Upcoming Services with Incense
|
Many people are surprised the first time
they smell the unusual fragrance of incense in church. It is a scent you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else except in sacred worship.
In our
liturgy, we use incense primarily to focus our attention, by symbolically purifying our intentions and our worship space. Many people enjoy the fragrance, but we are aware that some of our members may be sensitive to it.
Please note the following upcoming services that will include the use of incense:

Boar's Head & Yule Log Festival
is This Weekend!
|
This weekend, December 30 & 31, is the 78th Annual Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival! Tickets are still available for the dress rehearsal at 2 pm on Saturday, and all are welcome to show up prior to any of the performances and we will make every effort to find a place for people to be. So come in from out of the cold, and enjoy 75 minutes of music and story telling and pageantry! More information about the show can be found here.

Offerings in Response to Confederate Symbols
|
January 7 and 14 @ 11:45 am
This past September, following a challenge put forth by Dean Gail Greenwell, the vestry of the Christ Church Cathedral took under consideration how best to acknowledge memorials to
Confederate figures currently installed
within its facility. Under the leadership of senior warden Don Lane and junior warden Julie Kline, the vestry determined that the most appropriate response needed to begin with an active period of discernment. Consequently, the vestry has scheduled a special educational forum on Sunday,
January 7
, at 11:45 am.
During this forum, Dr. Frank Rzeczkowski, visiting professor of history at Cincinnati's
Xavier University, and the Rev. Dr.
William J. Danaher Jr., professor of theology, ethics and arts at Ecumenical Theological Seminary, will give both the historical context and theological implications.
The vestry will follow this educational forum, which is open to the public, with a Cathedral Conversation on Sunday,
January 14
, also scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. We

The Cathedral Center for Spirituality

Since 1817, Christ Church Cathedral
has provided needed ministries to its neighbors. With the establishment of the Cathedral Center for Spirituality, the cathedral, as it has since its founding, continues to meet the needs of those who live and work nearby.
We realize during this busy holiday time it is easy to feel overwhelmed.The Center is a year round offering and is available to everyone. Offering spiritual direction, education programs, and retreats to help those interested in better understanding and responding to the presence of God in their lives, the Cathedral Center for Spirituality is designed to serve as a fundamental resource to guide individuals on their spiritual journeys. It is a place where mindfulness, centeredness, and holistic living is promoted and taught. The Cathedral Center for Spirituality also offers

Organ Recital @ 5:30 pm
Join us for a service of Scripture, prayer,
music, and pageantry that reflects on the
three Epiphany mysteries: the revelation of the Christ child to the Magi, the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, and the turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana. Music sung by the choir will include: Tribus miraculis (Luca Marenzio), A Babe Is Born (William Mathias), Bethlehem Down (Peter Warlock), The Baptism of Christ (Peter Hallock), Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day (Richard Shephard), Cana's Guest (Richard Allain), Surge illuminare (William Byrd), and Seek Him That Maketh the Seven Stars (Jonathan Dove). is preceded by an organ recital at 5:30 pm.

With the advice and consent of Dean Gail Greenwell and the Vestry, Senior Warden Don Lane has authorized Christ Church Cathedral's joinder to an amicus brief in
Batalla Vidal v. Duke
and
State of New York v. Trump
, both pending in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. These companion cases challenge the Trump Administration's executive action rescinding DACA, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
DACA protects undocumented children brought to the US from facing deportation and often dangerous conditions existing in their countries of origin. An "amicus brief" is one filed by non-parties to an action who have a keen interest in the outcome of a case. Amicus filings are often referred to as "friends of the court" briefs. In this particular action, the cathedral joins a multitude of other faith communities and non-profit organizations who have signed onto the brief. By joining in, Christ Church Cathedral continues its support of immigrants and sanctuary. Questions? Email Senior Warden Don Lane.

On
February 10
, the Bishop Herbert Thompson Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and the Diocese of Southern Ohio in Association with Christ Church Cathedral will host "Becoming the Beloved Community", the theme for the Annual Absalom Jones Symposium on Racial Justice and Reconciliation and Festal Eucharist. The day will feature the key note address by Dr. Catherine Meeks, retired Clara Carter Acree Distinguished Professor of Socio- Cultural Studies and Author, "Living into God's Dream: Dismantling Racism".
The preacher for the Eucharist will be the Reverend Dr. Gayle Fisher-Stewart, founder of the Center for the Study of Faith and Justice and Associate Rector Calvary Episcopal Church, Washington. The symposium will include area Episcopalians, AME, Lutheran, Methodist and other faith communities.
Since 1981, the Southern Ohio
Chapters and Interest Groups of the Union of Black Episcopalians have sponsored and hosted an annual celebration commemorating the life
and legacy of Absalom Jones, the first
black priest in the Episcopal Church.
For the first 26 years this annual event
was rotated among the four historical Black Congregations in the Diocese - St. Andrews, Cincinnati, St. Margaret's, Dayton, St. Philip, Columbus and St. Simon's, Lincoln Heights served as host and provided hospitality. The highlight of
this annual event was a Festal Eucharist featuring a Mass Choir made up of all four congregations and music from the Negro Spirituals and Gospel traditions. This was augmented by drummers and praise dancers and outstanding preaching. In 2007, the annual rotation of this annual event was expanded to
be a Festal Eucharist sponsored by the Bishop Herbert Thompson Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and the Diocese of Southern Ohio and hosted by Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati. More program information is available

Imposition of Ashes &

Join us on Ash Wednesday as we begin the season of Lent, journeying together toward the Cross - and ultimately the Resurrection. Through the imposition of ashes, we are reminded that we are made from dust and will return to dust. We also experience again the mercy and forgiveness of a loving God.
