Join us for the 2nd Annual Symposium on Sex Inclusion in Biomedical Research
The WHRI invites you to attend the
2nd Annual Symposium on Sex Inclusion in Biomedical Research
. This day-long symposium promotes the advancement of sex-inclusive research within the basic, translational, and clinical research fields. It fosters knowledge amongst interdisciplinary communities who currently conduct or are interested in sex-based research.
This year's theme, "A Spotlight on Autoimmunity," will feature keynote and plenary lectures from nationally recognized experts in sex-based immunology including Drs. Jayne Danska, Sabra Klein, and Maureen Su. In addition, the symposium will feature a panel discussion on the state of sex-inclusive science, invited abstract presentations, and a poster session.
The symposium is open to the public and all neighboring institutions. Students, post-docs, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend. Breakfast, lunch, and coffee breaks are included in the registration costs. Registration is limited, so

Abstract Deadline Extended!
There's still time to submit an abstract for the 2nd Annual Symposium on Sex Inclusion! The abstract deadline has been extended to January 5th, 2018. We welcome abstracts from all areas of research which feature sex-based or sex-inclusive science.

Illinois Women's Health Registry Gets a New Look
In early 2018, the Illinois Women's Health Registry (IWHR) will be upgrading its software platform to feature a user- and mobile-friendly interface and an updated health survey which will only take 15 minutes of your time to complete! Current Registry participants will be notified in the near future with more details about these changes. In the meantime, investigators can still utilize the Registry for
study recruitment
during this time. For more information about the IWHR, please visit

Save the Date for Monthly Forums in 2018
For the past decade, the WHRI has hosted monthly Women’s Health Forums which highlight basic science, clinical, or sociological research with a focus on the role of sex and gender in health and disease. The forums are open to all members of the Northwestern community, as well as the general public, and attract a diverse and interprofessional audience. Below you will find the schedule for the first half of 2018:

All forums take place from 12:00-1:00 PM in Prentice Women's Hospital. As usual, a light lunch will be provided with registration. Please keep in mind there is no forum in January due to the 2nd Annual Symposium on Sex Inclusion in Biomedical Research.

WHRI 10th Anniversary
On December 10
th
, 2017, the Women’s Health Research Institute celebrated its 10
th
Anniversary with a special monthly forum given by WHRI Director, Dr. Teresa Woodruff. Her lecture entitled, “Science to Care: A Decade of Transforming Women's Health Research at Northwestern and Beyond,” provided an overview of the achievements and accomplishments of the Institute and discussed on-going efforts to promote sex-inclusive science and women’s health research on the local, state, and national level. Following the lecture, the WHRI hosted a celebratory reception with friends, colleagues, and supporters of the Institute.
Over the last decade the WHRI has:
- Championed for sex-inclusive policies, resulting in the 2016 National Institutes of Health policy to consider sex as a biological variable
- Matched thousands of women in to clinical research trials at Northwestern University and beyond through the Illinois Women’s Health Registry
- Supported sex-inclusive research at Northwestern University through the establishment of the Pioneer Awards
- Authored over 900 blogs, 75 newsletters, and numerous peer-reviewed publications dedicated to women’s health and sex-inclusive science
- Hosted more than 90 monthly Women’s Health Research Forums which create awareness of the roles of sex and gender play in health and disease
- Mentored hundreds of young women who will lead the next generation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine through the Women’s Health Science Program
