"I remember the first time I walked into Mrs. Denholm's office. I was just a sophomore entering Cedar Falls High School, with what seemed like the world on my shoulders. I remember her inviting me in with a huge smile on her face. As she motioned for me to sit down, I remember feeling like crying right there in front of her. My future was absolute chaos in my mind and I knew she was going to ask me that question. The question that you fear from the moment you realize that you have to grow up someday. When she asked me, "What do you want to do after you graduate?", I immediately panicked. I began spilling out my anxious sophomore heart with Mrs. Denholm and she just listened. My jumbled nonsense of college, nursing, scholarships, GPA, and ACT all came out in one huge tidal wave. Then, with practiced hands, she began weaving all my questions of uncertainty into a beautiful plan that I have followed to nearly the end of my high school career. Mrs. Denholm gave me calm in the midst of my hurricane of anxiety and uncertainty. Every time I had one feeling of doubt, all I needed to do was send one email. Mrs. Denholm has been there for me every step of the way. She is more than what I ever thought a counselor would be. She is caring, determined, selfless, and a woman that I am proud to call my friend."
The Iowa Bandmasters Association (IBA) announced the 2018 Conference Performing Bands.
Eight Iowa Middle and High Schools Bands are selected to perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference held annually in Des Moines. One band is selected from each of the following categories: Elementary/Beginning Band, 1A/2A Middle School, 3A/4A Middle School, 1A High School, 2A High School, 3A High School, 4A High School, and High School Jazz Band. Bands submit applications for performance in early January and are notified of selection. These bands are considered to be the premier performing ensembles in Iowa schools and selection to perform at the IBA Conference is one of the highest honors awarded in the state of Iowa.
Cedar Falls Jazz One from CFHS has been selected as the 2018 performing jazz band. This 19 student ensemble is under the direction of Mr. Kyle Engelhardt. Prior appearances at IBA by Cedar Falls High School include a performance by Cedar Falls Jazz One at the 2015 IBA Conference, and the Wind Symphony (Gerald Ramsey, conductor) was a clinic band for the Young Conductor's Symposium in 2016. The CFHS Band program is co-directed by Kyle Engelhardt and Gerald Ramsey.
Performances will take place at the 91st Annual conference May 10-12, 2018 at the Des Moines Marriot Downtown.

Character Counts Calls for Annual Awards Nominations
The Cedar Valley Character Counts Committee is calling for nominations for its annual Character Awards. The awards honor Cedar Valley individuals and businesses in six categories. These representatives consistently demonstrate good character through being their best self (moral character) and doing their best work (performance character). Also honored will be one student age 10 through 17 who has demonstrated what good character means to them. These awards, with the exception of the Youth Citizen award, are based on the state awards given annually by the Robert D. and Billy Ray Center at Drake University.
Categories include:
Business/Organization of Character, which is presented to an organization (including non-profit) that demonstrates a commitment to good character in its professional culture and climate;
Adult Citizen of Character, presented to a Cedar Valley resident whose actions demonstrate a continuous commitment to good character;
Youth Citizen of Character, presented to one student who has demonstrated adherence to the Six Pillars;
Educator of Character, presented to an educator or administrator who teaches and models good character and has impacted students through leadership and innovative character development;
Pursuing Victory With Honor, presented to an athletics team, coach, student-athlete or organization that demonstrates commitment to sportsmanship and good character;
School of Character, presented to a school whose faculty, staff and students practice good character; and
Environmental Steward of Character, presented to an individual or organization (including non-profit) that demonstrates commitment to preserving our environment for future generations.
The Six Pillars of Character include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
Winners will be recognized at a banquet to be held
April 16 at Hawkeye Community College-Tama Hall.

My name is Sarah Byerly and I'm a health assistant at Orchard Hill Elementary. Before joining Orchard Hill, I was a paraeducator in the Hudson school system and worked with kindergarten for three years, 1st grade for one year and preschool for half a year.
I went to Hawkeye Community College for professional photography and I still do photography on the side. I shot 16 weddings last year!
My boyfriend Tony and I enjoy going to the gym together and traveling. He has a three-year-old son named James and we have two 80 lb dogs that are full of energy and keep us busy!
I feel very welcomed and honored to work with everyone in the Cedar Falls School District!
Influenza
Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection that affects mainly the nose, throat, chest and lungs. The flu may cause mild to severe illness, and even lead to death. In the very young, the elderly, and those with other serious medical conditions, infection can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia. Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine, and it's not too late! Getting vaccinated is not just about protecting yourself, but also protecting those around you: family members, friends, classmates, teachers, and others in your community.
Symptoms of influenza include:
Fever (typically ≥100° F)
Headache
Extreme tiredness
Dry cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle aches
Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur but are more common in children than adults
Students diagnosed with influenza should not return to school or activities until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Fever free is considered to be less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Our day camps are the perfect place to try new mediums and make projects to take home! Snacks provided in the morning and afternoon. Students must bring a sack lunch.
