PACS Students Donate Handmade Blankets
to Local Law Enforcement
|

When visiting the Prince Avenue Christian School lower school hallways in recent weeks, teachers, students, and parents might have noticed the third-grade classes busy working on what may have seemed like a simple craft project. In reality, the knotted felt blankets the students have been making will serve a much greater purpose. The handmade blankets will be donated to local law enforcement officials to provide comfort to children in emergency situations.

About Missions in Nicaragua

Former Prince Avenue Christian School front office receptionist Beverly Shivar spent some time this week visiting PACS 3rd graders. David and Beverly Shivar retired from PACS in 2016 in order to serve as missionaries in Nicaragua. While in the states for a visit, Mrs. Shivar took the time to visit and share with students about her work in Nicaragua.

Fourth through fifth-grade students who scored in the 95th percentile or higher on an accepted subtest of the Terra Nova Achievement Test last spring were recently recognized for qualifying to participate in the highly selective Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Participation in the 4th-6th Grade Talent Search offers students opportunities such as online activities, a book club, newsletters for students and parents, educational programming, and discounts on independent learning materials.

Three PACS students were recently honored at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Apalachee Chapter Awards Luncheon.
Eighth-grade student Elizabeth Ann Jackson was selected as the winner of the DAR American History Essay Contest. Junior Abby Frost was selected as the winner of the DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. Senior Emma Taylor was nominated by PACS teachers to receive the DAR Good Citizen Award in response to her outstanding character and commitment to citizenship both within Prince Avenue as well as in the community.

Prince parent Alicia Ross recently spoke to Prince Avenue Christian School high school students as part of the school's Lunch and Learn program. Mrs. Ross spoke to students about her career in nursing. She explained that to be a successful nurse, it is necessary to have compassion, effective communication skills, confidence, and attention to detail. Mrs. Ross detailed her career as a nurse which includes working in the ER, the NICU, and as a cath lab nurse. Mrs. Ross currently serves as a nurse in heart surgery. Students enjoyed her informative talk and had the opportunity to ask questions.

6th Annual PACS Empty Bowls Auction

The Prince Avenue National Art Honor Society's 6th Annual Empty Bowls silent auction was held Friday, January 26th. PACS high school NAHS members, along with faculty members, created 42 beautiful handmade pottery bowls and filled the bowls with goods. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to A Bigger Vision, a local Athens-area homeless shelter. PACS NAHS has donated $10,000 to A Bigger Vision over the past five years, and because of the generosity of the PACS community, this year’s auction raised approximately $2400 to add to that total.

Prince Avenue Christian School middle and high school band students recently auditioned for District Honor Band. Sam Carmean, Will Frost, Jake Hathaway, Abby Weaver, and Caleb Wilson all made middle school District Honor Band. Jake Hathaway and Caleb Wilson both accomplished 1st chair in their respective sections scoring the highest score on their instrument. The middle school District Honor Band will rehearse and perform in Toccoa, Georgia February 9 – 10.
Nate Aldin, Caleb Land, Abbigail Merhar, and Emily Weaver all made high school District Honor Band. Four high school students in District Honor Band is a new record for PACS. The high school District Honor Band will rehearse and perform in Gainesville, Georgia
February 15 – 17.

Over the Christmas break, Prince Avenue Christian School opened its doors for one very special event. PACS senior football players Harrison Jump and Daniel Parrish signed to play football at the college level.

McDonald and Colquitt Have Excellent Showing at State Swim Meet

Prince Avenue Christian School seniors John Morgan McDonald and Matthew Colquitt had a great weekend at the Georgia High School Association State Swim Meet Finals held at Georgia Tech.
John Morgan McDonald was the champion in the A-AAA 500 Free with a time of 4:42.71 while setting a new PACS school record time. John Morgan also finished eighth in the A-AAA 100 Butterfly with a time of 52:49 while setting yet another PACS school record.
Matthew Colquitt finished eleventh in the A-AAA 100 Free with a time of 49.54 and finished fourteenth in the A-AAA 50 Free with a time of 22.37 while falling just short of his PACS school record.
