A Message from the Superintendent
|
I want to remind each of you that the Texas Primaries are fast approaching as March 6th is Election Day. Early voting begins on February 20th. House District 89 has been represented by Representative Jodie Laubenberg. Jodie is not running for re-election; therefore, we will have new representation. The same is true for Senate District 8 which was held by Senator Van Taylor who is not running for re-election. I encourage you to research the choices and vote for the candidate you believe will best represent HD 89 and SD 8.

The Annual Denim and Diamonds (D&D) event is scheduled for April 7th. This fundraising event and gala contributes a large amount to the teacher grants which the Foundation gives annually. It is always the goal of the Foundation to have sufficient sponsorships to cover the cost of the event so that all proceeds from that night go to the Foundation to be used for teacher grants. Sponsorships come in two forms:

The first annual Lovejoy STEM Festival will be held at Lovejoy High School on Saturday, March 3rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This will be a great opportunity to come see, do, and learn all about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Lovejoy ISD. The STEM Council has planned various guest speakers, demonstrations, competitions, Makerspace opportunities, and robotics experiences for a fun, engaging day for students and adults of Lovejoy and beyond.
While we are still finalizing details for the day, we would appreciate your support and participation. If you work in the STEM fields and are interested in volunteering or being a guest speaker, please help us make this a wonderful day of learning and fun.

Lovejoy's Mock Trial team concluded its season on Saturday. During the regional quarterfinals, Brandon Su was named Region 10's best advocate with Polly Roth earning the second spot. Zach Brown was named one of the best witnesses for the region. The team qualified for the semifinals, but lost to Frisco CTE in that round.
Team Members are Seniors Brandon Su, Polly Roth, Zach Brown, Mikey Franks, and Abel Thomas, Junior Sydney Wong, Sophomores Mattie Roth, and Nick Dodda, and Freshman Amelia Flinchbaugh.

Lovejoy Speech & Debate hosted the 2018 LBJ NSDA (National Speech & Debate Association) District National Qualifying Tournament this past weekend. Participating schools competed to represent the LBJ District and Texas at the NSDA National Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida this June for the chance to become national champions. Congratulations to the Lovejoy High School Speech & Debate team for winning the award for Debate Sweepstakes Team.

March 2nd
Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual Taste of Fairview will be presented by Estate Life Magazine in partnership with the Allen Fairview Chamber, Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club, and the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools.
What: 3rd Annual Taste of Fairview with over 30 local restaurants, wine and spirits
Where: Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club

Why: All ticket sales donated to the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools
Last year's event was a sell-out, with more than 500 attendees helping to raise more than $17,000 for the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools.
This year's goal is the same: great food and great people coming together for an incredible evening benefiting Lovejoy schools.

Denim and Diamonds - Lone Starry Night
April 7th
Through your generosity and support, the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools awarded grants totaling $451,100 to teachers for use in their classrooms this year. The Foundation is funded primarily from Annual Appeal and the Denim and Diamonds (D&D) Gala and Auction. The Foundation's goal this year is to cover D&D costs with sponsorships prior to the night of the event so all monies spent at the event go directly to fund classroom grants.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host a raffle for three great prizes, which includes:
- $2500 VISA gift card - donated by Owens Realtors
- EZ Go Golf cart - Completely Remodeled and Refurbished Model 2014 TXT-PDS with 2014 upbody with flip seating, new batteries, tires and LED head/tail lights. New factory-painted, flame-red body. EC Custom Carts - value $5,000
- Arcade Game Table - Designed like original arcade table from the 80s. Table can be customized, featuring officially licensed graphics of favorite College, Pro Team, etc. - value $4,400
Raffle tickets are $100. Only 500 tickets will be sold. A drawing will be held for each item, giving each ticket a chance to win one of these prizes. The winners will be drawn at the Denim and Diamonds Gala. You do not need to be present to win.

LHS Band
The LHS band Ensemble competition will be held on Saturday, February 24th at the Lovejoy High School Band Hall. Best wishes to our band ensembles.

LHS Choir
The Lovejoy High School Choir hosted the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest this past Saturday. Approximately 400 performers competed from Region 25, and it was a very successful day for our singers. Lovejoy High School brought home 77 medals for first division ratings, and there were 16 State-qualifying soloists and 3 State-qualifying ensembles.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of our nation's youth, and have provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Each year, increasing numbers of teens participate in the program, and become a part of a community - young artists and writers, filmmakers and photographers, poets and sculptors, video game artists and science fiction writers, along with countless educators who support and encourage the creative process.
Through the Scholastic Awards, teens in grades 7 through 12 from public, private, or home schools may apply in 29 categories of art and writing for their chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited and published. Since its founding, the Awards have established an amazing track record for identifying the early promise of our nation's most accomplished and prolific creative leaders. Alumni include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick, and John Baldessari; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Bernard Malamud, Myla Goldberg, and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, Lena Dunham, and John Lithgow; fashion designer Zac Posen; and filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns, and Richard Linklater.
It is with great excitement that Lovejoy Visual Arts adds more names to that list for 2018 than ever before.

