Much of the oxygen in Washington this week was consumed by attempts to keep the government from shutting down on Saturday. Republicans and Democrats are struggling to come to an agreement that will likely have to address both the expired Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump rescinded last year. As of late Friday afternoon no deal had been reached.
Those interested in agricultural industry in the Mississippi River Basin and around the country have been anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation talks, which could have large implications for the industry if President Trump follows through on his threats to scrap the deal. Negotiations will resume next week in Montreal.
