Senator of the Week Courtney Yamagiwa

Senator Yamagiwa has been a Senator for the College Health and Human Services for just under a year, but has been in student leadership for some time, all while being a double major in consumer affairs and German.

This semester, Yamagiwa and her fellow senators have been working on "The Beach Against the Increase" resolution. Its aim is to combat the potential CSU-wide tuition increase. Yamagiwa and her fellow co-authors have spent many hours on the resolution articulating the voice and concerns of LBSU students against the potential increase.

"This resolution is important because it shows that the students of [Long Beach State] are all in this together, and the students at-large are representing them in the fight against the tuition increase," Yamigawa said. "We want to do everything in our power to stop it from happening, and we're calling on our administrators to take a stance with us."

IN THE SENATE

Wednesdays - 3:30 p.m. (USU-234)

Last Wednesday, the board approved the second of three readings for "The Beach Against the Increase" resolution, which included the following changes:

The vote by the California State University Board of Trustees has been postponed to May 2018
A request that President Conoley join the students' stance against the increase in the name of "One Beach" was added to the resolution
Statistics on the number of students facing housing and food insecurity were also added to the resolution

President Nino will be meeting with LBSU President Conoley and Vice President Dr. Carmen Taylor to discuss the tuition increase, among other matters. The board also confirmed two officers and elected three student trustees at-large last Wednesday, and Dr. Jeane Caveness, recently retired director of student affairs at LBSU, and Dean Cyrus Parker-Jeannette came to speak to the Senate.

LOBBY CORPS

Thursdays - 12:30 p.m. (USU-234)

The Lobby Corps (LC) continued the discussion on their efforts to combat the potential tuition increase. LC reported the following from the CSU Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting that took place Jan. 29 through Jan. 31 at the Office of the Chancellor in Long Beach:

Of the $263 million the CSU system requested from Governor Brown, only $92 million was awarded, leaving a $171 million gap
The BOT discussed sources of income to fill this gap, including an increase in tuition

LC began p hone banking for the Dream Act of 2017 on Tuesday. Phone banking will be held in the USU Room 204 every Tuesday in February, with the ex ception of Feb. 27, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. LC also plans to lobby state legislature for more funding for mental health resources.

PRESIDENT'S CABINET

Mondays - 10 a.m. (USU - 234)

The annual Night Safety Walk is back and will be held on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m. Students and student leaders will assess areas of campus that are unsafe at night or in need of improvement.

Commissioner for Women and Gender Equity Affairs Stevie Merino confirmed that lactation products are now available in the University Library. And as promised, Self Care for the Queer Soul will be taking place on Feb. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

President Nino announced that his cabinet is still in need of a commissioner for veterans affairs. This position will stay open until filled. Apply on BeachSync or visit asicsulb.org/gov for job descriptions and other open positions.
