H-F's student-artists competed at the
Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) on Sunday at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago. At this event, high schools from across Illinois were invited to enter artwork in up to six categories, and compete for awards in pottery, time arts, sculpture, design, drawing, painting, photography and mixed media. Our students won four of the 63 total awards at this event, where more than 100 high schools participated and where a total of 568 artworks were on display. Earning awards were:
In addition, junior
Caroline Larocca was offered an early college program offer from the
Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design for her design (
Float). Additional H-F participants were seniors
Alden Derose, Ryan Hutchinson and
Ronnie Simon in the time arts category.
The IHSAE was held simultaneously with the organization's
Senior Scholarship Exhibition, a program that has facilitated $80 million cumulatively for more than 900 students since its first event in 2014. Three H-F senior student-artists presented this year - along with 371 other high school seniors - and all three were offered multiple college scholarships at a total award value of $484,000. Congratulations to

16th Annual Career Fair: Monday, March 12
|
|
Vocations will be on display at the
16th Annual Career Fair, which will be held in the Fieldhouse for students on Monday, March 12. Students will have the opportunity to speak with professionals from a variety of careers, including doctors, reporters, lawyers, engineers, architects, social workers, dentists, bankers, photographers and government officials. Students are expected to speak with at least three exhibitors to get their questions answered about future careers. The day is rewarding for exhibitors as well, as they provide inspiration to students and promote their vocations to the next generation. Exhibitors are treated to breakfast and lunch, and they receive a special thank you gift from the HFPA. For more details about the event - or if you are interested in being an exhibitor this year - please contact

H-F Speech Seniors: Top 2%
Congratulations to three H-F Speech seniors -
Joey Cipriano, Madeline Moxley &
Michael Kennedy - who made their IHSA Individual Events State Finals debuts Feb. 16-17 in Peoria. The H-F qualifiers made it clear they were top-notch speakers, as they all positioned themselves in the top 2% of the entire state of Illinois.
- Joey finished in 9th Place in Extemporaneous Speaking - As an extemporaneous competitor and four-year Speech Team member, Joey is engrossed in a community of friends, competitors and coaches who talk about social issues, international news and politics, giving him a sounding board for this event. His final IHSA destination was a culmination of all his hard work!
- Madeline finished in 10th Place in Informative Speech - She spoke about the cognitive neuroscience approach to studying Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), based on knowledge gained during her internship in a lab at the California Institute of Technology last summer. Her motivation to write the piece was the inspiration she found in others' interested in information about ASD and how they might use to help real people with ASD, such as family members and friends. Her drive to share this important work served her well!
- Michael finished in 8th Place in Original Comedy - He missed the final round by only one point! His reality-based performance was an entertaining journey of a young man who is obsessed with Spider-Man. As a circuit favorite, Michael earned high scores all year, putting him in perfect position to rank at the Finals.

Boys Track & Field: Ranked No. 1 in the State
The No. 1-ranked Viking Boys Track & Field team began the invitational season with a victory at the 16-team Olivet Nazarene University High School Classic last Saturday, which included four of the top 10 ranked teams in the state. There were great performances by all athletes on the team, highlighted by 1st Place finishes by: EJ Burruss in the long jump; Cole Lewis in the high jump; Josh Bridges in the 200 (which was .04 seconds short of a school record!); and Davell Clemon, Tyler Roberson, Jalen Robinson & Christian Reed in the 4-x-400 relay (pictured below), which finished six seconds faster than the 2nd Place team. One race that was not a win for the Vikings, but perhaps one of the most impressive, was the 60m dash in which four Vikings (Josh Bridges, Grant Floyd, Seun Adeyiga & Marcell Ellis) finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th. Come out
this Friday
night as the Vikings host a 12-team indoor invitational in the Fieldhouse, starting at
4:30 p.m.! The team is coached by Mr. Beebe - Applied Academics and Mr. Assise - Mathematics.
