Folsom High wins annual county Academic Decathlon
Folsom High School is the winner of the 2018 Sacramento County Academic Decathlon competition! The team now advances to the State Finals, which will be held March 23-24 in Sacramento. California's winning team advances to the   U.S. Academic Decathlon April 19-21 in Frisco, Texas.

Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon announced individual and team winners of the 38th Annual Sacramento County Academic Decathlon (held February 3 at Inderkum High School) at an awards ceremony last night. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) honored top scorers at the Citrus Heights Community Center where Kevin Riggs, Randall Communications Senior Vice President, was the emcee.

SAFE Credit Union provided $10,000 in scholarships, which were distributed among top-scoring students. SAFE CEO David Roughton and Chairman Terrance Tremelling were on hand to personally congratulate all participants.

Hundreds of students participate in district's History Day 
FCUSD's History Day Competition was held on Jan. 30 at Folsom Middle School.
 
There were 110 projects and over 200 students in grades 5-11 that participated. Participants came from Theodore Judah Elementary, Mather Heights Elementary, Folsom Middle, Mitchell Middle, Mills Middle, Vista del Lago High and Folsom High. 
 
The primary purpose of our district's History Day is to prepare students to compete at the county level in March. At the county level, students are competing for slots to advance to the state and national contests. 
 
Students entered projects in a number of categories. 5th graders completed 2-D Posters. Middle and high school students choose a category: 3-D Exhibits, Documentaries, Websites, Historical Papers, and Performances.
 
There were 36 judges, teachers, and community members that participated in the event.

IN THE MEDIA: Anti-Bullying extreme sports tour visits Cordova High 
The ASA (Action Sports Athletes) Tour visited Cordova High on Jan. 25 to educate our students about bullying and to inspire them to prevent it. 
 
ASA performed BMX and skateboarding stunts, along with discussing the negative impact bullying can have as part of their, " No Place for Hate" campaign. They've been educating youth about the impacts of bullying and bringing top athletes to schools since 2000.

Fans turn out to cheer on championship Bulldogs Football Team at parade and rally
A parade and rally was held on Tuesday, Jan. 30 for the Bulldogs Varsity Football Team who won the CIF Division 1 State Championship title  on Dec. 15, against Helix 49-42 at Hornet Stadium at Sac State. 
 
Crowds of fans from the community came out to Folsom's Historic District to cheer on the team. The rally was hosted by Adam Frick of Folsom TV.

This is the third state championship title under coach Kris Richardson that the Bulldogs have won since 2010.  The team this year was 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the league. 
 
The Bulldogs Football Team was also featured on the cover and in an article in the February 2018 edition of Sports Stars Magazine
Officer and Cordova grad named RCPD Employee of the Year
The Rancho Cordova Police Department recently recognized Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Officer Andrey Nedeoglo  and Cordova High graduate as the 2017 Employee of the Year. 
 
Nedeoglo grew up in the Ukraine, and his family moved to the United States, selecting the City of Rancho Cordova as their home, when he was 16 years old. He graduated form Cordova High, where he first learned English.

U.S. Navy Band tour coming to Cordova High Feb. 22
America's U.S. Navy Band is coming to Rancho Cordova, one of 21 cities in 12 states to host a performance in their 2018 tour.
 
The United States Navy Concert Band performance is scheduled for Feb. 22, 2018, 7 p.m. at Cordova High in the large gym. Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova.
 
The Navy Concert Band, the premier wind ensemble of the U.S. Navy, presents a wide array of marches, patriotic selections, orchestral transcriptions and modern wind ensemble repertoire. As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for 90 years.

2 018 Ninth Circuit Civics Contest open to high school students 
 
An essay and video contest for high school students in the western United States and Pacific Islands is accepting entries.

The contest is sponsored by the U.S. Federal Courts for the Ninth Circuit. 

This year's essay and video theme is, "The 14th Amendment, 150 Years after Ratification. What does Equal Protection Mean to Students?"

A total of $7,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The top three finishers in both the essay and video with receive $2,000 for 1st place, $1,000 for 2nd pace and $500 for 3rd place. First place winners along with their parent or guardian will be invited to the 2018 Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference in Anaheim, CA. The deadline to enter is 4/1.

Safe Credit Union Scholarships available!

SAFE Credit Union is accepting scholarship applications for the 2018 scholarship program from now until March 12, 2018. 
 
Ten  $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to exceptional college-bound seniors from high schools located within SAFE's field of membership. 
 
Qualifications:
  • must have 3.0 GPA or better. 
  • be college-bound, graduating senior living within one of the following counties: Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Alameda, Amador, Butte, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Nevada, San Joaquin or Solano. 
Those students applying should mail 
a completed application to SAFE Scholarship Committee 2295 Iron Point Rd. Suite 100, Folsom, CA 95630.  
 
The application must be postmarked March 12.

The FCUSD Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, February 15 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
