 MABTR 2017 Finances
& 2018 Goals
MABTR is excited to start a new year. 2017 brought us new rewards, challenges, milestones, and new friends and fans.
In 2017 we saved 240 lives. Thank you to everyone involved as this would not have been possible without you!!
We are proud to state that we rescued 70 puppy mill survivors in 2017. That is 29% of our 2017 intake. This is a decrease over last year by 10%. We hope that some of the new laws around breeders and pet store sales is the leading factor to this decline. MABTR prides itself on the ability to give commercial breeder (puppy mill) dogs a second chance at life. Click here to learn more about puppy mills.
Our largest intake however in 2017 were owner surrenders. 114 dogs are from owners, 48% of our intake, that came directly to us or MABTR solicited them as they were selling their dog online (i.e. craigslist, Facebook). We expected to see an increase in this category overtime as awareness of rescue efforts became more known and MABTR's name is shared. We encourage families that if you are in the position of needing to rehome your dog, please consider rescue. Remember people will tell you what you want to hear in order to get your dog even if they are not the right home.
Our last category for intakes are those from a shelters. MABTR took in 56 dogs from local shelters, 23% of our intake. We continue to build relationships with local shelters as we know not all dogs will thrive in such an environment and space is always an issue. We take in those that are deemed unadoptable due to health or behavior and when the shelter is in need of space.
MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue is run by volunteers with caring hearts. We are funded completely by donations, and we can't achieve our mission alone.
Not one person in the MABTR family is paid for their work even Jennifer, the founder.
Generous donations from kind people like you sustain us with the financial support necessary to care for the hundreds of homeless Bostons we take in every year. Donations and volunteer help are both crucial to our existence.

...All these acts of kindness and more allow us to make a difference in the lives of these precious Bostons.
Since November 2005 to December 31, 2017 we have rescued 3,348 dogs.
Below is our 2017 Financial Report.
*We currently have 10 dogs in foster care of which four arrived in the last week of December. $2,150 of uncollected adoption fees are from those still in foster care. For fees not collected MABTR has changed their policy where fees will be collected prior to the dog moving.*

2018 Goals for MABTR
With every successful organization there are goals to be achieved in order for our mission to be accomplished together. MABTR's family and efforts will continue to grow and accomplish the following goals in 2018.
- Grow our foster homes. MABTR cannot operate without foster homes. The more foster homes we have, the more Boston Terriers we can save. We are actively seeking foster families in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. Click here to learn about fostering.
- Increase our presence in Iowa through local events including playdates.
- Build our volunteer base. Volunteers are needed in the areas of helping at local events and transporting.
- Complete a training video for foster parents
- Redesign our educational brochures
- Implement new fundraising opportunities (i.e. Buy It Now)
- Redesign the Boston Bay shopping page
- Fill the following open positions:
- North Colorado Event Coordinator - to schedule, plan and execute three MABTR associated events in the northern part of Colorado in such cities as Boulder and Fort Collins. This individual will need to plan to attend all scheduled events.
- St Louis, MO Event Assistant - to assist the event coordinator in planning and executing local events. This will include you to attend 50%, if not more, of the scheduled events.
- Cheyenne, WY Event Assistant - to assist the event coordinator in planning and executing local events. This will include you to attend 50%, if not more, of the scheduled events.
- FB Project Admin - Post fun facts on the page including but not limited to: highlights such as messages from fan's postings, lost dogs, holiday wishes, FAQs, educational articles, graphics/poems, reminders (i.e. not leaving dogs in the car). This individual will be trained to use Hootsuite to future schedule posts so daily interaction is NOT required however you are required to have access to the internet.
- Web designer who can redesign our Boston Bay shopping page to make it friendly to use and view. Current website run through Word Press using PayPal as payment option

Meaty came to MABTR at the age of 13 and during pre-op tests for an overdue dental he was diagnosed with metastatic cancer (stage four/advanced cancer spread throughout the body). He is living comfortably in Iowa.
MABTR has made it our mission to take in and care for as many Bostons as possible, especially those who are terminally ill and need a loving place to spend their final moments.
Our hospice program was created in 2011 with the goal to provide exactly that - a home with a good quality of life for dogs whose time is limited. We believe that terminally ill Bostons who appear to be pain-free and desiring to live should be given the opportunity to do so in a loving environment for however long they have left.

