The Mayor and Township Committee wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year!

Hillsborough Township Municipal Offices will be closed January 1st in observance of New Year's Day.

The Library will be closed December 31st for New Year's Eve and January 1st for New Year's Day.

The 2018 Reorganization Meeting will be held on 
Tuesday, January 2nd  at 7:00 pm

Note from the Finance Department regarding 2018 Tax Prepayment:

In response to Governor's Christie's Executive Order #237 regarding the prepayment of property taxes,  the Tax Collector's Office will be open on Saturday, December 30th from 8 a.m. until noon to receive tax payments.   Pursuant to this order, payments postmarked no later than  December 31, 2017  will be posted as payments made in 2017 to prepay 2018 property taxes.
HHS Marching Band Honored at December 19th Township Committee Meeting

The Pride of Hillsborough Raider Marching Band had another very successful season due to their hard work and dedication.

The Marching Band received the title of 2017 Group 5 Open New Jersey State Champions and was awarded Caption Awards for Best Music & Best Overall Effect on October 28, 2017. The Band competed at the University of Maryland US Bands Mid-Atlantic Regional placing first in Prelims receiving a score of 96.2125 and also received Caption Award for Best Music, Best Overall Effect, Best Visual Performance and Best Percussion. They advanced to Finals and scored third overall with a score of 96.6 on November 4, 2017.

The Mayor and Township Committee commend all of the members of the Pride of Hillsborough Raider Marching Band, not only for their amazing season,  state title and Mid-Atlantic Regional placement, but also for their unwavering teamwork and dedication this season.

Two Police Officers Promoted to Sergeant

The Hillsborough Township Committee promoted two police officers from the Department to fill vacancies in the position of Sergeant.

Sgt. David Ur was hired August 15, 1995 as an officer in the Patrol Division.  He was a School Resource Officer in the Investigative Division from September 2008 until June 2009.  In April of 2014 he was appointed Corporal in the Patrol Division and continued in that role until January of 2017.  From February of 2017 until  he was promoted to Sergeant  he was a Corporal in the Juvenile Division.  Sgt. Ur and his wife Milagros and have three children.  

Sgt. Peter Scholz was hired on June 1, 1998 as an officer in the Patrol Division.  In February of 2015 he was appointed Corporal in the Patrol Division and served in that role until he was promoted to Sergeant in December of 2017.  Sgt. Scholz and his wife Judy have two children.

Cold Weather Preparedness
Safety Tips
  • Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
  • Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
  • Trickle water through their pipes and increase heating in crawl/ceiling spaces to prevent freezing in the first place.
  • Do not leave pets outside.
  • Children, the elderly and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold snaps. Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don't get too cold.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home to reduce the risk of poisoning. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and muscle and joint pain. Exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide could lead to death within minutes. Those suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning should be immediately taken outside into the fresh air. It's important that they be taken to an emergency room for immediate medical treatment.
  • If you use an outdoor generator at home, place it at least 10 feet away from all doors and windows to avoid exhaust gases entering the home.
  • Stoves, barbeques and ovens can produce carbon monoxide gas, which can be deadly when used to heat a home. Never use these appliances in place of approved heaters such as electric, natural gas or fireplaces.
How to Dress
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing.
  • Wear a hat as 40% of your body heat can be lost from your head.
  • Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
  • Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
  • Try to stay dry and out of the wind.

Jared Colon Honored on Rose Parade Float for Donating Life

On Monday, January 1, 2018, the Donate Life Rose Parade Float will make its 15th appearance in the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena.  NJ Sharing Network and their generous partners,  Bridge to Life  and  Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes  will  once again sponsor three donor families and a transplant recipient to attend the multi-day festivities.    Jared Colon, a Hillsborough resident who died tragically in 2014 at the age of 17, is one of the donors being honored on that float.   Jared saved 6 lives through organs, tissue and cornea donation.  


Hillsborough Township Police Department reminds residents of the Township Ordinance prohibiting the parking of vehicles on snow covered streets.  Keeping the streets free of cars facilitates the Department of Public Works  ability to clear the streets of snow making it safer and more convenient for all
Tickets Now Available for NJ Devils' "My Town" Hillsborough Night
NJ Devils vs Philadelphia Flyers, Jan. 13th

The "My Town" Series Program now in it's 4th year highlights New Jersey towns during National Hockey League games played at the Prudential Center in Newark. The New Jersey Devils tested the program during the 2013-2014 National Hockey League season with 5 New Jersey towns as part of their pilot program. The success of the initial program, lead to an expanded program during the 2014-2015 season and will continue with enthusiasm this season.

This is a great event open to all ages! Tickets and Group Packages will be on sale for township residents who would like to attend. The Hillsborough Police Department will present the Honor Guard at the beginning of the game. Hillsborough Township will be recognized throughout the game, including a group welcome on the scoreboard. Following the game, Hillsborough residents will be invited to the ice for a post-game photo!  In addition, January 13th is Chico Resch mini stick night honoring former Devil and current color commentator Glenn "Chico" Resch. The first 9,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini stick.

News From Somerset County
Deadline Extended to Jan. 12 for Outstanding Women Nominations

Do you know a Somerset County woman who has made extraordinary contributions to her career field or her community?

The  Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women  is seeking nominations for its 2018 Outstanding Women in Somerset County awards program.

"We have many women in Somerset County doing amazing things every day," said Freeholder Patricia Walsh, commission liaison.  "It is most appropriate that during Women's History Month, we take the time to publicly recognize them and say thank you."

Sheriff's Office Receives Donation for Opioid, Heroin Addiction Programs

 At the Oct. 24 freeholders' meeting, Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano was presented two $3,000 checks from Craig Calderaro of Bridgewater on behalf of the Anthony Calderaro Memorial Fund. 

The Fund was created in September 2016 in memory of Mr. Calderaro's son Anthony who succumbed to heroin addiction. The primary goal of the fund is to develop awareness in the community and address the severity of opioid and heroin addiction. 

Sheriff Provenzano was much appreciative of the donation for his agency.  After expressing his condolences to the family he thanked them for the generous donation. "Rest assured the money will be put to good use educating the public, especially our youth about opioid addiction," he said.
The funds are to be allocated for education and prevention programs for both the Law Enforcement Division and the Corrections Division of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office to combat opioid and heroin addiction.
Recycling Delays Due to Holidays & Volume

Due to the Christmas and New Year holidays and a high volume of recyclables, some recycling pickups scheduled in Somerset County the week of  Jan. 1  may be delayed.

Residents are asked to leave their recyclables at the curb. Remaining collections will be completed as soon as possible. The Somerset County Recycling Division thanks residents for their patience and understanding.

The Somerset County Recycling Center will be closed  Monday, Jan. 1 , for New Year's Day. Recycling pickup for residents of Branchburg, Raritan and western Hillsborough will be moved to  Tuesday, Jan. 2 .
