A new year brings new promise for most of us. But what about our neighbors who struggle against displacement brought on by escalating development? It is for them and all of us who benefit from a diverse Somerville that SCC will continue our work to ensure that people of all backgrounds can live and thrive in Somerville. 

For example, read about the next phase of our inaugural Culinary Arts Training through our First Source Jobs Program. And check out my CEO Forum on some of the projects that we will grow this year -- like our 100 homes project that now stands at  45.

SCC held its first-ever Annual FUNd Open House and Cake Party in December. Fifty adults and children came out for this holiday event. What a fun evening. Additionally, almost everyone who came contributed to our Annual Fund. 

We are also so pleased to announce that we surpassed our goal of raising $300,000 for the Social Equity Campaign via CITC.

With the Wynn Casino in Everett scheduled to open next year, approximately 4,000 new jobs are expected to be created in the region, with many in the culinary and hospitality sector.  SCC's Culinary Arts Training program will connect local residents with these opportunities. 

Currently, 10 program participants have completed the first phase of the training and have begun attending four college credit classes at Bunker Hill Community College.



Volunteers Needed for Mock Interview Prep

The First Source Jobs Program is looking for volunteers to help job seekers practice interviewing skills to prepare for job interviews. You will be helping our program participants advance their careers, build confidence and build economic resilience. 

This is a great opportunity to develop your cross-cultural communication skills. And you will have the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people.  Read more.


Narefsky Moves to NYC: She Will Be Missed
Karen Narefsky at LDI
Karen Narefsky, an organizer with Somerville Community Corporation for the past five years, has had an exciting opportunity offered to her to continue her organizing work in New York City. She will support tenant organizing.

Karen has been a major force behind the work to ensure development without displacement in Union Square and other City neighborhoods.   Check back next month for a profile of Karen's accomplishments while at SCC.
