This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results on the question of .....:
Do you prefer reps coming in to see you or just ringing at the end of the month when they are trying to make budget?:
  • I prefer them contacting me when they have something new to show or tell me about. The odd phone call is fine and calling in occasionally. But more importantly when I need help or info RESPOND!
  • As a rep myself, I'm looking forward to these answers.
From my point of view, it is getting harder to get meetings because there are a lot of reps and a lot of suppliers - let's face it, who has time to see all of us?
It's the same for me - who wants to visit customers that reckon they can't make money out of pull up banner stands - but still do banner stands. A customer gained on price is easily lost on price so I'll leave them for someone else.
Personally, I only like to visit the more innovative companies that make sure the product they are buying must be fit for purpose before the price is discussed. They are generally targeting high quality end users themselves and know that using a good high-quality product keeps their good high-quality end user happy.
We get a large amount of end users contacting us through the website. I am always happy to specify a product and then pass them on to a good reliable customer of mine to look after them.
Who'd have thought that a rep could be an extra sales person not on the pay roll?
    The smart operators do.
  • I always prefer reps coming in to see me, to be honest. If they make the effort, then it shows they appreciate my business. I will usually buy while they are here if they are selling something I use or a new product that looks interesting. It also gives me a chance to build good relationships. When sign shops realize that experienced reps are actually a bonus to their business, their own business will benefit overall. I have some great reps call, and every one of them is welcome anytime. (Shane, DSI)
  • We tend to place larger orders at the beginning of the month and reassess our requirements in the 3rd week of the month. I am often amazed at how many reps call in to see us and do not have a clue at what we actually purchase from them or at the frequency we actually purchase.
  • Sales Rep's only bother to come to your workplace if you are going to order $20,000 worth of product.
One of our major suppliers rings us about twice a month with any specials or to see if we need anything in particular, we would prefer this way the best so we are not abliged to stop work everytime they knock on your door.
  • Prefer a visit - depending upon volume - if high then monthly, if low then when they are in the area.
  • It pays to be friends with our suppliers so yes, they are welcome and the good reps know when you are busy in which case they only stay as long as it takes to get there message across.
  • Prefer calling to see me. I understand they also have a role to fulfil however some like to chat for 20 minutes or so and its usually a huge inconvenience. (Justin, Just Signs)

Smile: It's Monday!
(If you have a good joke or funny video for this section, please send to  - Thanks)

A doctor and a lawyer are talking at a party. Their conversation is constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice.
After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asks the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?"
"I give it to them," replies the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill."
The doctor is shocked, but agrees to give it a try.
The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepares the bills.
When he goes to place them in his mailbox, he finds a bill from the lawyer.
