General Announcements

Forming a Great Kitchen Team now!  Do you like to cook, bake, or just enjoy working in a team in the kitchen?   On Saturday evening, March 24, our Stewardship Committee is hosting a Wine, Heavy Hors-D'Oeuvres, and Dessert Gala.  We'll be serving a variety of yummy finger foods, as we did last year.  We need a team of wonderful people who can assemble the food during the afternoon, starting at 2 and going until  6:30.  You can work for as little as one hour, or more, of course.  Can you help?  This will be great fun.  The food will be mostly ready but lots of hands are needed for assembly, heating and chilling, and serving.  BAKERS:  The CLC will provide dessert for everyone as a fund-raising Bake Sale, but they really need lots more baked goods.  Can you provide some?  For either joining the Kitchen Team or for bringing baked goods, please contact Nancy Roblin at 301.662.8506 or  [email protected], or sign up on the sheet in the left cabinet in the Atrium.

UUCF Budget Requests Due 3/12:  As we seek to align our spending with our mission ("We gather to encourage spiritual growth, build a beloved community, and act for peace and justice"), the UUCF board requests that you include in your budget request a brief description of how each requested amount of money will enable your group to help us support one or more areas of our mission in the next congregational year (July 2018 - June 2019). Although the board understands that new opportunities sometimes develop during the year--such that what you propose may not match what you eventually can accomplish-to the extent possible, please specify not only the activities planned, but also the results hoped for. (For example, $XXX for YYY trips/activities to effect change in legislation affecting ZZZ justice issues). The board also welcomes short "wish lists" of other goals/programs/events you'd like to do if we had additional money to give you.  These lists help our long-term planning and stewardship efforts by providing our community a vision of "what might be" if we had more financial support. Please email budget submission no later than  Monday, March 12  to the following three email addresses: [email protected]; [email protected] or [email protected].

Your Circle of Life Cooperative Preschool is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 School year. We offer weekday preschool for children aged 3 and 4. Our focus is on learning through play, social and emotional skills, and creative problem-solving skills. F or more information, visit us at: frederickuu.org/circleoflife.

Gardening Group: Spring is Just Around the Corner! Rick Anderson, our facilities manager, has asked Alice MacDonald to help coordinate a list of folks who might be interested in helping periodically for an hour or two, as needed, to maintain our flower beds. Tasks could include: weeding, pruning, trimming bushes or planting perennials and bulbs. To join, please email Alice MacDonald at [email protected] or signup at the Adult Ed closet in the Atrium.

Dismantling Racism Team News

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper
Dismantling Racism Team Meeting: Monday, February 26, 6:30 p.m. (Room 113) All are welcome. We will be discussing the Commission on Institutional Change's recommendations to Congregations and their impact on UUCF.

Black Lives of UU: Black Unitarian/AME author and activist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911) spoke at the National Women's Rights Convention in New York in 1866, where she said, "Justice is not fulfilled so long as woman is unequal before the law. We are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity, and society cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving the curse in its own soul." Read more about her here.

Seminary for a Day with The Rev. Dr. Mark Morrison-Reed:  Saturday, March 24, 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cedar Lane UU, Bethesda, MD. From the African Gloster Dalton, who in 1785 was one of the signatories of the Charter of Glouster Universalist Society, to Edna Griffin, who was known as the Rosa Parks of Des Moines, to Rev. Yvonne Seon, who in 1981 was the first African American woman ordainde into the UU ministry, there are many UUs of color of whom UUs are ignorant. Not knowing about this has allowed a false narrative about who UUs have been to flourish. Why, when it comes to African Americans, is there a black hole in white consciousness? and what purpose has it served? Carpooling from UUCF.
