Paly Track & Field, parent meeting, and sign up now NEW
The track and field season officially starts on  January 29 .  There will be a parents meeting on January 23, 5:30 pm , in the Peery Center, room 2030 (downstairs in the small gym) to communicate important information about this year's T&F season.  To join Paly's Track and Field team you need to do two things:

Paly Juggling Club presents its first ever three-day, free-to-the-public, juggling festival-Game of Throws! NEW
When :  Friday, January 26 5pm-12am, Saturday, January 27 9am-12am, and Sunday, January 28 9am-5pm
Where:  Small Gym of Peery Family Center
Who:  Anyone who wants to learn more about the circus arts and see some amazing feats of manipulation
Cost:  FREE
We have jugglers coming from all over to share tricks, teach workshops, compete in games, and have fun!  
The Gala Show at 7pm on Saturday night in the Performing Arts Center will feature America's Got Talent Finalists The Passing Zone, Cirque du Soleil instructor (& Paly teacher) Matt Hall, as well as several other juggling and circus champions.  Tickets are $10 at the door and available online at the Paly Webstore ( paly.net ).  The show will finish by 9pm and will include a 10-15 minute intermission. Bring the kids!!

Class of 2018 (Seniors) Parent Network Meeting UPDATED

Our next Parent Network meeting will be a discussion of Frank Bruni's book Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania. Our discussion leaders will be Heidi Mickelsen and Anuja Lele, who are members of Paly's Challenge Success Team and parents of Paly seniors. Our discussion will be illuminating whether or not one has read the book. 
Note: on Feb. 21, the Parent Ed Committee will host an evening "fishbowl" presentation on this book. The Feb. 21 presentation is open to students and teachers as well as parents. Please check the Paly Link newsletter for details.
We'd also welcome some fruit or treats to share at our Jan. 26 meeting.

NEW DATE and BOOK SUMMARY for Paly Community Book Group:  Where You Go is Not Who You'll Be

Paly's Challenge Success Committee invites all  Paly parents, students, and staff to read Frank Bruni's book about the college admissions process and how we can have a more balanced approach to this process.  The committee will be hosting a student-teacher-parent "fishbowl" and discussion on Wednesday, February 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the MAC.  We invite parents, students, and staff to attend and hear perspectives from representatives from all three groups.

Instrumental Music Concert
January 25th, 2018, 7:00pm, Performing Arts Center
Come and hear the Paly Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  The program includes music of Bach, Copland, Morton Gould and more.  Admission is free.

Paly Media Arts Open House
Wednesday, January 31st, 2018, 6:00-8:00 PM, in the Paly Media Arts Center
Please join us for the third annual Paly Media Arts Center (MAC) Open House!  Come and hear about all of the media arts programs and meet some of the students and staff who run them. There will be tours of the building, information about Camp Mac and the MAC Boosters, and you will see Paly students busy creating the next edition of the school newspaper, The Campanile. If your student is interested in any type of media arts, come see what Paly has to offer. Drinks and dessert will be served. 

Palo Alto Parent Education Series: Screening of ANGST

Join us as we continue the dialogue of anxiety among our teens and learn what tools have been used successfully to help. This is a free event, brought to you by the PTSA and is most relevant to parents and teens over the age of 12. Food/ Beverages donations needed for the Wellness Center NEW
Our students are very happy when there are tea and snacks available in the Wellness Center! Once again we seek your help in providing decaffeinated tea bags, cocoa, healthy nut free foods, fresh fruit and vegetable trays for the kids who stop by the Wellness Center. If you are interested in donating any of these items, please drop them off in the Wellness Center, located in the Tower Building, anytime during the school day. Paly Tower Building; Ongoing;  Light refreshments for teens during the school week
So many students just don't have time to get breakfast before heading off to school in the mornings. We, in the Main Office have been offering snacks (bars, crackers, fruit snacks, etc.) to any student who needs a pick-me-up at brunch in the Tower Building Hallway. Every single day, 40 -50 kids grab something to keep them going until lunch (For some it is their lunch, and their breakfast). If anyone wants to contribute, here is a link to an Amazon Wishlist. Fiery Arts Glass Workshops at Palo Alto High School 
Sat & Sun. Jan. 20-21; Feb. 3-4, 17-18; March 3-4, 17-18; April 7-8, 21-22; May 5-6, 19-20; June 2-3; 9-3 pm at Palo Alto High School's Glass Studio, 50 Embarcadero Rd.
Th ese workshops are open to the public, students and parents. You learn glass blowing technique in this hands-on 2-day weekend workshop. Advanced Sign up is required. Class limit is 4. Teens and adults. $425 per person. Proceeds benefit the Palo Alto High School Fiery Arts Boosters.

Paly Community Scholarship Program application for Seniors due 
Jan. 22
The sponsors of various community scholarships ask Paly's Scholarship Committee to nominate and/or select students to be considered for/receive awards. To be participate in this scholarship program, students must complete the Paly Community Scholarship Application and return it to Ms. Cernobori (hard copy) by  January 22nd .
Please read this  letter for more information about the program.
Students received a copy of the program application from their TAs but can also access the application  here.
A reminder that students who want to be considered for need-based scholarships in the program must provide family financial information on the last page of the application; in addition, these applicants are also required to submit a copy of the Student Aid Report (including the EFC) they receive after filing the FAFSA along with their scholarship application. This information is kept confidential. Samples of acceptable EFC documentation can be found  here.
Please refer to Sandra Cernobori's Nov. 28 email for information about applying for need-based financial aid using the FAFSA. Be sure to check each campus website for deadlines and other forms required in addition to FAFSA, if applicable.

College Rep Visits for Seniors (and Juniors, if space is available) 
Students must have their teacher's permission one day in advance if missing class. Pick up a form in the C&CC, or download it at admit-class-form-college-and-career-center . Bring the signed form the day of the visit to ensure the absence from class is cleared and marked as an activity rather than a truancy. College visits scheduled for the next two weeks are listed below. How Does Sugar Affect Your Health and What You Can Do About It

Join us for an educational night on sugar.  Learn how sugar came to be ubiquitous in everything we eat, and became a number one health issue due to its harmful effects on the human body.  As parents, you will also get some great tips on how to combat sugar in your household and diet, and reintroduce great nutrition to your kids.  Patricia Caldera, Ph.D will be presenting on behalf of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation and Dr Lustig education program dedicated to changing our views of processed food with the purpose of ending food related illnesses and promote good health.  We encourage parents to bring their children.

Stanford University & City of Palo Alto Comp Growth NEW
There is a significant project from Stanford University that will be coming upon PAUSD that may require your attention -- Stanford University's growth and expansion proposal and its impact within our city and school district.  Stanford plans to add more academic and support facilities, housing units, childcare center and facilities to its camp, adding approx. 9,000 people to our area.  Your comments regarding the significant environmental effects of this project and the adequacy of the Draft EIR are welcome.  The public review period for this Draft EIR ends on Feb 2, 2018

Ongoing Stanford University Brain Study on Executive Function Skills

Silicon Valley Boychoir Auditions
Thurs, Jan 18 and Fri, Jan 19 by appointment, Palo Alto
Auditions for the January semester will be held at the choir's rehearsal location near downtown Palo Alto (600 Homer Ave). Open to 2nd-5th grade boys.  High school and middle school boys with choral experience may audition for upper levels.  SVB provides a personalized approach to teaching singing, music theory, and sight-reading, while providing flexible scheduling for busy families.  In addition to their own winter and spring concerts, SVB performs for local events including appearances with Stanford University Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra, West Bay Opera, Schola Cantorum of Mountain View, and singing the national anthem at sporting events.
