Saint Sarkis Name Day Celebration
|
|
Sunday, February 4, 2018 St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church celebrated her name day. The morning began with divine liturgy officiated by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan. Also in attendance was His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General.
After Church services, the parishioners all gathered in Chadrjian Hall where the Ladies Guild had prepared a lovely luncheon. The Master of Ceremonies of this event was Mr. Veh Bezdikian.
Our very own Ms. Debbie Agopian led the artistic program. She sang two beautiful opera pieces which wowed the crowd and left them requesting for more.
Ever the professional, Debbie returned to sing her final song, an Armenian sharagan, to the delight of everyone there.
On this special occasion, Archbishop Oshagan, honored several members of our Church community in recognition of their hard work and commitment to the growth and prosperity of St. Sarkis Church.
The honorees were: Mr. Armen Ardzivian, Mr. Ara Artinian, Mr. Edward Barsamian, Mrs. Ossana Ferejian, Mrs. Hermine Ghadimian, Dr. Hagop Gorgissian, Mr. Manoug Gostanian and Mr. Gourgen Grigorian.
Each of the honorees was presented with a Certificate of Merit. The afternoon was concluded with Archbishop Oshagan's Benediction and the singing over Guiligia.

Ghevontiantz Clergy Gathering
|
The clergy serving the Eastern Prelacy attended the annual Ghevontiantz clergy gathering that this year was being hosted by Holy Trinity Church in Worcester, Massachusetts.
The main topic of the gathering focused on the encyclical issued by His Holiness Aram I on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Republic of 1918.
Fr. Nareg Terterian lectured on "From The War Within to Independence", a biblical and psychological reflection on St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans, chapter 7.

On Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 Salt & Light Youth Group met for their 2nd Session. The topic of discussion was Follow Me "Come and See".
We started the afternoon by enjoying a meal together and then broke out into six small groups. There were 39 kids in total who attended this session.
Some comments from a few of the Salt & Light Youth Group Members:
My experience during Salt and Light was fun and enjoyable. I really liked talking to my new and old friends about all different topics including religion.

As a member of the Salt & Light Youth Group, this past Saturday's program was a good experience for me because it allowed me to get a better feel of my friends' personalities that I wouldn't have known otherwise had it not been for the program. It allowed me to connect with them in a different way since we all have the one common thing of being Armenian. We were able to have an open discussion and I feel that it helped me think of things I haven't fully thought of in the past and made me analyze them in a different way. I was able to see things from other people's perspective and freely discuss our opinions about topics not only about God, but also things that happen in our daily lives.

My experience at Salt & Light youth group was fun, especially when I was put in a group with all my close friends. The activities we do are very fun and interactive. I like how everyone shares their experiences and gives their opinion on certain topics. I also enjoy my mentor Mr. Michael Gostanian, because he has a good sense of humor, but when we have to get things done he will make sure that we are not fooling around and stay focused on the discussions. Salt & Light is a great experience because it brings together the Armenian community, where you can learn, make new friends and have fun. I definitely recommend everyone to attend the youth group meetings.

Saturday School Annual Gala

Dear Fellow Armenians,
As an Armenian community, we take pride in educating our children on our rich and unique Armenian culture.
This is such a crucial time in the world to remember how important it is to pass down to our children our language and our traditions.
The Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian Armenian Saturday School has been a pillar in the Armenian community, helping to educate our Armenian youth on our vast Armenian religion, history and language. We have shown time and time again over the last 103 years since the start of the Armenian Genocide that we are strongest when we come together, support each other and keep our Armenian heritage. Being Armenian is a feeling deep in your soul and is not just speaking the language or singing the songs but is also a sense of pride and duty to educate the world on our race, our religion, our rich history and our story.
We cannot forget the victims of the genocide or take for granted those who survived against all odds so that one day it would be possible for us to have Armenian churches and schools being build all over the world.
We are working on our goal in keeping our heritage alive by educating our children.
Our children are our future, and in order to build on our very active and proud Armenian youth, it is important to support the institutions which help them grow as Armenians.
We are thrilled that we are moving forward with the expansion of the school. The new space is desperately needed by our 93 students. The Saturday School's PTA works on many different events throughout the year to help the school cover its expenses but this year our results are crucial.

