Demystifying Social Media
The Demystifying Social Media workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 10 focuses on better online advocacy and effective social media. It examines how to create effective copy, how to use graphic design tools, and how to better design a social media campaign. This seminar is great for small to moderate-sized nonprofits where it's all hands on deck, as well as larger organizations where understanding between departments is key for better communication. Learn how to be a better online advocate for the causes that mean something to you! Curated by Thom Dancy of Malashock Dance Company and Julie Guy of the Music Therapy Center.
Diving Deeper into National Core Arts Standards
It's an historic time for arts education in California as the state revises its VAPA standards and uses the National Core Arts Standards as a foundation. Diving Deeper into National Core Arts Standards is a three-day learning experience on March 1, March 21, and May 2 that is crucial for VAPA teachers, school administrators, and other stakeholders to become familiar with the structure and content of these new standards. Participants can choose to examine the standards globally, by developing a course description in their discipline based on the national standards, or they can choose to explore the instructional impact of the national standards through the development of a series of mini-units. Participants will implement the mini-units in their classrooms and return with evidence of student learning to reflect on the impact of instruction.
San Diego Arts Network Field Trip
The next San Diego Arts Network Field Trip on March 6 highlights new arts programs at three schools in the Chula Vista Elementary and Sweetwater Union districts. You are invited to hear how principals were able to work with their communities and teachers to create visual and performing arts programs on their campuses for the first time in many years.
Kickstart the Arts in (Y)Our Schools
Come together on May 4 with school administrators who coordinate visual and performing arts programs, teacher leaders, parents, and community arts organizations providing arts education programs to expand the arts for our students. The 2018 Kickstart the Arts in (Y)Our Schools event includes structured networking with colleagues and discussions on creating the best possible arts learning environments in San Diego County schools. The theme this year is advocacy.

Help the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) Statewide Arts Initiative showcase student artwork at this year's 2018 California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) state conference from March 28 to 31 in Sacramento. Read the flier for more information and download the form to submit artwork by Feb. 28.
Student Voices Campaign
The
Student Voices Campaign
is an annual statewide creative video competition for students in grades 7 through 12 to make their voices heard! This year, the campaign asks students to show why the arts matter by submitting a video and message. The deadline to enter is March 30.

Teaching Artist Brings Zulu Heritage,
South African Culture to Students
Center for World Music Teaching Artist Nomsa Burkhardt is an extraordinary teacher, dancer, singer and percussionist of Zulu heritage, born in Soweto, South Africa. She spent most of her formative years in KwaZulu, Natal, a region famous for its rich Zulu heritage and culture. There, she studied various traditional dance styles with master dancers, such as Indlamu, ukuQhobosha and ukuSina. After moving to Philadelphia, Burkhardt co-founded HIMOSHA, an African dance troupe. Her artistic skills and passion for dance propelled her into becoming the director and lead choreographer for the troupe for seven years. In 2000, she returned to South Africa to study with the accomplished ethnomusicologist Professor Meki Nzewi at the University of Pretoria. After returning to the United States in 2004, Burkhardt helped develop a teacher-training program on South African history, and conducted a series of educational performances as part of the Peace Train Project at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. Burkhardt has toured cities throughout the United States, South Africa, Israel, Italy, and Germany. She is the co-founder of IZINDE, an Afro-fusion band made up of artists from around the world, and frequently performs with the ensemble Zimbeat. She has taught artist residencies and presented assemblies for the
Center for World Music
in San Diego for eight years.

California Arts Educators Exhibition
The California Art Education Association - San Diego Chapter is once again partnering with the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) to honor our local art teachers by exhibiting submitted work in the main foyer of 300 Building at the SDCOE main campus at 6401 Linda Vista Road in San Diego. The work will be on exhibition through April 3. Everyone is invited to the closing reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 3 to speak to the artists and ask them questions about their art submissions. 4th Annual AME Leadership Institute
This year's AME (Arts, Media, and Entertainment) Leadership Institute will be held in San Diego on April 15 to 17. The theme is Bringing Industry Authenticity into the AME Classroom. More information and registration is available on the

Creativity at the Core Summer Institute
This year's
Creativity at the Core three-day summer institute
will be held at the SDCOE main campus July 25 to 27. The event focuses on arts learning and California standards and attendees will hear from educational leaders, teaching artists, arts specialists, and inspirational speakers from across the state. Presentations include hands-on learning opportunities focused on a suite of CCSESA's new professional learning modules developed by County Offices of Education and Arts Partner Organization Leaders. The institute is sponsored by CCSESA Arts Initiative in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education, CREATE CA, and the California Department of Education.
