Learning for Excellence and Inspiration
Message from
Head of School Lisa Lalama

Read the Montessori Message blog for more from Lisa.
Tomorrow we will host another Journey at WMS. The Journey is an opportunity for parents to travel throughout the school, visit every classroom and participate in Montessori lessons from the Toddler through 9-12 programs. We host three Journeys each school year, encouraging parents and new staff to join us so they can get a glimpse of Montessori education at each level. It's an inspiring learning experience.

This is also the time of year when many of our staff members participate in a variety of professional development opportunities. Over the next two months, many of our teachers and staff will be attending workshops and conferences focused on classroom management, STEAM, technology integration, educational technology spaces and curriculum, math, environmental education, brain science, Montessori education and much more. Learning isn't stagnant; it is by definition an active process. To remain relevant in today's world, it is more important than ever to continue to learn and engage in professional development. The field of education demands this more than many.

Just as parents are inspired by the WMS Journey, our staff is inspired by learning more about topics that influence their teaching and time with children. At its best, learning motivates us to learn even more, pushing the boundaries of our thinking, raising questions and encouraging us to refine our educational practice. WMS supports the growth of its teachers, encouraging them to not only participate in professional development, but to work together to help each other evolve as educators and inspire their students to learn even more. As we strive for excellence, learning is essential for all of us.

Flu Season Reminders from School Nurse Lisa Chou

I am back from maternity leave, and it seems I'm just in time for a rough flu season! I hope that all of you, like me, have gotten your flu shots to help protect our families. Remember that the flu shot does not only aid in protecting your own body from the flu, it also helps establish the WMS herd immunity necessary to keep younger siblings, grandparents and other medically fragile friends safe. (What is herd immunity and why does it matter? Read more from PBS's NOVA .) It is NOT too late to get your shot! See Nurse Lisa for a passionate list of reasons and resources.

So far, WMS students have caught colds and the flu at a much lower rate than the general population, and I think it is because they are awesome at washing their hands. The act of hand-washing is the single most important factor in preventing transmissions of colds/flu. The second-most important preventive action you can take is coughing and sneezing into the side of your sleeve rather than into your hands. It's tough to teach younger students this habit, but it can make a big difference in the number of sick days your family needs to take.

However, sometimes we get sick anyway. The chart below offers an easy way to sort through symptoms that may belong mostly to a cold, mostly to flu or are common to both. Per WMS policy, if your child has a fever (100.4 degrees), he or she must remain home until he or she is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication. If you suspect your child has the flu, please keep him or her home from school, call your child's pediatrician and do your part to reduce this season's infection. With any luck, we'll get through it and have more robust immune systems for it!

Jet-Setting and Jumping Jacks with Claire Goodill (WMS '03)

It's fair to say alum Claire Goodill has covered some ground in the 15 years since she attended WMS. She's lived in five cities in the last nine years, including a recent move to Los Angeles. Her work for ClassPass - a fitness class subscription service - literally keeps her on the move. Even in her free time, Claire lists "taking tons of workout classes" among her favorite pastimes.

Claire as a sixth-grader in 2003
Before discovering her flair for fitness, Claire - who graduated from WMS in 2003 - was a student at Tulane University in New Orleans (her first stop after leaving Wilmington), where she studied communications and fell in love with jazz funk music. At Tulane, Claire was involved with the Communication Majors Society - first as treasurer and later as president. She was also a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and served as a campus marketing representative for Universal Pictures. After graduating in 2013, Claire headed north to New York City (city #2) to dabble in public relations (PR) and celebrity management. She landed a job working for model and TV personality Heidi Klum through Full Picture, a PR and brand management agency.

After just one year in "the industry," Claire quickly found her passion for fitness and technology, and left the celebrity management circuit to join the ClassPass start-up team.

"I reached out to ClassPass when there were only a few employees working there and asked if they'd bring me in for an interview," she said. "One thing led to the next and they created a role for me on their customer experience team."

ClassPass soon moved Claire from New York to San Francisco (city #3), and later to London (city #4). She worked her way up to assistant manager before taking on the general manager position for a new ClassPass project in Los Angeles.

After graduating from WMS, Claire attended Wilmington Friends School for middle and high school. During her school years, she enjoyed competitive gymnastics as well as acting and dancing in school theater productions. One of her fondest WMS memories is of playing the role of Oliver and singing her first solos, "Where is the Love?" And she also remembers rallying her classmates to help her paint rocks and shells to sell to school parents to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

When she's not busy at work or attending fitness classes, you can find Claire rediscovering the piano (which she hasn't played since her time at WMS!) and zipping up to Oregon to visit her new nephew - the son of her sister, Libbie, who graduated from WMS in 2000.

After calling five different cities home since she left Wilmington, does she have a clear favorite?

"I've been in L.A. three months. It's hard to pick a favorite," she said. "Probably New Orleans!"