On Saturday, February 3rd, 2018 St. Sarkis Sunday School teachers and their spouses were invited to a "Sunday School Appreciation Dinner" at La Parma on the Bay, in Port Washington.
It was nice to have the opportunity to get together (outside of the classrooms) and enjoy an evening with great people, delicious food and lots of laughter.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO ROMANS (13:11-14.23)
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God.
We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. For it is written,
"As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God."
So then, each of us will be accountable to God.
Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. If your brother or sister is being injured by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of one for whom Christ died. So do not let your good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for you to make others fall by what you eat; it is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that makes your brother or sister stumble. The faith that you have, have as your own conviction before God. Blessed are those who have no reason to condemn themselves because of what they approve. But those who have doubts are condemned if they eat, because they do not act from faith; for whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.
Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith- to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.
ՊՕՂՈՍ ԱՌԱՔԵԱԼԻ ՆԱՄԱԿԸ ՀՌՈՄԱՅԵՑԻՆԵՐՈՒՆ (13.11- -14.23)
Սիրոյ այս սկզբունքով ընթացէք, գիտնալով թէ ի՛նչ ժամանակի մէջ կ՚ապրինք: Ժամանակն է որ քունէն արթննանք, որովհետեւ հիմա փրկութիւնը աւելի մօտ է մեզի քան այն ատեն՝ երբ հաւատացինք: Գիշերը ահա կ՚անցնի եւ ցերեկը մօտ է: Ուստի խաւարի գործերէն հեռանանք եւ լոյսի զէնքերը առնենք՝ ապրելու համար այնպէս ինչպէս վայել է լոյսի մէջ քալողներուն, փոխանակ անառակութեամբ, արբեցութեամբ, խառնակեցութեամբ ու պղծութեամբ, կամ նախանձով ու հակառակութեամբ ապրելու: Տէր Յիսուս Քրիստոսի նմանեցէք, եւ մարմնի ցանկութիւնները կատարելու հետամուտ մի՛ ըլլաք:
Հաւատքի մէջ տկարացած մէկը ընդունեցէք առանց իր խիղճը տանջող կասկածները քննադատելու: Օրինակ, մէկը կը հաւատայ թէ կուռքերու զոհուած միսէն կարելի է ուտել: Ուրիշ մը, որ կասկած ունի այդ մասին, բանջարեղէն կ՚ուտէ միայն: Միս ուտողը թող չարհամարհէ՛ չուտողը, իսկ չուտողը թող չքննադատէ ուտողը, որովհետեւ Աստուած զայն ընդուներ է: Ո՞վ ես դուն որ Աստուծոյ ծառան կը դատես: Տէրը ի՛նք միայն գիտէ՝ իր հաւատքին մէջ կանգո՞ւն է անիկա, թէ ինկած: Բայց վստահ եղէք որ կանգուն պիտի մնայ, որովհետեւ Տէրը կրնայ զայն կանգուն պահել:
