In the Live Oak Clubhouse Education Center...

Alex Martinez, Education Director at Live Oak, started a Building Club in the Spring. Using materials such as Legos, K-nex, blocks, and other constructive items, he is guiding the creative process of free building by providing broad parameters that students need to adhere to with their structures. Each meeting involves a different theme, such as vehicles, buildings, and gadgets. Within each instruction, there are several key words that Club members will learn to explain how their creation fits the explanation. For example, when the students are about to build some type of vehicle, they will explain how they structured their vehicle of choice to be aerodynamic. The goal of the Building Club is to stretch the imagination, encouraging members to be creative, while adhering to guidelines. Live Oak Club members can participate by signing up for Building Club as their Friday Club.

In the Art Room Downtown Clubhouse...

Downtown Arts programming will continue to offer opportunities for yoga, cooking, and baking. 

• The Garden Learning Center is showing signs of new growth, as our winter planting has begun to sprout. Club members are currently growing: herbs, flowers, lettuce, beets, bok choi, kale, radish, onions, garlic, milkweed, sunflowers, Saka purple mustard, peas, cilantro, beans, parsnips, leeks, and turnips. One of our new and Club favorite art activities is Origami. 
• During Spring Break in April, the Art Room will be turning into a "Design Studio", where Club members will have an opportunity to learn about wearable design, jewelry making, sewing, interior design, theatrical hair and makeup, engineering skills, industrial design, and fashion design. The "Design Studio" will culminate in a fashion show at the Downtown Club. Club members are required to come to the Club during Spring Break to be involved in Design Studio.

In the Live Oak Clubhouse...

Program Specialist Jason Chew is leading Torch Club, a group of 10-13 students that focuses on developing character and leadership skills. Including activities such as: beach clean-ups, picking up trash out in the community, going to the local animal shelter, and other recreational activities for fun. Torch Club takes place on Friday afternoons during Friday Clubs for all of Spring.

In the Art Room at Live Oak Clubhouse...

• The art studio is focusing on 3 big projects. Every Friday in Sewing Club the Littles ages 6-10 are practicing hand stitching and sewing. They are beginning with small projects such as making pillows, puppets and gloves. Then they will learn to sew larger items such as bags and clothes. 

• Every Wednesday a group of 15 teens come to the Art Room for "Teen Art Club" where they are developing their own artistic style. Our art director Irene Valencia focuses on topics such drawing still-life objects, group based painting projects and, eventually, long-term projects for Teens to focus on, whether it's a self portrait, collage work or even simple shading techniques.

• Cosmetology Club with Teens is every Wednesday. Facilitated by Alexus Stickel, Program Specialist, and Irene, the Cosmetology Club consists of group discussions and workshops about beauty, health, self-esteem, hygiene, hair, makeup, and nails. Cosmetology Club focuses on self-love and acceptance in whatever way makes someone happy rather than feeling pressured to meet society's expectations. As this club progresses, Club members are expected to lead their own workshop on one of the above topics.
