Shed Hunting Brings Antlers and Information
Look for shed antlers along travel corridors in bedding areas in feeding areas along fences and at water crossings. |
After the long, brutal cold snap we just experienced, I had to find a reason to be outside. So I headed to a farm I deer hunt to take down treestands and look for shed antlers. In case there is someone new to big game biology reading this column, each year cervids, including deer, "shed" their antlers and grow a new set. Bovids, like bighorn sheep, have horns that are never shed and continue to grow throughout the life of an animal. Deer typically shot their antlers from late December through February.
Looking for sheds can be like finding a needle in a haystack, but there are ways to increase your odds of finding antlers. Some key areas to focus on are travel corridors, bedding areas, feeding areas, along fences and at water crossings. Bedding areas and feeding areas are key locations, because this is where deer spend the majority of their time. Fences are key because when bucks jump a fence, the jar from hitting the ground can knock antlers off. Antlers...

David Risberg Memorial Grant Proposals Are Due February 16th
David Risberg enjoyed conservation practices. Now his memory will live on through projects all across Missouri.
The Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM) is proud to announce the inaugural application period for the David Risberg Memorial Affiliate Grant Program.
"Thanks to the generosity of John and Mary Risberg, and the many donors who followed their lead, CFM now has the ability to offer grants to support the efforts of our nearly 100 affiliated organizations. I am humbled and proud that the Risbergs have placed their trust in CFM to honor David's memory," said Brandon Butler, CFM Executive Director.
CFM is awarding $10,000 in 2018. This total will be divided into multiple awards up to $2,500. This competitive grants program is only available to CFM affiliate organizations and must be used for advancing conservation priorities through projects and campaigns that grow the conservation movement, and strengthen the affiliate network.
"Mary and I are so excited to see this memorial grant program get underway. It is a fitting way to honor our son's memory, given his lifelong pursuit of conservation efforts. Our intent is to enable grant recipients to expand their own pursuit of such efforts with the funding this program will provide," said John Risberg.
Grant applications are available on the CFM website. The deadline for proposals is February 16, 2018. Scanned email applications sent to [email protected] are preferred. If mailed, they must be postmarked by February 16. Mail to 728 W. Main Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
Recipients of grants will be notified on or about March 1, 2018. The grants will be awarded at the Affiliate Luncheon during the 82nd annual CFM Convention on March 10, 2018.

Convention Keynote Speaker, Hal Herring on Latest Podcast
Hal Herring marvels at the beauty of Alley Spring. |
Hal grew up in rural north Alabama in a family of voracious readers. As a youngster, fishing, hunting, digging ginseng, and running trotlines filled his days. It was a life mostly spent outside, but his heroes were always writers, from Guy De Maupassant to Peter Matthiessen, Dostoyevsky to Jim Harrison. These greats inspired Herring to write.
Today, Herring's a contributing editor at Field and Stream magazine, where he has covered everything from bear poaching gangs to caviar crime rings, wetlands destruction to energy politics. Hal also writes the Field and Stream Conservationist blog found on their website. His byline has appeared in such prestigious publications as A
tlantic Monthly, the Economist, Bugle, Nature, High Country News and more.
"I've been able to explore the issues and the ideas and conflicts that fascinate me, from hundreds of articles on conservation and the environment, to writing about guns, shooting, hunting, martial arts, and crime," Herring said.
This past January, Herring swung through Missouri on his way back to Montana from Alabama. He spent two days with CFM Executive Director, Brandon Butler. Herring had never been exposed to the Ozarks before, and was absolutely blown away.
Be sure to register for Convention today, so you don't miss this unique opportunity to meet and listen to one of the foremost conservation writers in the United States.
