Youth of the Year Live Oak Winners and Staff
Letter from our Executive Director
Dear Friends,

What a year 2017 was! We served over 2,143 youth in Santa Cruz County  and another 752 through community outreach, with 1,291 registered members at our Downtown Clubhouse and 852 members at our Live Oak Clubhouse. Our Academic Success Programs Power Hour (after-school homework hour during the school year) and Project Learn (our academic success program during the summer) grew. Over 1,033 Club members received homework and academic support during the school year. Our Healthy Lifestyles initiative took off in 2017. 75 members participated in 487 hours of nutritional and health cooking classes and activities. 50 members spent 7.5 hours a week in our garden for our Positive Sprouts Garden program where they learn about plants, nutrition, and healthy habits. Throughout the year, 700 members volunteered their time and energy to make a difference in our community.

After the new year, we wasted no time and hit the ground running with our Spring programming-- introducing new programs such as Tiny Turtles (swim classes for Littles ages 2-5) and perfecting our Character & Leadership programs such as Torch Club at the Live Oak Clubhouse.

Already in 2018 we have hosted a successful First Friday and Family Night on February 2nd, where we featured all our youth art and celebrated the winners that will go on to the Regional Contest (hosted by BGCSCC!).

We are also thrilled to announce our official 2018 Youth of the Year Deshaun Myles, who spoke at our Youth of the Year Banquet on Thursday, February 8th alongside our Live Oak Clubhouse Youth of the Year Genesis Smith and eight other youth who received awards in Mind, Body, Spirit, and Character & Leadership.

It is always a joy and honor to see our members succeed and be celebrated for their achievements in academia, art, character & leadership, and being exceptional youth. We are proud of all our Club members for representing our mission and vision for youth in Santa Cruz County  every single day

What a Place to Become,

Bob Langseth
Executive Director

Deshaun Myles (2018 Youth of the Year Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County), Keisha Frost (Executive Director of United Way Santa Cruz County), and Genesis Smith (2018 Youth of the Year Runner-Up)
Congratulations to our 2018 Youth of the Year Deshaun Myles! And to our 2018 Live Oak Clubhouse Youth of the Year Genesis Smith!

On Thursday, February 8th, staff, volunteers, Club kids, families, and supporters attended our premier youth recognition event. This is a special evening for our members, staff, Board members, and volunteers because it encapsulates and celebrates the essence of Boys & Girls Clubs youth development philosophy and intent.

Enabling our members to be successful is one thing. Realizing full potential clearly lies on the shoulders of individual members who through hard work and determination were able to reach this goal.

Art by Sam, age 14, Live Oak Clubhouse
Our Downtown Clubhouse has achieved net-zero energy consumption.
The project, made possible in part by a loan from Lighthouse Bank, was completed in partnership with Mynt Systems. The energy efficiency performance of the 20,000-square-foot downtown clubhouse was assessed and a plan was implemented to reduce the Club's energy consumption by 58 percent. Consumption was reduced through replacement with energy efficient LED fixtures and lamps, optimization of the indoor pool pump, heating, air conditioning and energy systems. Solar panels were installed on the roof to meet the energy demand of the remaining 42 percent. Read more here.

What's Happening At the Club this Spring

In the Live Oak Clubhouse Education Center...

Alex Martinez, Education Director at Live Oak, started a Building Club in the Spring. Using materials such as Legos, K-nex, blocks, and other constructive items, he is guiding the creative process of free building by providing broad parameters that students need to adhere to with their structures. Each meeting involves a different theme, such as vehicles, buildings, and gadgets. Within each instruction, there are several key words that Club members will learn to explain how their creation fits the explanation. For example, when the students are about to build some type of vehicle, they will explain how they structured their vehicle of choice to be aerodynamic. The goal of the Building Club is to stretch the imagination, encouraging members to be creative, while adhering to guidelines. Live Oak Club members can participate by signing up for Building Club as their Friday Club.

In the Art Room Downtown Clubhouse...

Downtown Arts programming will continue to offer opportunities for yoga, cooking, and baking.

  • The Garden Learning Center is showing signs of new growth, as our winter planting has begun to sprout. Club members are currently growing: herbs, flowers, lettuce, beets, bok choi, kale, radish, onions, garlic, milkweed, sunflowers, Saka purple mustard, peas, cilantro, beans, parsnips, leeks, and turnips. One of our new and Club favorite art activities is Origami.
  • During Spring Break in April, the Art Room will be turning into a "Design Studio", where Club members will have an opportunity to learn about wearable design, jewelry making, sewing, interior design, theatrical hair and makeup, engineering skills, industrial design, and fashion design. The "Design Studio" will culminate in a fashion show at the Downtown Club. Club members are required to come to the Club during Spring Break to be involved in Design Studio.

In the Live Oak Clubhouse...

Program Specialist Jason Chew is leading Torch Club, a group of 10-13 students that focuses on developing character and leadership skills. Including activities such as: beach clean-ups, picking up trash out in the community, going to the local animal shelter, and other recreational activities for fun. Torch Club takes place on Friday afternoons during Friday Clubs for all of Spring.

In the Art Room at Live Oak Clubhouse...

  • The art studio is focusing on 3 big projects. Every Friday in Sewing Club the Littles ages 6-10 are practicing hand stitching and sewing. They are beginning with small projects such as making pillows, puppets and gloves. Then they will learn to sew larger items such as bags and clothes.
  • Every Wednesday a group of 15 teens come to the Art Room for "Teen Art Club" where they are developing their own artistic style. Our art director Irene Valencia focuses on topics such drawing still-life objects, group based painting projects and, eventually, long-term projects for Teens to focus on, whether it's a self portrait, collage work or even simple shading techniques.
  • Cosmetology Club with Teens is every Wednesday. Facilitated by Alexus Stickel, Program Specialist, and Irene, the Cosmetology Club consists of group discussions and workshops about beauty, health, self-esteem, hygiene, hair, makeup, and nails. Cosmetology Club focuses on self-love and acceptance in whatever way makes someone happy rather than feeling pressured to meet society's expectations. As this club progresses, Club members are expected to lead their own workshop on one of the above topics.
Downtown Clubhouse "Lifer" Teens- teens who have been going to the Club since they were in elementary school and still attend today.
