NHDJudges Are Needed for National History Day Event

National History Day in Idaho is an exciting way to engage students in history. The program pulls students out of the classroom and into the world of the professional historian. Students track down information about historic people and events by exploring archives, libraries, and other resources. The program culminates at the national competition held each June at the University of Maryland at College Park. This year's theme, Conflict & Compromise in History, requires you to view history through multiple perspectives.

When: March 3, 2018 (Saturday)

Time commitment: 4-5 hours (breakfast, lunch and gift of thanks will be provided)

Why do it? Judging is an interesting way to connect with students, support your community, and learn about history! Come and be inspired by Idaho students!

History Day judges review entries in a specific category, interview students, provide constructive feedback, and determine which students advance to the next level of competition.

SustainabilityRecycle Your Batteries at CSI

CSI has been recycling batteries since 2010. In that time we have recycled 3,024 pounds! That's a little over 1.5 tons of battery components kept out of the landfill. Great work CSI. Continue to do your part in participating in and promoting sustainable efforts on campus and at home. Yes, you do make a difference.

WorkLifeFocus on Work/Life Balance for Spring Active Lifestyle Challenge
Last Friday as were about to start our three-day weekend, I picked up the phone to call the Helpdesk about a calendar issue between a coworker and me. As the phone was ringing, I looked down to see the time as 4:40 and quickly realized it was too late in the day to bother the Helpdesk with a possible lengthy call. But it was too late. Eric Ness picked up the phone and I apologized for the late call and offered to call again the next week. He insisted there was still time and so we soldiered on. But it wasn't a 15-minute fix, and we did keep Eric past closing time.

When we finished, I remembered my CSI colleague and friend Penny Glenn, who never called or visited without first asking if it was a good time for me to talk. It didn't matter if you worked at a front desk or supervised a department, Penny respected that her need may not be urgent, or especially urgent to you. Do you ever think to call or visit someone during or after business hours by first asking if it's a good time for the other person?

Inc. 5000 stated in a June 2015 column that the Wall Street Journal estimated as many as 44% of employees use their phones to check work email and work-related text after hours. For many, having a smartphone by your side means you can instantly see who's emailed, texted or called you about work-related issues and as part of a desire to deal with urgent issues in the moment, many employees get sucked into responding and dealing with requests long after the workday is done (assuming traditional office hours).

The article continues to site smartphones as the cause for the blurred lines between work and personal time. "What happens when the work keeps piling on and employees feel the pressure to work increasingly long hours just to keep up with the increasingly unrealistic expectations of individual productivity? If the traditional boundaries of "work" vs. "home" have been at least blurred and arguably eliminated, how does the employee ensure reasonable downtime to stop working and recharge his or her batteries?"

As I was about to submit this to the eNotes, I got a call from Eric. He asked if it was a good time to ask an HR question. Life is good.

MeasureCSI Theater Department Presents: "Measure for Measure"
CSI Theater Department presents: "Measure for Measure"
February 28 - March 3
7:30 p.m.
CSI Fine Arts Theater

Once again, the plays of William Shakespeare give us insight and commentary on events in our own culture. Join the CSI Theater Department as we explore the roles of gender in our culture, and how they relate to mercy, hypocrisy, and the abuse of power. The city of Venice is one overrun by brothels and a loose set of morals. The Duke, unwilling to use his authority to institute change departs, leaving Angelo in charge. Angelo, initially reluctant, soon starts to reinstate older, harsher laws to force morality on the city and close the brothels. The changes highlight the hypocrisy of the ruling elite, and the temptation to abuse power. Tickets: $10/adults or $5/seniors or students. CSI students are free.

MusicFestRegistration Now Open for CSI Music Fest
The College of Southern Idaho is now accepting registrations for this summer's Music Fest, which runs June 11 - 15, 2018 at the CSI Fine Arts Center. Registrations will be accepted through May 1.

Music Fest, a music day camp for students age 12 to 18, is an opportunity for students to participate in many areas of music and interact with a faculty of professional music educators from all over the state who are chosen for their expertise in their field and work with youth. Students choose a major and spend significant time each day in classes related to their major. Available majors include strings, vocal, musical theater, percussion, organ, and piano. In addition to work in their major, all students participate in the camp choir and have three elective periods to choose from. There are a wide variety of elective classes to choose from, such as drumming circle, small ensembles, musical theater, girls' choir, and many more. On the last evening of the camp, all students perform in the Music Fest concert.

CSI Music Fest is exceptionally affordable. Tuition is $195 for early bird tuition prior to March 15 or $225 after March 15. This fee covers all program costs for the students, including instructional materials. Housing is available for those students wishing to homestay with Twin Falls students and their families. Other optional items such as photos, lunches, and private lessons are also available for an additional cost. All students must be registered by May 1. A limited number of needs-based scholarships are available.

For more information or to obtain a registration form, go to www.csi.edu/musicfest or stop by the CSI Fine Arts Center. You can also call Camille Barigar at 732-6288 or e-mail cbarigar@csi.edu.
