Our Growing Global Family
Above are pictures from one year ago, when we hosted three students from China who visited Mrs. Benzing's fifth grade class for two days. This year, we hosted
15
students, who visited our second through fifth grade classes for two
weeks
! Even though we were the hosts, our guests provided our school with classes on many aspects of Chinese culture. Our students learned to write Chinese characters using an ink brush; to make wooden lanterns, which now adorn several of our classrooms in preparation for Chinese New Year; and, this week, to cook dumplings--a two-day process! After starting the meat marinating the day before, our guest parents came in early the next morning to prepare rice and make the dough from scratch, which was then rolled and cut into shape. Our students then saw how dumplings are wrapped and cooked. To top it off, everyone got a chance to try a meal of dumplings with sides of rice, meat, and spinach. A delicious end to a wonderful visit.
Please come join us tomorrow at Gathering, where we will say
再见
(zai jian) "goodbye" and
谢谢
(xie xie) "thank you" one last time, before our friends return home.
Be sure to check out our
Facebook page
with photos and videos from all of the different workshops.

Message from the Nurses
CDC is expecting this year’s flu season to be the worst season since the 2009 H1N1 flu season.
One of the 4 strains in the vaccine, H3N2, has mutated and the vaccine is only 32% effective against this strain. This is the strain that is making people ill.
Flu is rampant in the community now and this is early for Maryland. We have approximately 8 weeks left of flu season.
If your child has any flu like symptoms, please keep them home from school
.
If your child has a confirmed case of the flu, please let the Nurse’s Office know. Remind your children to practice good hand-washing and sneezing into their elbows.
Our nurses recommend getting the flu shot and if you have any questions or concerns to
contact them.
Signs and Symptoms of the flu include:
- Fever, or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
