February  2018

Classes are underway and your student is beginning to understand course expectations as midterm examinations begin. While these exams serve to show your student and faculty the content they are retaining, it is also not too late for them to seek additional support through faculty office hours or on-campus tutoring. Encourage them to visit the CLASS (Center for Learning And Student Success) Office or meet with their professor during their dedicated office hours.

February also serves as a time to speak with your student about Spring Break plans. Spring Break, for FAU students, occurs March 5-11. We like to encourage parents and families to speak with their student about Spring Break safety, should your student be traveling. For students that are returning home for Spring Break, it is also beneficial to have conversations about family expectations when they are in town.

The Office of Parent and Family Programs is seeking  parent volunteers
to represent FAU Parents at
Choose FAU Day on March 23 and March 30.

Choose FAU is an event that allows admitted freshmen students the opportunity to have an in-depth FAU experience.  It provides future students a chance to learn more about the University before making
a final college choice.

Parent volunteers will assist the Office of Parent and Family Programs during their mid-day student showcase session. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email owlparents@fau.edu

University Advising Services (UAS) helps your student develop and implement an academic plan for success at FAU.  Our advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model, which is the intentional practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience and achieve their DREAMS, DESIGN a plan to achieve those dreams, and make necessary changes to ACHIEVE their goals.  The advisee and advisor are partners, and below are a few tips on how you can be an APPRECIATIVE PARTNER with your FAU student.

Suggestions for Being a Parent/Family Partner In February
  • Discover: Ask open ended questions about classes and college life. You can ask what their favorite classes are, what types of course assignments they've enjoyed doing the most, what has surprised them the most, and how they spend their time outside of class.

"During these next years, your role as a parent and the relationship with your son or daughter will change. College students are expected to be self sufficient and independent. They will nevertheless continue to need parental guidance and support. You will remain the primary influence in your student's life, but at a greater distance. Although away at college, knowing that you are there for assistance and encouragement is extremely important. As your role as a parent changes and your son or daughter develops and grows, the two of you will develop a new adult relationship based on mutual respect, shared interests, and the bonds of family" (Farber & O'Brien, 2017).