Նոյնպէս, ոմանք կը խորհին թէ զԱստուած պաշտելու համար այսինչ օրը աւելի յարմար է քան միւս օրը, մինչ ուրիշներու համար բոլոր օրերը նոյնն են: Իւրաքանչիւրը թող իր համոզումը պահէ: Կը բաւէ որ թէ՛ յատուկ օր մը փնտռողը եւ թէ՛ օրերու միջեւ խտրութիւն չդնողը երկուքն ալ Տէրը պատուել կը խորհին: նոյնպէս ալ, թէ՛ կուռքերու զոհուած միս ուտողը Տէրը կը պատուէ եւ թէ՛ չուտողը, երբ երկուքն ալ Աստուծոյ գոհութիւն կը յայտնեն:
Մեզմէ ոեւէ մէկը ինքն իր անձին համար չ՚ապրիր, ո՛չ ալ ինքն իրեն համար կը մեռնի: Երբ կ՚ապրինք՝ Տիրոջ համար կ՚ապրինք, եւ եթէ կը մեռնինք՝ Տիրոջ համար կը մեռնինք. որ կը նշանակէ թէ ըլլա՛յ կեանքի եւ ըլլա՛յ մահուան մէջ՝ Տիրոջ կը պատկանինք: Ատոր համար ալ Քրիստոս մեռաւ եւ վերակենդանացաւ, որպէսզի մեր Տէրը ըլլայ թէ՚՛կեանքի եւ թէ՛ մահուան մէջ հաւասարապէս: Ինչո՞ւ կը դատես ուրեմն եղբայրդ, կամ ինչո՞ւ զայն կ՚արհամարհես: Բոլորս ալ Քրիստոսի ատեանին դիմաց պիտի կանգնինք, որովհետեւ մարգարէութեան մէջ գրուած է.
«Ես ինձմով կ՚երդնում,- կ՚ըսէ Տէրը,-
որ ամէն ծունկ պիտի խոնարհի առջեւս
եւ ամէն լեզու պիտի խոստովանի
թէ ե՛ս եմ Աստուածը»:
Քանի ուրեմն մեզմէ իւրաքանչիւրը իր անձին համար հաշիւ պիտի տայ Աստուծոյ, այսուհետեւ դադրինք զիրար քննադատելէ, եւ փոխարէնը ջանանք մեր եղբայրներուն գայթակղութեան եւ մեղանչումին պատճառ չդառնալ:
Յիսուս Քրիստոսով հետեւեալը ապահովապէս գիտեմ, թէ ինքնին պիղծ բան չկայ: Բան մը պիղծ կ՚ըլլայ ա՛յն մարդուն համար, որ զայն պիղծ կը համարէ: Եթէ գիտես թէ քու ուտելովդ եղբօրդ խղճմտանքը կը վիրաւորես, սիրով շարժած չե՛ս ըլլար երբ ուտես: Քու կերակուրովդ պատճառ մի՝ դառնար որ կորսուի եղբայրդ, որուն համար Քրիստոս մեռաւ: Առիթ մի՛ տար որ բարի եւ ուղիղ սեպած բանդ հայհոյութեան պատճառ դառնայ: Որովհետեւ Աստուծոյ արքայութիւնը կերակուր կամ ըմպելիք չէ, այլ արդարութիւն, խաղաղութիւն եւ խնդութիւն, Սուրբ Հոգիէն տրուած: Եւ ով որ ասոնցմով կը ծառայէ Քրիստոսի, անիկա Աստուծոյ հաճելի կ՚ըլլայ եւ մարդոց գովելի:
Արդ, այսուհետեւ խաղաղութիւն փնտռենք եւ աշխատինք իրարու հաւատքը ամրապնդել: Չըլլա՜յ որ կերակուրի պատճառով Աստուծոյ գործը քանդես: Ամէն բան մաքուր է ինքնին. բայց սխալ է բան մը ուտել, երբ ատիկա ուրիշ մը կը գայթակղեցնէ: Աւելի ճիշդ է՝ ո՚չ միս ուտել, ո՚չ գինի խմել, ո՚չ ալ ուրիշ ոեւէ բան ընել՝ որով եղբայրդ կը գլորի կամ կը գայթակղի կամ կը տկարանայ: Այս մասին քու համոզումդ քու եւ Աստուծոյ միջեւ թող մնայ: Երանի՜ անոր որ ինքզինքը դատապարտութեան չ՚ենթարկեր այնպիսի բաներով՝ որով իր ընկերոջ փորձութեան պատճառ կ՝ըլլայ: Միւս կողմէ, եթէ մէկը կասկած ունի իր կերածին անմաքրութեան մասին, Աստուծոյ դատապարտութեան ենթակայ է եթէ ուտէ, որովհետեւ իր արարքը հաւատքի արդիւնք չէ: Եւ ինչ որ հաւատքէն չի գար՝ մեղք է:
