Bayard Rustin (1912-1987)
|
|
Due to his
open homosexuality, he was seen as an outsider during the civil rights era and was often discounted and shunned by his peers.
In addition to fighting for equal rights for African-Americans, Rustin fought passionately for gay and lesbian rights, and for the
plight of Soviet Jews trapped in communist Russia during the 1980s.
In recognition of this dedication to these causes, Rustin was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2013.
