In The Year of the Dog
Lunar New Year Festival
January 28th
Open Day Last Sunday
(The Last Sunday in December is on Holiday)
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
$7.50 Online / $10 at the Gate

In anticipation of the Lunar New Year, we have planned the last Sunday in January for the whole family with music, crafts, art, and treats from Japan,
China, and Korea .

The Japanese New Year (正月 Shōgatsu) is an annual festival with its own customs. Since 1873, the official Japanese New Year has been celebrated according to the Gregorian calendar on January 1st, New Year's Day (元日 Ganjitsu). However, the celebration of the traditional Japanese New Year--the  Lunar New Year--still takes place and, in January, we plan to celebrate them all!

10am - 4pm Chinese Lantern-Making: Learn how to make different kinds of traditional Chinese paper lanterns with members of the garden's Asian Arts Council.

10am - 4pm Japanese Origami-Making: Fold cranes, dogs and other forms to celebrate the New Year with members of the garden's Asian Arts Council.

12pm - 3pm Korean Minhwa Folk Painting Workshops: Enjoy a rare chance to learn to create traditional paintings and tapestries with trained instructors. (Sponsored by the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, www.kccla.org)

2pm - 2:45pm Japanese Koto Musical Performance: Enjoy uplifting melodies performed by Kozue Matsumoto and the Calarts Japanese Music Ensemble.

We will also have our Family Fun Guide and Treasure Hunt to make exploring the garden even more fun for families. Pick one up and start exploring!

(Stay as long as you like, we just need to know when you will arrive)

For their support and participation, we thank:

Remember: The City of Pasadena prohibits our visitors from parking on the surrounding residential streets. Please follow the signs to park on-site. On Open Day Last Sunday, parking is also available in the lot we share with the Westridge School on Madeline Drive. It is accessible from Pasadena Avenue. Look for the driveway on the right at the end of the street.

A new solo exhibition for Japanese artist, Shizuko Greenblatt, will open with a Members' Reception on January 13 at the En Gallery, and will be open to the public from January 18 through April 13.

Shizuko Greenblatt was born into a samurai family and was trained in various artistic traditions including painting, calligraphy, sculpture and flower arrangement, in both Japan and the United States. Now based in Los Angeles, she has focused her artistic talents for the past 25 years on dynamic expressionistic paintings that incorporate both calligraphy and Japanese ikebana (flower arranging).

This new solo exhibition,  featuring 20 works spanning the last decade of Greenblatt's calligraphic and floral fusion series, will unite bold and gentle works. In her calligraphic paintings, lively red brushstrokes wash over black strokes - echoed by pitch-black painted branches - in an abstract expressionistic subversion of traditional Japanese calligraphy. These contrast with more subdued works spotlighting single characters for "flower," "grass," "water" and "light," in gentle tones, painted as though lit by moonlight.

Drawing from the energy of nature and Japanese cultural references, Greenblatt creates powerful mixed-media paintings, sculptures and installations that have been shown internationally. "I aim to activate and uplift the human soul," she explains, "by the transformed sculptural elements and traditional Japanese symbolism."

The exhibition was curated by Meher McArthur, Japanese art historian and Creative Director of the garden. It may be viewed during the garden's open hours or by appointment. The works in this exhibition, and future exhibitions, will be for sale, and part of the proceeds will benefit the garden's educational and cultural programming.
