February is Black History Month

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987)
Bayard Rustin was a master community organizer who was instrumental in the planning and execution of the March on Washington in 1963. Although less well known than others involved in the March, Rustin was the genius who coordinated from behind the scenes.

Due to his open homosexuality, he was seen as an outsider during the civil rights era and was often discounted and shunned by his peers.

In addition to fighting for equal rights for African-Americans, Rustin fought passionately for gay and lesbian rights, and for the plight of Soviet Jews trapped in communist Russia during the 1980s.

In recognition of this dedication to these causes, Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2013.
