The sports community is still in shock after the court proceedings against Larry Nassar for his sexual abuse of young gymnasts.
In the midst of this case filled with devastating details of abuse and systemic inaction, a group of unexpected
heroes emerged.
The gymnasts
- survivors -
who shared victim impact statements opened our eyes to the magnitude of this systemic problem of abuse. Their strength, courage, and united voice has created a sea change in how all sports organizations will work to prevent and respond to sexual abuse. The gymnasts have stepped forward and shared their own painful experiences and memories to ensure future generations of athletes are protected from the abuse they themselves had to endure.
In honor of their courage and determination to change the culture of abuse, GSD is recognizing this group of survivors with our
Humanitarian Award
- our most prestigious award. As part of this recognition, we are donating
$1 Million
towards the creation of an educational program focused on changing the culture of sport and preventing future abuse.
