Call for AdCom Nominations
|
The IEEE EMBS solicits names for candidates for positions on its Administrative Committee (AdCom) for terms of three years. The AdCom is the administrative and governance body of the IEEE EMB Society. It is required to meet two times each year.
Recent changes in the EMBS Bylaws have redefined the categories of AdCom Members: 5 members now represent geographic areas of interest / priority, 5 representatives whose strength lies in key technical areas of EMBS, and 5 members who are active practitioners in the field of biomedical engineering (e.g. clinicians, health policy, medical industry). In addition, 1 student and 1 young professional shall also be sought.
At this time we seek nominations for a total of nine positions that will serve for the terms listed below, beginning 1 January 2019.
Administrative Committee
- Geographic: one representative of North America (3 year term)
- Geographic: one representative of Europe (3 year term)
- Technical: two representatives (3 year terms)
- Practitioner: one representative (3 year term)
- Student: one representative (2 year term)

The 2018 IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit and Honors Ceremony will be taking place on Friday, 11 May 2018, at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco, CA.
The Summit will feature a Fireside Chat, "The New Gene Therapy: CRISPR-Cas9 and the Future of Medicine" with John Tisdale, NIH, and Bruce Conklin, UCSF, moderated by Glenn Zorpette, Executive Editor, IEEE Spectrum.
Invented in 2012, CRISPR-Cas9 is a gene-editing technique that allows researchers to alter an organism's genome-for example, to add or alter a biological trait or to correct a genetic defect. The technique is much more efficient, inexpensive, and easier to use than previous gene-manipulation tools. In addition, the gene modifications accomplished by CRISPR are "germline," which means they are inheritable.
In this panel session, IEEE Spectrum's Glenn Zorpette discusses the immense promise-and disconcerting potential for misuse-of CRISPR-Cas9 with two biomedical researchers on the forefront of efforts to apply the technology to the eradication of disease. John Tisdale, of the National Institutes of Health, and Bruce Conklin, of the University of California San Francisco, will share their experiences and insights and describe how this remarkable new technology could transform medicine and potentially even lengthen the human lifespan.
The 2018 IEEE VIC Summit will culminate in the evening with the IEEE Honors Ceremony. The Awards presented at the Honors Ceremony are an expression of recognition for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical, electronics, communications, environmental and safety technologies, computer science and engineering, engineering education, as well as, the allied branches of engineering and the related arts and sciences and technologies and their application. This year, Thomas F. Budinger, Univ. Berkeley, will receive the IEEE Medal for Innovations in Healthcare Technology.

ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Bin He Joins Carnegie Mellon University as
New Biomedical Engineering Department Head
|
As of February 1, 2018, Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering welcomed new Department Head of Biomedical Engineering Bin He to campus as he began his appointment. Dr. He succeeds Yu-li Wang, the R. Mehrabian Professor of Biomedical Engineering, who had served as Department Head since 2008.
"The intellectual community and setting at Carnegie Mellon fit very well with my philosophical understanding of biomedical engineering," says Dr. He. "Biomedical engineering can be pushed from biomedical sciences or from engineering, and CMU is the ideal place to advance biomedical engineering through engineering innovation at one of the finest engineering schools in the world."
One area of Dr. He's research is to improve noninvasive dynamic brain imaging technologies so that they are faster and more spatially precise. The conventional electroencephalography (EEG), while used in every clinic in the world, is essentially a one-dimensional technique that does not provide information about the distributed nature of brain activity. Dr. He's research is to use the very small electromagnetic signals generated by neurons to produce dynamic three-dimensional images of the brain function and dysfunction.
This research earned Dr. He the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award, the highest honor IEEE can bestow to a member or nonmember in the field of biomedical engineering. Dr. He has also received several other prestigious awards, including the Academic Career Achievement Award from the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, as recognition for his research contributions and commitments to interdisciplinary education. Dr. He was formerly President of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and Chair of Publications Committee of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and is Chair-Elect of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. He has served on numerous editorial boards and conference committees, and is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

13th IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging
|
Founded in 1994, the IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging has become over the year the worldwide reference in the field and is proud of his 500 alumni.
It is resolutely international (around 45 participants from more than twenty countries have participated to the previous editions) and accessible to young scientists. It is an open yet privileged place for exchanges and discussions of major on-going work. Informal and warm, at a location where the sea and the land merge in a time varying relation, this school brings together, every other year the world's greatest researchers and teachers in biomedical imaging. The participants are PhDs, post-doctoral students, engineers from industry, and already involved in some area of biomedical imaging.

"Inspection of Medical Devices - For regulatory purposes"

Dr. Almir Badnjević, a member of the Cardiopulmonary Systems technical committee, recently published "Inspection of Medical Devices - For regulatory purposes". This book offers all countries a guide to implementing verification systems for medical devices to ensure they satisfy their regulations. It describes the processes, procedures and need for integrating medical devices into the legal metrology framework, addresses their independent safety and performance verification, and highlights the associated savings for national healthcare systems, all with the ultimate goal of increasing the efficacy and reliability of patient diagnoses and treatment. The book primarily focuses on diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices, and reflects the latest international directives and regulations. Above all, the book demonstrates that integrating medical devices into the legal metrology system and establishing a fully operational national laboratory for the inspection of medical devices could significantly improve the reliability of medical devices in diagnosis and patient care, while also reducing costs for the healthcare system in the respective country.

NEW AND EMERGING TREATMENTS FOR OPIOID ADDICTION HOPE TO OFFER SOLUTIONS TO THIS CRISIS
|
Opioid addiction claims nearly 100 lives every day in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was a record 33,091 opioid overdose deaths in 2015, up 16 percent from the record set the previous year. In response to the crisis, researchers and policy makers are looking for effective treatments for opioid addiction. Some solutions, like medication-assisted treatment, have been in use for years but continue to be refined for better results. Others, like vaccines against addiction, are still in the research stage, but hold great promise for helping people with opioid addiction. Researchers are also investigating ways to directly stimulate the brain to help ease withdrawal symptoms and help people addicted to opioids detox.

Differences Between Gait on Stairs and Flat Surfaces in Relation to
Fall Risk and Future Falls

The authors used body-worn inertial sensors to quantify differences in semi-free-living gait between stairs and on normal flat ground in older adults, and investigated the utility of assessing gait on these terrains for predicting the occurrence of multiple falls. Eighty-two community-dwelling older adults wore two inertial sensors, on the lower back and the right ankle, during several bouts of walking on flat surfaces and up and down stairs, in between rests and activities of daily living. Derived from the vertical acceleration at the lower back, step rate was calculated from the signal's fundamental frequency. Step rate variability was the width of this fundamental frequency peak from the signal's power spectral density. Movement vigor was calculated at both body locations from the signal variance.
Partial Spearman correlations between gait parameters and physiological fall risk factors (components from the Physiological Profile Assessment) were calculated while controlling for age and gender. Overall, anteroposterior vigor at the lower back in stair descent was lower in subjects with longer reaction times. Older adults walked more slowly on stairs, but they were not significantly slower on flat surfaces. Using logistic regression, faster step rate in stair descent was associated with multiple prospective falls over 12 months. No significant associations were shown from gait parameters derived during walking upstairs or on flat surfaces. These results suggest that stair descent gait may provide more insight into fall risk than regular walking and stair ascent, and that further sensor-based investigation into unsupervised gait on different terrains would be valuable..