WSMS and LHS Winter Guard
The Willow Springs Middle School and Lovejoy High School Color Guards began their competition season in January 2018 at the Frisco Centennial Contest. This was the first of several competitions across the DFW metroplex for both teams. The Willow Springs team earned second place in the Cadet Classification. The Lovejoy High School team placed third in the Scholastic A Classification.
The Willow Springs Middle School Winter Guard's next performance is February 9th at Sachse High School.
The Lovejoy High School Winter Guard's next performance is February 10th at Coppell High School. This is a very special competition for the team, as they will be competing at the Winter Guard International - Dallas Regional. This is a first in the school's history for the LHS team to compete at a national event.

Lovejoy Boys Basketball
The Lovejoy Leopard Boys Basketball team defeated the Royse City Bulldogs last night at Leopard Gym 58-34 to move into the fourth place slot in the District 15-5A standings. The Leopards travel to Highland Park on Friday to take on the Scots, who currently are in third place in district.
The JV Black team defeated the Royse City JV last night at Leopard Gym 54-47. They will travel to Highland Park on Friday to battle the Scots.
The Freshmen Leopards defeated the Bulldogs 74-31 last night at Leopard Gym. The win brings the Leopards' district record to 12-0.

Lovejoy Girls Basketball
The Lady Leopards played their last home game of the season on Friday night vs Mesquite Poteet. Before the game, all seniors and their parents were recognized for their contributions to the program. The Lady Leopards have 10 seniors on the team this year which is the largest senior class in Lady Leopard Basketball history.
The Lady Leopards completed their 2018 regular season with a 49-44 victory over the Royse City Lady Bulldogs last night in Royse City. The win secured a position in the upcoming State Girls Basketball Playoffs. The Lady Leopards will take on the Mount Pleasant Lady Tigers in the Bi-District Round of the playoffs on Monday night February 12th at Will Points High School Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
The JV Lady Leopards defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Royse City last night 50-33. The JV team has now completed their season with a 22-5 season record and will now assist the Varsity Leopards during the State Playoff run.
The Lady Leopards JV Red finished their season off with one of their best games of the season as they defeated the Mesquite Poteet Lady Pirates 46-19. The Lady Leopards finished the season with an overall record of 11-10 and a district record of 4-1.
Congratulations to all of the Lady Leopard Basketball teams for another exciting and successful season.

Lovejoy Golf
The Girls Golf Team played at Rockwall Athletic Club, the Region 2 Preview Tournament to start the 2018 spring season. The team shot a total 429 on the day. The Lady Leopards finished 11th out of 16 teams. Team Captain Allie Bianchi shot 83, good for a T-3 finish individually.
The Boys Varsity Golf Team will play this Friday and Saturday at the Rockwall Athletic Club. Results will be in next week's Email Express.
The JV Boys 3 Team will play today at Duck Creek Golf Club, weather permitting.

Lovejoy Powerlifting
The Lovejoy Boys and Girls powerlifting teams traveled to North Forney High School to compete in the North Forney Invitational Meet. The Leopard Boys finished fifth out of 15 teams. The Boys and Girls will travel to Ft. Worth for their next meet on February 10th at Ft. Worth Castleberry High School.

Lovejoy Boys Soccer
Last week, the Boys Varsity Soccer team started district play with a win vs Highland Park 2-1. On Friday, the Leopards tied West Mesquite 1-1 and lost in the penalty shootout. The Varsity Leopards are now 4-2-2 overall and will play Forney tonight (February 7th) at Leopard Stadium. Tonight's game is the annual Teacher Appreciation Night, scheduled for 7:30 PM.
The Junior Varsity team beat Highland Park Tuesday night 3-0, bringing the Junior Varsity's record to 7-1 overall. The JV will also take on the Jackrabbits from Forney tonight at 5:30 PM.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
Lovejoy had a tough start to district facing the defending state champions at Highland Park on Tuesday. The final score was 9-1. The Lady Leopards rebounded with a win against the Lady Wranglers of West Mesquite 2-0. This evens the Leopards District 15-5A record to 1-1.
The JV Lady Leopards fell to Highland Park 8-0 and then tied West Mesquite 1-1 last week.
The Lady Leopards travel to Forney tonight (February 7th) to take on the Jackrabbits. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 PM for the JV team and 7:30 PM for the Varsity.

Lovejoy Swim and Dive
The Lovejoy Leopard Swim Team competed at the 5A Region II Swim Meet on Friday and Saturday last week. The Boys Team finished in 6th place, while the Girls Team finished in 4th place. Region II is one of the fastest Regions in the state of Texas for swimming. The Leopards will advance the following swimmers to the State Meet in Austin: Jed Jones, James Vaughn, Sam Veitch and Jakob Feldman will represent the boys team, while Natalie Womack, Raime Jones, Sydney Myers and Sloan Carevic will represent the girls team. The State meet is scheduled for February 16th and 17th at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center located at The University of Texas at Austin. We wish all our Swimmers the best as they compete and represent Lovejoy ISD at the State Meet.