Փա՜ք տանք Աստուծոյ, որ կրնայ ձեզ ձեր հաւատքին մէջ հաստատուն պահել այն աւետարանով որ բերի ձեզի Յիսուս Քրիստոսը քարոզելով։ Այդ աւետարանը Աստուծոյ փրկութեան ծրագրին յայտնութիւնն է, որ անցեալ բոլոր ժամանակներուն մէջ ծածուկ մնացած էր։ Այժմ այդ խորհուրդը, մարգարէական գրութիւններով յայտնուած, մշտնջենաւոր Աստուծոյ հրամանով բոլոր հեթանոսներուն ծանուցուեցաւ, որպէսզի ամէն ոք հաւատայ եւ հնազանդի Քրիստոսի։ Ուստի Յիսուս Քրիստոսի միջոցաւ յաւիտեան փա՜ռք Աստուծոյ, որ ի՛նք միայն իմաստուն է։ Ամէն։
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (6:1-21)
Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
"So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
"When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
"Pray then in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial,
but rescue us from the evil one.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
"And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ (6.1-21)
Զգո՛յշ, Աստուծոյ հանդէպ ձեր պարտաւորութիւնները մարդոց ներկայութեան մի՛ կատարէք ցոյցի համար, որովհետեւ այդ պարագային վարձատրութիւն պիտի չստանաք ձեր երկնաւոր Հօրմէն:
Երբ ողորմութիւն կ՚ուզես տալ՝ փող ու թմբուկով մի՜ ըներ, մարդոց ուշադրութիւնը գրաւելու համար, ինչպէս կեղծաւորները կ՚ընեն ժողովարաններու մէջ եւ հրապարակներու վրայ՝ մարդոցմէ գովասանք ընդունելու ակնկալութեամբ: Վստահ եղէք, միայն այդ է անոնց վարձատրութիւնը: Ընդհակառակը, դուն երբ ողորմութիւն պիտի տաս, ձախ ձեռքդ թող չգիտնայ թէ ի՜նչ կ՚ընէ աջ ձեռքդ: Այսպիսով ողորմութիւնդ գաղտնի ըրած կ՚ըլլաս, եւ քու երկնաւոր Հայրդ որ անտեսանելի է, բայց կը տեսնէ կատարածդ, քեզ պիտի վարձատրէ յայտնապէս:
Նմանապէս, երբ կ՚աղօթես՝ կեղծաւորներուն մի՛ նմանիր, որոնք կը սիրեն ժողովարաններու մէջ եւ հրապարակներու անկիւնը աղօթել, որպէսզի մարդիկ իրենց աղօթելը տեսնեն: Վստահ եղէք, միայն այդ է անոնց վարձատրութիւնը: Այլ երբ պիտի աղօթես, մտի՛ր սենեակդ, գոցէ՛ դուռը եւ աղօթէ քու երկնաւոր Հօրդ, որ անտեսանելի է. եւ Հայրդ որ կը տեսնէ կատարածդ, քեզի պիտի հատուցէ յայտնապէս: Տակաւին, երբ կ՚աղօթես, մի՛ շատախօսեր հեթանոսներուն նման, որոնք կը կարծեն որ եթէ երկար աղօթեն՝ Աստուած պիտի լսէ զիրենք: Արդ, մի՛ նմանիք անոնց, որովետեւ ձեր Հայրը գիտէ ինչ որ պէտք է ձեզի, նոյնիսկ երբ տակաւին իրմէ խնդրած չէք:
Ուրեմն այսպէ՜ս աղօթեցէք.-
«Հայր մեր երկնաւոր,
սրբաբանուի՜ անունդ.
թող գայ արքայութիւնդ,
թող կատարուի քու կամքդ,
ինչպէս որ երկինքի մէջ՝
այնպէս ալ երկրի վրայ:

