participate in the OHEART fellowship starting this spring through 2022.
Ohio State student organization, Global Health Initiative, connects with GOHi
In late January, Sophia Kiselova-Sammons, co-president of the student-led group, Global Health Initiative (GHI), met with GOHi's Program and Outreach Manager, Ashley Bersani, to discuss potential partnerships between the two groups. Bersani will present about GOHi to the GHI general body on Wednesday, April 4 to further increase the understanding between the two groups and discuss mutually synergistic opportunities. Earn a Graduate Certificate in Global One Health
The College of Public Health and the College of Veterinary Medicine partnered with Ohio State's Global One Health initiative (GOHi) to establish a Graduate Certificate in Global One Health.

This certificate program will provide Ohio State graduate and professional students from any area of focus an opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary education and training focused on addressing global health issues at the interface of human health, animal health and the environment using an integrated One Health approach. 
Candidates will be vetted by a graduate steering committee prior to admission. To be granted the certificate, each admitted student will need to fulfill nine credit hours of required core courses as well as six credit hours from elective courses from a wide range of options. GOHi aims to expand this certificate opportunity to wider strategic partners as well as professionals at large using an online platform.

First Congress of Africa Association for Research and Control of AntiMicrobial Resistance set for February 26 - 28

The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has partnered with the African Association for Research andControl of AntiMicrobial Resistance (AAAMR) to host the first Congress of AAAMR on February 26- 28 at the Hotel Laico Amitié in Bamako, Mali. More information is available online. African bacteriologists, mycologists, parasitologists and virologists working in human and animal health are invited to attend.
 
Please note that the official language of the congress is French, but translations of the presentations will be available in French and English. Presentations can be made in both English and French.
 
Application is open for the Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is currently accepting applications. The Gilman program will award more than 2,900 scholarships of up to $5,000 to undergraduates of limited financial means to study or intern abroad this year. More information is available online.