Lovejoy Tennis
Last week, the Lovejoy Junior Varsity Tennis Team won the Grapevine Invitational Tournament winning two draws and finished second in three other draws. The Lovejoy Varsity Tennis team traveled to Ennis and won two draws as well. Congratulations to Samantha Hayward and Daniela Benigno - girls' doubles, and Brandon Su and Polly Roth - mixed doubles, for winning back-to-back tournaments this spring. The team travels to Flower Mound Marcus to compete in the Marcus Tournament today (February 7th).

The Boys and Girls Track team continue to train for their next Track Meet scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at Ron Poe Stadium in McKinney for the annual McKinney Boyd Broncos Relays.

Lovejoy Wrestling
The Leopard Wrestling Team competed last week in a quad dual match against McKinney Boyd, Prosper and Plano East. This was a very challenging dual meet for all our Leopard Wrestlers. This dual meet prepared our Leopards for this week's District 9-5A meet to be held tomorrow (Thursday, February 8th) at Carrollton R.L. Turner High School. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM and will last the entire day

The referral window for gifted and talented services is open for students in grades 1-12 through March 31st.

The Frisco College Baseball Classic is returning to the Dr. Pepper Stadium, March 2nd - 4th. Texas A&M, Baylor, Louisiana Tech, and Cal Berkeley will be playing in a round robin tournament.
The Frisco College Baseball Classic is partnering with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for this event and is looking for volunteers to help throughout the weekend. Students in grades 8 - 12 may

Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts
An exciting new event will be held at the elementary campuses this spring: Late Night Leopards - Campus Campouts. This event will accomplish two things: Campus Campouts will provide a memorable experience for the parents and students at the elementary level, and will also generate funds through business sponsors and a camp fee. The funds raised from this event will help to replace state funding lost from the last legislative session. The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. Orchestra Valentine's Fundraiser
Now through February 13th
The Lovejoy Orchestra Booster Club will be selling flowers and candy for Valentine's Day during lunch now through February 13th from 11:25 AM - 12:55 PM at Lovejoy High School. Deliveries will be made on February 14th during 2nd and 3rd period classes. Send a Valentine to your friends. Send a Valentine to your teachers. Order a Valentine to take home to your mom. Lovejoy High School Band Mattress Sale Fundraiser
February 10th
The Lovejoy High School Band will be hosting its 1st annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser this Satruday, February 10th from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School Band Hall.
Do you need to replace a bed in your home? Know someone who does? There will be over 30 bed styles on display for customers to try. The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores. In addition to beds, there will also be pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, and adjustable power bases. Financing options will also be available.

The All State Band, Choir and Orchestra students will be departing for San Antonio on Wednesday, February 14th at 7:00 AM. Please join our fine arts families and "send off" these talented students.

Lovejoy Men's Soccer Future Leopard Night
February 20th
The Lovejoy Men's soccer team will host Future Leopard Night on Tuesday, February 20th, when they take on Royse City with a 5:30 PM kick off for JV and a 7:30 PM kick off for Varsity. During halftime of the JV game, the first 15 future Leopards who score a goal will receive prizes. Additionally, there will be prizes for all future Leopards. Participants will take the field with Varsity players for the National Anthem. After the JV halftime events, players will be available to answer questions and sign posters which will be provided at the game, as well as soccer balls which future Leopards bring to the game. This event is for all elementary, intermediate and middle school students.

WSMS Theatre - One Act Play Performances

The Willow Springs Middle School Theatre department presents I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti. Details are as follows:

Location: WSMS Cafetorium
This Holocaust play centers around Raja, one of the children who survived Terezin, and the other children trapped in the Ghetto. A memory play, Raja recalls the events that led her to be the confident woman she is now. This play was based off true stories of these children's lives, based on actual drawings and poems that were buried in hopes of someone finding them after the war.
This 40 minute drama is the WSMS theatre department's UIL competition piece for One Act Play, which will take place on March 3rd in Grand Prairie.
Each night at our home show, there will be a guest critic to provide feedback for the cast. The audience is welcome to stay, but may leave after the performance if they choose.

Come sing and dance the night away with the Lovejoy High School Jazz Band and Choir at 7:00 PM in the Lovejoy High School commons area on Friday, February 23rd. This concert will feature vocal and band standards from the 1940s and beyond. Admission is free. Coffee and desert items may be purchased separately. This event is open to all.

24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

Lovejoy Gifted Association Rocket Launch

Back by popular demand, the Lovejoy Gifted Association is partnering with the Dallas Area Rocket Society (DARS) for the annual LGA Rocket Project. The Rocket Project is an extracurricular STEM activity at which your child builds a rocket one evening, then launches it another day, all with the assistance of the professionals from DARS.
The Lovejoy Gifted Association is a non-profit organization supporting Gifted and Talented programs across all schools in Lovejoy ISD. The Rocket Project is a fundraiser with proceeds directly benefiting Lovejoy students. If you have questions, contact

Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10.