Ձեր հարստութիւնը մի՛ դիզէք երկրի վրայ, ուր ցեցն ու ժանգը կը կրծեն ու կը փտեցնեն եւ կամ գողերը տանդ պատը քանդելով ներս կը մտնեն ու կը գողնան զայն: Այլ ձեր հարստութիւնը երկինքի մէջ դիզեցէք, ուր ցեցն ու ժանգը չեն կրնար կրծել եւ փտեցնել զայն եւ ոչ ալ գողերը կրնան տանդ պատը քանդելով ներս մտնել եւ գողնալ: Որովհետեւ ձեր հարստութիւնը ուր որ է, հոն կ՝ըլլայ նաեւ ձեր սիրտը:

COUNCIL OF CONSTANTINOPLE
This Saturday (February 10) the Armenian Church remembers the 150 Fathers of the Council of Constantinople, the second ecumenical council convened by Emperor Theodosius in 381. This council confirmed the work of the first council at Nicaea, and added five articles to the Nicene Creed regarding the Holy Spirit, the Church, Baptism, and Resurrection. The Council of Constantinople is one of the three ecumenical councils accepted by the Armenian Church.
POON PAREGENTAN
This Sunday (February 11) is Poon Paregentan, the eve of Great Lent (Medz Bahk). Poon means "real" or "genuine," and distinguishes this paregentan from others in the liturgical calendar prior to other periods of fasting. Paregentan literally means "good living."
Poon Paregentan ushers the faithful into the Lenten period of fasting, penance, and reconciliation. During Lent the Church takes on a solemn appearance. The altar curtain is closed starting from the evening of Poon Paregentan, symbolic of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Holy Communion is not offered during Lent and the faithful are encouraged to use this period leading to Easter as a time of prayer and meditation to strengthen their faith.
Paregentan Sunday is the last day before the start of Lent. It is marked with good and abundant food, merriment, entertainment, and festivities of various kinds. Traditionally, all the food in the house that is forbidden during Lent would be consumed on Paregentan or given to non-Christian neighbors. During Lent all animal products, including dairy and eggs, are forbidden. The earliest Armenian tradition was even stricter and was referred to as Aghouhatz (salt and bread) because of its stringent restrictions.
FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD (DYARNUNTARACH)
On Wednesday, February 14, the Armenian Church commemorates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord to the Temple (Dyarnuntarch in Armenian, which means "bringing forward of the Lord"). This feast always falls on February 14-forty days after the Nativity (January 6). It commemorates the presentation of the Lord to the Temple by Mary and Joseph according to Mosaic Law (See Numbers 18:15). In the temple, a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it had been revealed that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord, took Jesus in his arms, blessed God and said, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." (See Luke 2:22-40)
Some pre-Christian Armenian customs have been incorporated into this feast, including one that remains popular to this day, especially in the Middle East and Armenia. In recent years the tradition has been revived here in the United States as well. On the eve of the feast, a bonfire is lit outside of the church using a flame from the altar. Young people, especially newlyweds, gather around the fire as the flames subside, the young men leap over the flames. The light of the bonfire is symbolic of Christ who is the Everlasting Life and Light of the world.

Homenetmen of NY Super Bowl Party: written by Patrick Yaghdjian
On Sunday February 4 the New York chapter held its annual super bowl party at the armenian center in woodside.
It was an emotional night as the New York Chapter bid farewell to what has been their headquarters for around 40 years, the woodside Armenian Center.
The center was the heart of the armenian community in queens since the late 1970s as many memorable events were held there. It was the meeting point for many generations of Soccer, basketball,
volley ball teams as well as the heart of the Scout movement in New York.
The building is under contract for sale said Ohanes Mashavejian, president of the NY chapter, the proceeds are to be used to find a new home for us and the Community, which is extremely important for the future of our youth in the queens and Long Island area.
