The Quest for the Tenth Bishop of Maine
The Diocesan Discernment Committee has invited us to participate in an open
conversation to help them in the Bishop Search Process. The responses we
provide will be used in creating a profile that describes our diocese to potential
candidates for Bishop, and will help clarify the qualities we are asking for in
our next Bishop.
Following Sunday's service we will gather to discuss the open-ended questions
below. For our seasonal members and those who are away or traveling,
I urge you to also think about and respond to these questions, and send them
to me via email ( [email protected]) or via hard copy to my attention at the church
office: P.O. Box 305, Deer Isle, ME 04627. Please have your input to me by
February 19th. As requested by the Diocesan Discernment Committee, parish
responses are to be summarized and submitted back to them by February 26th.
Please think and pray about these questions for discussion:
1. Who are you as a parish?
What do you value and how do you demonstrate that?
What stories/foundational events have shaped you?
What do you want the new bishop to know about you?
2. Where do you want to go as a parish?
How close are you to getting there?
What gifts do you have that will help you get there?
What challenges lie in your path?
3. How would you describe your parish's relationship with the diocese?
What would you like your relationship to be in the future?
What qualities in a bishop would facilitate this relationship?

Lenten Book Discussions February 18-March 18
The first discussion of our Lenten Book
"Pilgrim Road: A Benedictine Journey
Through Lent" by Albert Holtz will be held Sunday, February 18, following the morning service. Please read "Setting Out" pages 3-18 for our discussion. Narrative and Reflection suggestions will help lead us into Lent. Please bring your responses and questions.

Ash Wednesday Service
St. Brendan's will mark the beginning of our Lenten season with a lay-led Ash
Wednesday service at 4pm on February 14th. This brief, lay-led meaningful
service includes the imposition of ashes and congregational participation.
This is an opportunity for each of us to join together and to prepare for
Lent and the Easter season to follow.
All are welcome to attend!
The Worship Committee is again asking for a volunteer to help Connie with
the Nursing Home Service on Sunday, March 11, at 2:00. We have prepared
a very brief outline of what is to be done if it would be helpful to anyone.
The service is short, mainly music, but needs leadership and a helper. Please
contact Mickey if you are willing to volunteer for March 11. This could be an
excellent Lenten contribution.
Skip Greenlaw recently volunteered at the Nursing Home Service and with Connie
shares the following:
It's the Little Things That Matter

Joan Maxwell recently wrote in an email that Woody Osborne's "epistles" which
he authored while he was senior warden were important for her keeping in touch
with St. Brendan's when she was not on the island.
The following event took place on Sunday afternoon, January 14, 2018 at 2 PM at
the Island Nursing Home (INH). We think that this might fall into the category of
"what is going on at St. Brendan's" and might be of interest to everyone.
One of St. Brendan's oldest ministries is sharing responsibility with other island
churches for offering a service for INH residents. Connie has been the staple of
this ministry for some time with sometimes help from members. A call went out to accompany Connie on January 14 or this ministry would be terminated.
We arrived at 2 PM at INH. As we walked in the door, Skip was greeted by a
resident and old friend of 45 years whom Skip had not seen for more than a year.
"I know that fella", he said with a smile on his face. Talk about a warm welcome
and making this fella feel like a million dollars!!!
We gathered the residents into the dining room and distributed hymnals to a dozen residents. Connie introduced us as members of St. Brendan's and announced the
first hymn. Connie did a wonderful job of communicating the gist of the hymns and
the hope which the gospel gives us.
At the end of the hymns, Connie asked if anyone remembered singing any of the
hymns in churches they attended. Yes, some remembered the hymns. Connie
inquired about what church they attended on the island. There were several
responses. A woman, who was not an INH resident, said that her brother had
recently invited her to go to church and that she was pleased to have this invitation
and enjoyed the experience. What a wonderful response! Skip asked himself when
was the last time I asked anyone to go to church. Many of the residents thanked us
for coming and singing with them.
As Skip was leaving, he encountered his friend who greeted him at the door. With
tears in his eyes he said that he "couldn't do anything anymore". Skip told him
that he had done more than his share and had been very successful. Skip told
him how happy he was to see him and that he would return for another visit soon.
So we might have thought that our presence was not a big deal, but for the
residents it was a very big deal. Two people took the time to come and sing with
them. The woman who was invited to go to church reminds us all how very important
it is to ask someone if they would like to go to church. Sometimes, all the encouragement anyone needs is an invitation. We are constantly reminded that very often the effort
we make to shine some light on someone else is returned to us many times over.
The next time that it is St. Brendan's turn to have a service at the INH, Skip will
join Connie and we hope others will take the time to join us.

Third Thursday Music Gatherings
A series of monthly creative music gatherings will begin next Thursday
February 15th from 6-8pm at Saint Brendan's hall. Organized by Deer Isle
residents Tom van Buren and Hank Whitsett (Mountainville Records), the
monthly sessions provide a stage for creative musicians and singers in multiple
genres to come together to share a tune - folk, blues, jazz and beyond.
The gatherings continue the third Thursdays of the month, March 15, April 19,
May 17 and June 21st.
All are welcome to come listen and enjoy! Donations are welcome.

Scripture Notes for the Last Sunday After Epiphany:
On this final Sunday after the Epiphany the Transfiguration of Christ is
t
he central theme. This event was the most striking manifestation of Jesus'
divine identity during the days of his ministry. It was also in this event that Jesus
made his first clear reference to his approaching death and resurrection, which is
the reason we commemorate it on the Sunday before Lent. The two greatest men
of God from the past, Moses and Elijah, joined him, representing the law and the
prophets, God's primary means of self-revelation prior to Jesus, and discussed
with him what lay ahead.
The Old Testament reading is the account of the prophet Elijah's departure
into heaven leaving his ministry to his disciple Elisha. Jewish belief in the days
of Jesus was that this, the greatest of the old prophets, would one day reappear
to signal the coming of the Messiah.
In the second reading, Paul describes the presence of Jesus in our lives as
the light of God.We are to be transfigured by Jesus that his light may shine
forth from us.

We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community,
remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem;
Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry;
and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
