Wait Lists for Online Summer Term Courses
Summer term enrolment began on February 5th. In the past we have not been able to use wait lists when there is a reserve capacity on the course. However, in one of the recent PeopleSoft upgrades this changed and now all of our online courses offered this summer will have wait lists.
Here is an example of how it will work: ECON111 has a maximum enrolment of 100. Ten spaces in the class have been reserved for students in the DIST career; leaving the remaining 90 spaces open to anyone.
Scenario 1: Ninety non-DIST students enroll in the class; the remaining 10 seats are reserved for DIST students. The next non-DIST student who tries to enroll will get an error stating that the class is full and would then have the option of going on the wait list. It will not allow that student to steal a spot from the DIST reserve. Once all 10 DIST seats are filled, then both the non-DIST and DIST students will have the option of joining the wait list.
Scenario 2: The 10 seats reserved for DIST have filled but there is still room in the 90 non-DIST seats. The next DIST student will be allowed to enroll in the class since the 90 non-DIST seats are not reserved. Those 90 are available to anyone, including a DIST student.
We are working to update the Wait List FAQs on our website and plan to have them updated in time for registration.

Survey of Telephone Requirements at Queen's
Queen's is planning to replace the aging telephone system.
We are using this survey to ask representatives of the various telephone user groups to validate and prioritize requirements collected through previous efforts and define any additional requirements. We anticipate that completing the survey should take you no more than 10 minutes. Please feel free to distribute the survey to any others in your area that you think should be included. The survey will be available until February 12th, 2018.

Senate Committee Vacancies - Reminder
All existing Senate committee vacancies are listed on the
vacancies page
. The application deadline is February 9, 2018.
- Committee terms are usually for two years, with the number of meetings per year depending on the particular committee's area of responsibility.
- Most terms will start September 1, 2018, but any exceptions are listed next to the committee name on the vacancies page.
Senate committees discuss issues of broad interest to the academic community and make recommendations on policy and practice that are essential to the university's operations and evolution. Committee work allows members to directly affect the way Queen's functions as a teaching and research institution, and as a community of scholars, students, and staff.

Updated Student Privacy Protocol
Please see
the attached presentation with an update to slide #10. It has recently been confirmed that
doctors' notes, or any documentation received from a health care professional for the purposes of academic accommodations, is personal information collected under FIPPA, and not a collection of personal health information (PHI) under the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
While we still need to treat such sensitive personal information with appropriate care, the implications are (a) we would not be required by law to report any breaches of this information to the individual concerned or to the IPC (although generally we would notify the individual), and (b) the level of security required for PI is not as high as for PHI which could translate into less expensive IT requirements.
The advice that all mobile devices (cellphones, tablets, laptops) used for university business be encrypted still stands, as does the requirement to share personal information on a need-to-know basis only.

First Aid and CPR Training
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety will be offering First Aid & CPR (Standard level -2 day)
training.
This training is available to Queen's Staff, Faculty and Graduate students. Training will be conducted in Faculty and Staff Learning Facility, located in Complex B176of
Mackintosh-Corry
Hall, Seminar Room. Training is scheduled to run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.
There is no cost to attend this course, however, a valid account code is required to register.
You are eligible for Standard 2-day First Aid if you have never taken First Aid, or your certification has expired.
Standard (2-day) First Aid
training will be offered on the following dates:
- February 22 & 23 (Thurs & Fri)
- March 15 & 16 (Wed & Thurs)
- April 17 & 18 (Tues & Wed)

2018 Principal's Dream Course
Proposals are invited for courses that address at least one of the identified themes:
- Sustainability
- Indigenous Identities
- Diversity of perspectives
The purpose of this course redesign program is to enhance already-existing undergraduate courses in a way that encourages undergraduate research and inquiry as key approaches to learning.
Awards provide up to $15,000 in one-time funding to develop the course of your dreams that directly support both the overall academic mission of Queen's University and the strategic goals related to enhancement of the learning experience of its students. Deadline: February 12, 2018

2018 Chancellor A. Charles Baillie Teaching Award
Deadline: March 1, 2018
Awarded annually to full or part-time Queen's faculty members for
activities that lead to improved student learning,
including:
- Curriculum development
- Educational leadership
- Design and delivery of out-of-class educational experiences
- Classroom teaching and supervision
Faculty may be nominated by a peer or academic administrator, or may self-nominate.

Scholarships for study and research in China: Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program, 2018-2019
Global Affairs Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Education are offering short-term scholarships to Canadians wishing to study abroad or do research in China. Scholarships are awarded for studies, research, language studies or a combination of studies and language studies at participating Chinese institutions. The program is aimed at Canadian students (undergraduate and graduate), Canadian faculty members and research staff at post-secondary institutions and Canadian mid-career professionals. The duration of the program is 4 to 12 months for students and 8 weeks to 12 months for faculty members and mid-career professionals. The scholarship funds are eligible for airfare, tuition fees, monthly living stipend, on-campus accommodation and medical insurance. The deadline for applications is 6 March 2018.

Call for applications: Principal's Development Fund 2018-19
Please note the changes to the fund in the Terms of Reference, available at the above link. The number of categories has been reduced from three to two. Category 1 provides funds to host incoming international visitors from around the world, including from the Matariki Network of Universities (MNU). Category 2 will fund Queen's faculty members to visit MNU institutions, and applications in this category can now be submitted on a rolling basis. Funds have been reallocated to increase the opportunities overall in both categories. Note that in Category 1 competition, faculty members are invited to submit an application and budget to their respective Faculty Dean by April 23, 2018. For Category 2, Department Head signature is required for all submissions.

Call for Nominations: Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching This award is given annually to a Queen's teacher who, in the view of his/her students and colleagues, demonstrates superior abilities as a teacher and commitment to effective learning. The winner receives a statue and $5,000. The deadline for nominations and supporting documentation is February 23, 2018.