How much and how often do you feed your dog?
I ask myself the question; could I go a whole day with just one meal or two meals?
The answer is NO, so personally I do not expect my dog to.
One thing to note about Bostons is they have a high metabolism rate and as you experience now they are an active breed so they are burning calories. You may need to adjust the amount of food you are feeding from what is stated on the back of the food bag based on your dog's activit
y level. Manufacturers are giving a general estimate. This does not take in all factors.
Spread out your dog's daily food amount over a few meals. Like with us, it can be more satisfying to a dog to have smaller, more frequent meals. Your dog is less likely to scarf down their food too fast if they are not approaching their meal on an empty stomach. If your schedule permits, three small meals a day instead of two regular size meals will be more satisfying to your dog as they will feel content throughout the day.
Keep in mind that vegetables and fruits are also good for your dog and can be used between meals to keep them content. This is better than a dog treat/biscuit. Fruits consist of pears, bananas, strawberries, apples without the peel. Vegetables to consider are green beans, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, yams, pumpkin, and zucchini.
There is also a list of fruits and vegetables your dog needs to stay away from as they are harmful to their health. Foods like onions, avocado, grapes, pits of peaches and plums.

It is also important to not exercise for at least an hour (longer if possible) before and especially after eating, especially large breed dogs, due to stomach bloat and twisting of the gut.

We had two Bostons in our family already when an internet search led me to
Jake
.
When I got our other two boys from a local breeder, I didn't yet know about rescue. After a few years and the help of Google, I discovered MABTR. From time to time, I'd go to the website and look at the available dogs. I wasn't sure about adding a 3rd dog to our family, especially considering the rambunctious nature of my one dog. But as I kept visiting MABTR's website, I was drawn toward this sweet frosty face.
Jake was 10 years old and a BIG boy - 39 pounds! He ended up in rescue because his owner died. My heart just broke for him. He'd had his family since he was a puppy, and now they were gone and he no longer had a family of his own.
After a lot of soul searching, I inquired about Jake and put in an application. The foster mom was absolutely wonderful - she was patient with all of my questions. I had never adopted an adult dog before, nor had I ever had a rescue dog. I was nervous. Would he get along with my other two dogs? Would he have behavior problems? Could I make this work? How long would we have with him, since he was already 10 years old?
We pulled the trigger and I never looked back. It took a little time to acclimate the three boys to each other, but once they knew they were a pack, it was wonderful. Jake may have been a 10-year-old chunky boy, but he was so playful! The younger ones didn't keep him down. And he was just SO sweet. He would lay on my feet in the winter and always followed me around the house. My sweet old man, my furry shadow.
Jake crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June 2014 at the age of 13. We had 3 wonderful years with him that I wouldn't trade for anything. A lot of friends and family had questioned when we first got Jake... aren't you worried about getting a dog so old? Once they grew to know him, they knew his age didn't matter. He was just such a sweet, loving, easy-going dog - his age was irrelevant.
I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to have Jake in my life. He taught me not only about rescue, but also the joy of adopting a senior dog.

Adoptable Dog of the Month
Hi, my name is
Lefty. I am 13 years old and weigh 23 pounds. I need a new home because my owners had two toddlers that I did not adjust to. I am being fostered in Fairway, KS.
I am a very energetic boy for 13 and I love to run in the backyard, get chased, and run down a tennis ball. I always hope there is a squirrel for me to run after. I spend the day sleeping so I am ready when you get home for a good walk.
I am learning new tricks: I can sit, stay, shake, lay down, come, and roll over.
Every night I will burrow under the covers so I can sleep right up against your leg.
I love children who are at least around 6, as they understand what it takes to be around an older dog. They can take the time to pet me and treat me well, and I know how to be a very good dog with them. After all, they are small like me!
Let's go on a car ride and get me a cushion so I can see out better. We can go to Lowe's or the park, and I will love it. I like seeing new things and investigating around the yard.

Q: How can I get my dog to take his medication which he needs to get better?
A. Not every dog owner is blessed with a dog who looks at everything as a tasty treat. Try not to force pills down your dog's throat as it will just make the task harder.
Below are a few tips to getting pills/liquid into your dog
- Wrap the pill up in cheese slices or push them into the end of wieners/hot dogs
- You can also smash the pill between two spoons to form a powder which can be mixed with gravy or wet food
- Use pill poppers which are formed pouches
- Coat the pill in a thin layer of butter
- Capsules can be broken open and placed in wet food or moist treats, to better hide the taste.
- Liquids can be dripped into gravy, drizzled over sausages, added into apple sauce, or even mixed in the water bowl if they are the tasteless type. You can use an eye dropper inserted behind the last tooth in your dog's closed mouth

As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car. We do not fly our dogs.
Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.
Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed. Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:

AGE is
just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
