Friends of the Institute View Cardiology Collection at the National Museum of American History
Museum director John Gray hosted the GW Heart & Vascular Institute's cardiologists and invited guests for a special tour of the National Museum of American History's Mending Broken Hearts, a display of 21 different artificial heart valves, documenting the development and evolution of one area of cardiac surgical innovation. Curators also provided a behind-the-scenes demonstration of selected artifacts from the Museums extensive medical collection. The Institute was grateful for this rare opportunity.
Dr. Steven Farmer appointed Senior Advisor and Medical Officer to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
GW cardiologist Steven A. Farmer, MD, PhD, has been selected to work for a two-year assignment on healthcare policy for CMS. Dr. Farmer is Associate Professor of Medicine & Public Health and Associate Director for GWs Office of Clinical Practice Innovation. He specializes in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging, including nuclear cardiology and echocardiography. Dr. Farmer earned a BA from Stanford University and was a British Marshall Scholar, receiving a PhD in Health Services Research & Policy from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. After receiving his MD degree from Yale University, he completed his internship, residency in internal medicine, and fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Farmers research addresses contemporary national health policy issues, particularly in relation to variability in medical decision making, healthcare organizational structure, payment reform, and the costs and outcomes of care. His innovative work incorporates broad multidisciplinary expertise from the fields of cardiology, epidemiology, economics, law, and health policy. He currently leads a study on the impact of medical malpractice litigation and financial incentives on testing for coronary artery disease, a project funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Dr. Talal Alzahrani joins GW Cardiology Fellowship
Dr. Talal Alzahrani joined the GW cardiology fellowship program on January 1, 2017. Dr. Alzahrani is a graduate of the King Abdulaziz University College of Medicine in Saudi Arabia where he received the Top 10 Medical Student Award. He came to GW as a research fellow working under the direction Dr. Dominic Raj, Director of Division Renal Diseases and Hypertension, and Dr. Marco Mercader (Cardiology). Dr. Alzahrani has been co-author on seven publications in medical journals and was an outstanding medical resident in our GW training program from 2014-2016. He also completed a Masters of Public Health in the GW School of Public Health in 2016.
Katz Participates in mHealth Conference at the National Institutes of Health
On March 15, Dr. Richard Katz, presented mHealth, Community Health Workers or both for the Management of Medicaid for Patients with Diabetes, highlighting results from his three year research study supported by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Group.
Bostrom Hosts Webinar on Community Health Workers and Heart Care
GW Heart Failure nurse practitioner Linda Bostrom, led a joint webinar with the Institute for Public Health Innovation and the Massachusetts Community Health Workers organization on how to integrate community health workers into a heart failure management team.
