A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:

As many of you know, we have been studying our current system of ranking all Lovejoy High School graduates. In response to parental feedback, we have been revisiting our practice to determine if ranking is or is not in the best interest of our students.

We have gathered information from other school districts as well as colleges and universities. We are nearing the end of our review and I want to provide ample time for our community to respond to our recommendation in regard to a change in the ranking policy. We have not found any compelling evidence supporting the continuation of our current practice of ranking all students.

We originally anticipated taking a recommendation to the Board of Trustees at the January 2018 Board meeting. However, I am delaying a final recommendation to our Board and anticipate the proposal being presented during the March 21, 2018 meeting. This will allow our parent community the opportunity to review the plan and ask questions. It will also give us the opportunity to complete an on-line survey.

We are continuing to research the following:
  • When a change is made, a decision must be made regarding the first graduating class to which this will be applicable.
  • If we include an opt-in policy where students can choose to receive a rank outside of the Top 10%, what will be the position of admission professionals regarding our students? In the discussion we held with admission professionals, we were told that opt-in was not an option; a school must either rank or not.
It is important for us to make a fully informed decision. I appreciate your patience during this process.  As always, please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

With Respect,

Ted Moore
