Reading Patrick O'Brian in January

Continuing the Patrick O'Brian Wednesday afternoon reading groups at the Tiverton Library, on January 10, 2018 at 1pm,  we will look into DESOLATION ISLAND, the fifth book in the 20-book series of historic novels that began with MASTER AND COMMANDER.

Whether you are on O'Brian enthusiast or have read one or two in the past, you are invited to participate in our review. Each book stands alone.

It is rich literature, some of the best in historic novels.  The setting is the British Navy in the time of Napoleon.  The stories take us all over the world of the early 1800's, including actual battles, political intrigue and romances. Music, food, the natural sciences and humor are also woven into the narrative.

DESOLATION ISLAND focuses on a passage through the "Roaring Forties", the wildness and desolation of the 'Southern Ocean', where winds blow from the west, unimpeded, for thousands of miles,  south of the large continents.  The sailing scenes are magnificent and will make your blood run cold!  There is but one battle in all of this, but it is epic in this genre of literature.

These groups are participatory, so staying on the same page is important.  The version we use is an early American edition by Norton, 325 pages, paperback or hardcover. The covers are distinctive with beautiful Geoff Hunt artwork from edge to edge.  These are usually available at your local library or in many second-hand book shops or from your favorite on-line bookseller.

As the room we use can accommodate a dozen or so, be sure to register early, with your name and email address.  You will receive an acknowledgement and information on companion materials, reviews and other pertinent books.  Your questions at any time are welcome. We hope you can join us!  Harris Gruber is the facilitator Please contact him at  varnishman@gmail.com to register.  This series continues on January 17, 24, and 31.

  Tiverton Library Foundation - Update
Barbara Donnelly and Leslie Hudson

Many thanks to retiring Foundation Board members Barbara (whose storied tenure as a Trustee is described at tivertonlibrary.org/barbara-donnelly-leaving-after-40-years-on-the-library-board-of-trustees/) and Leslie (who represented Partners Insurance and BayCoast Bank, a major donor for the new Library) for their years of unfailing service. We wish them happiness in the next stages of their lives!
The Champlin Foundation has awarded a grant of $16,000 for the Library Mural Project. The large mural in the lobby and six related ones in the Children's Room will depict the essence of Tiverton. The community, from tots to seniors, created personalized tiles at over 100 workshops that will be incorporated into the murals. About $16,000 is needed to complete the project. Can you be a part of this by making a gift of any size to the Library Foundation?

Foundation Volunteers Invited. If you are interested in serving on the Foundation Board for one year or longer to support the Library, please see the simple application
Tiverton Library Foundation application for Board 2018.

Our Library as Community Center - Spreading Holiday Comfort & Joy
The community room at the Tiverton Public Library was transformed into a "Giving Market" for families in need through Amicable Church's Thanksgiving Basket Project. Library patrons, through Food for Fines, and dozens of other organizations contributed to the project which provided 700 meals including 117 frozen turkeys!
A big thank you for helping fill -- and refill 10 times over -- the Friends holiday gift box in the library lobby from Nov 8 to Dec 8. Eleven large sacks of spanking new gifts for children and infants were delivered in December to East Bay Community Action in support of WIC and other programs.

Save the Date - Vaudeville Comes to Friends Annual Meeting
February 21 @ 6:30 pm.
Immediately after the meeting is called to order, enjoy a presentation of the hilarious vaudeville sketch "Niagra Falls" which was famously performed by Abbott and Costello and The Three Stooges. Presented by Your Theatre, New Bedford, and starring Dennis J. Smith, Tony Oliva and Stephanie Paquette, and directed by Ed Maguire. Paid for by the Friends, Your Theatre is raising funds to move to New Bedford's historical First Baptist Church. Did you know that church launched the first meeting using Roberts Rules of Order? It also became the site of lectures by famous historical figures, including former slave and author/activist Frederick Douglass.
The annual meeting is a recap of Friends activities, fundraising and support to the library and an opportunity to award individuals and organizations who have gone the extra mile to help the library better serve our community. The meeting is always open to the public and refreshments are served.

January Friends Board Meeting
The January monthly meeting of the Friends board will be held offsite at the home of a Friends member. Call the library for details, tel 625-6796.
