CULTURAL CORNER
Our amazing foreign language program definitely sets WCA apart from other schools! WCA is proud to offer French, Mandarin and Spanish immersion classes for each of our students. February is an exciting month for our foreign language department as they prepare the students and transform the school for both the Mardi Gras and the Chinese New Year celebrations! Parents are invited to come and experience these events along with our students and staff.
Mardi Gras
We will be celebrating Mardi Gras on Tuesday,
February 13
, with a carnival. Students still n
eed to follow the informal (everyday) dress code, but are encouraged to wear green, gold or purple s
olid colored polos. Necklaces are allowed, but no masks, please.
Carnival Schedule: 8:50 - 9:50am (PK - 2nd),
10:00 - 10:50am (3rd & 4th), 1:15 - 2:15pm (5th - 7th)
At the school assembly on
February 9 at 1:45pm, our French students (Kindergarten, 3rd grade and up) will be performing. The 2nd graders will also sing us some songs. All of the 1st - 4th graders have been creating miniature floats in art class as part of a Mardi Gras craft. The most original floats will be recognized during this assembly. Parents are welcome to attend!
French Night with the Colorado Avalanche. T
he Montreal Canadien hockey team is coming to Denver on
Wednesday, February 14
. Make it a family date for Valentine's Day!
This is a great opportunity for our French students, as well as the whole school. We will have the chance to meet with French native speaker, Jean Martineau. He works with the Avalanche Hockey team, and he will speak to our students in French (and English as well!) VIEW FLYER for details on purchasing tickets. Questions? Please email Madame Maurice.

The 2018 Chinese New Year is just around the corner on February 16. This year is the "Year of The Dog". WCA is going to hold a big celebration on
February 23
! There will be a stage performance show, along with diverse performances by each grade. The school will be transformed with festive decorations, and student artwork will be displayed. No celebration is complete without delicious food. Dumplings are available to order through
My Kids Lunch
. They are listed as an add-on item on the lunch menu for February 23. The cost is $1.00 for 3 dumplings, and the last day to order online is February 14.
Please note the dumplings contain wheat, egg and soy
. Students are also bringing home a hardcopy order form if you don't want to order online.
Dress code: Students are encouraged to wear red polos or dresses, traditional Chinese/festive clothing, or t-shirts with popular Chinese cultural symbols (dragons, pandas or calligraphy.) With the exception of girls wearing dresses, bottoms should still be navy or khaki in accordance with our
dress code.
This celebration will be a great time for our students to build an interest in the Mandarin language and learn more about the Chinese culture.
Fun Facts about the festival:
-
The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, starts on the first day of the first month each year in the Chinese lunar year calendar.
-
It is the largest holiday in China, lasting 15 days from lunar January 1st to 15th.
-
It is a time for families to reunite together, which is very similar to what we do in the United States during the Christmas holiday.
-
The festival includes great food, in particular Jiao Zi, the dumplings.
-
There are parties, celebration shows, and people visit each other to exchange greetings and warm wishes.
-
Fireworks have been a major part of the Spring Festival in the Shang Dynasty since it originated (17th - 11th century BC). It is believed the fireworks and red color would expel ghosts who were afraid of the big sound and red color. Today, many big cities in China don't allow the fireworks in order to avoid pollution and the noise of the fireworks explosions. Interesting, isn't it?
Happy New Year of the DOG!
Spanish Presentation Spotlight
As we mentioned in the last school newsletter,
Señor Welsher's 4th, 5th and 6th grade students and Se
ñora Reyes's 3rd, 5th and 7th grade students
worked on a month long project about a famous Hispanic person and presented their projects in Spanish. The students did an outstanding job, and we wanted to give you the chance to see one of our 3rd grade Spanish students in action. (See below.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My name is Augustine Torres, and I am excited to share about my third year in Spanish class with my great teacher, Señora Reyes, and about me too! First, I learned about jobs, foods, and played amazing Spanish games! If you are a parent, I encourage you to enroll your child at World Compass Academy and show them how great our Spanish teachers are! I am in third grade, so I am excited to tell you about the great project I did in Spanish class! The project was on a famous Hispanic person, and I chose Juan Ponce de Leon. He was a famous explorer that discovered Florida, and was the mayor of Puerto Rico! I thought (and still do) think that he should be famous because he was brave, nice, and he had a city named after him! I thought the project was a complete success! This is Augustine Torres, signing off.

GEOGRAPHY BEE
On Friday, January 19, 30 students in grades 4th-7th competed in the Second Annual WCA Geography Bee. Seven rounds of difficult questioning led to the determination of our top seven competitors. The competition was so stiff that the final competition and the championship round were completed on Tuesday, January 23. Our second runner-up was Satori M and our first runner-up was Abby N. Our World Compass Academy Geography Bee winner was Veronika D. She will now be completing an online test, which will determine if she qualifies for the state level geography bee. Congratulations and great job to all of our participants!

Power of One Assembly
We want to thank the PTO for sponsoring the Power of One Assemblies. It was such an amazing opportunity for all of the kids to have a conversation about bullying in all forms. Thank you for your support!
The performers did an excellent job of engaging our students in a conversation about bullying. Elementary students enjoyed a presentation about how to handle physical, exclusionary, and social bullying situations. Middle schoolers watched a presentation about the same situations with the addition of cyber bullying. Students were invited to sign a pledge to stand up to bullying and use the Power of One to make a difference!
Thank you for all of your support,
Your Admin Team

HELP KEEP YOUR CHILD HEALTHY AND FLU FREE
With flu season upon us, it is important to keep our children healthy. Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu, and on average, one in three children in the U.S. is affected by the virus each year. Usually, the flu is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Occasionally, people get the flu from touching a germ-infested surface.
It is important to know the difference between cold and flu. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills, sore throat, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Often cold symptoms come on gradually and they include stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and hacking cough.
Simple Steps for Keeping Your Child Healthy:
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent your child from getting the flu is to take him/her to get a flu vaccine.
- Talk to your child about practicing good health habits, such as washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
- Covering mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing-preferably into the inside of the elbow or with a tissue and disposing of the tissue immediately into the trash.
- Avoiding sharing drinks, water bottles, eating utensils and cell phones.
- Avoiding touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
- You can help prevent the flu from spreading at home by disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, toys, and other commonly shared items.
- You can prevent spreading illness to others by keeping your sick children home from school until they have been without fever for 24 hours. It is important for your sick child to get rest and drink plenty of fluids.
- Some children may benefit from an antiviral medication, which can be prescribed by a doctor to help lessen the number of days that a child is sick with the virus. To be effective, antiviral medication should be taken within 12-48 hours after the flu symptoms begin.
