Lake Crabtree Connection

March 2018
Spring Program Revival!
The return of spring means the return of many of our seasonal programs!

On March 7, from 1 to 2 p.m., Storytime for Tots comes out of hibernation with From Tadpole to Frog. Spring is almost here, and frog calls will soon begin! Learn about the life cycle of the frog, and discover where they can be heard and seen around the park. Practice your best frog jump, catch bugs like a frog, and meet some of the park's amphibians.

Homeschool and Track-out Series programs are geared toward homeschool students ages 6-13, but are open to tracked-out students as well. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay and participate or drop their student off. This month's offering is Weather Wonders. This program investigates the basics of meteorology: what causes the weather, how meteorologists study it, and why it is important that they do! Students will go on a hike to collect some real world weather data and play Lake Crabtree's Weather Jeopardy game.

Also making its debut on March 16, is our new monthly program Nature Nerds! Expand your knowledge of our local flora and fauna by exploring a different area of the park each month. Join park staff as they "nerd out" over amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, and anything else they see or hear along the way. Help collect data for the Natural Resource Inventory Database while increasing your own identification skills.

Crabtree Casters, returns on April 4, from 6:30-8 p.m. Whether you already enjoy fishing or would like to learn how to fish, this program is for you! Bring your own poles or borrow one of ours. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Wild Side:
 Super Soil!

Did you know that soil contains living as well as nonliving material?  There can be billions of microorganisms in a single teaspoon of soil, as well as larger soil dwelling critters! The living organisms in soil break down dead plant and animal matter and release nutrients, which help plants to thrive.  Plants also obtain the water, which they need to live, through soil and soil provides the structure that helps plants to stay upright.

Soil comes in different types, based on the size of the particles and organic matter that it contains. The type of soil in an area will determine the types of plants that can survive in that area. Because soil is so vital to plants, it is also vital to us!

Join us to learn more about this amazing substance, which we depend on for our very existence, in our "Super Soil Science!" program on Saturday, March 10. Preregistration is required for this program. Visit our website to register online.
