A Note From Vesta:
This is an invitation for everyone, near and far, to be part of the sermon this Sunday, January 7, when we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The focus
of the day will be gifts -- the gifts God gives us, the gifts we use in God's service, and the idea and purpose of gifts in general. I encourage every one of you to think, over the next few days, about the gifts you have received that you can use to enrich our common life -- here in the congregation, and in your larger communities as well; and also to think about what the giving and receiving of
gifts means in your life and culture. On January 7, the "sermon" will be a congregational discussion of these matters. I hope everyone who can attend will have something to contribute to the discussion, and I invite those of you who will not be present in person to send me your thoughts via email to
[email protected].

Outreach Ministry Update
As reported last week, after the service on January 14th the Outreach Ministry will be hosting a post service discussion focused on St. Brendan's potential outreach priorities. As we move toward consensus, we hope to get your thoughts as to what outreach might look like at St. Brendan's - what qualities would most engage the parish and the community and spur the greatest individual commitment, and what specific projects we might undertake. (On the latter point , some of the ideas that came up at the Ministry's last meeting include Community Meals and Food Insecurity, Domestic Abuse, Adult Education and Funds for College.) Your thoughts regarding existing efforts in our local community will also be welcome, so that we may assess where there are needs we might address and where there might be opportunities for collaboration. We would welcome any such thoughts you can send us prior to the discussion, especially if you are unable to attend. (Please send them to Martha Dane, [email protected], prior to January 10th.)
As you formulate your thoughts and suggestions, keep in mind our Ministry Description, which calls us to:
Develop one or two outreach ministries focused on the needs of
residents of Deer Isle and the peninsula, ministries that, in addition
to helping people in need, will begin to forge a 'parish identity' and
provide a strong ecumenical, service and evangelism impact.
We will compile your suggestions and put them up for discussion on the 14th, along with what bubbles up during our gathering.
We look forward to seeing you all and hope that everyone feels welcome to share their gifts with the community.

A Look back at St. Brendan's History
Following is a brief description of the story of how Barbara Coan and
Marcia Scott founded St. Brendan's:
In the early 1980s, Barbara Coan - an Episcopalian - and her husband, Ed, moved from Southwest Harbor to Stonington to establish a marine electronics business on the waterfront in Stonington, just below where Fran and Larry Greenlaw lived.
Marcia Scott's sister, The Rev. Jacqueline Merrill (1st female Episcopalian deacon ordained in Maine), and friend of Barbara's, facilitated an introduction of the two since Marcia lived in Deer Isle and was also an Episcopalian.
After meeting and attending a service at St. Mary's by the Sea Roman Catholic in Stonington, the two decided to contact Bishop Wolf's office in Portland to inquire what it would take to start an Episcopal church on Deer Isle. Marcia recalls that she, Barbara and Bill Flagg (science teacher at the high school) met to discuss the possibility of having an Episcopal service on the island, and agreed to proceed and place an ad in the
Island Ad-Vantages for a Eucharist to be celebrated on a Sunday afternoon (circa July, 1982) at St..Mary"s.
Barbara then contacted an Episcopal priest who was vicar at St. James, Old Town, to preside, and who also brought a few University of Maine students with him to attend the service. There were a total of 29 in attendance at that service. Refreshments were served on the church lawn, and there was overall consensus to continue having services. The Rev. David Plank, vicar of Trinity, Castine then conducted Episcopal services at St. Mary's Sunday afternoons at 1:30 PM for a year until he was called to a parish on Long Island, NY.

Following are excerpts from a Christmas card note Marcia Scott received recently from Barbara Coan's daughter Sue, and is being shared with Marcia's permission:
Thank you so much for thinking of my mom, Barbara Coan so faithfully. I always show her your card and remind her that she co-founded St. Brendan the Navigator with you. At this point your name seems familiar to her and she always seems a bit incredulous that she ever accomplished such a momentous thing!
Please don't feel insulted that she doesn't remember details about you or St. Brendan's.... She's her usual happy self, just with very little in the way of memories and self care. She lives in the moment and is mostly grateful for the help she receives. ...she 94 years old now !
You can keep her on your Christmas card list, but if you decide to just keep her in your prayers instead it will be just as meaningful to her.
As for me and my sisters and brothers, , we are already touched by your consistent regard for her. Thank you!
You are in my prayers. Hope all is well with St. Brendan's!

Scripture Notes for the First Sunday After Epiphany:
Today is one of four occasions designated by the Book of
Common Prayer as baptismal days. (The others are Easter, Pentecost, and All Saints.) Each of
the four days has its particular theme, which enhances our understanding of this primary
Christian sacrament, Holy Baptism.
On this first Sunday after the Epiphany, we celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord. Jesus' baptism
was for all the Gospel writers, and in the apostolic preaching of the Gospel, the event which
initiated the redemptive ministry of the Messiah. It was in that event that Jesus was revealed as
the Messiah (Christ). God proclaimed him Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. The first
reading is the beginning of the creation account. The water and the wind or Spirit from God at
the beginning point us to
our recreation by water and the Holy Spirit in baptism.
The second
reading gives an account of the baptism of the first Gentiles into the name Way of Jesus.
In Holy Baptism each person is adopted as the child of God. Each person becomes a "messianic"
person, anointed by the Holy Spirit. We do not simply become passive recipients of the benefits
of Christ; we are "christed" or christened. We become sharers in his life and in his redemptive
ministry.
All those who are baptized and anointed are received "into the household of God." They join
with that household in confessing "the faith of Christ crucified," proclaiming his resurrection and
sharing in his eternal priesthood-the priesthood which we enact sacramentally in the Eucharist
and daily in lives of self-giving love toward one
another and toward the world.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses especially Rev. Edward Dufresne, William Rice Sr., Elaine Graham, Patricia P,
Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Kathy Gray, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Nancy Stearns, Andrew Harriman, Tom Davenport, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Sen. John McCain, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Claire. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the victims of human trafficking and those working to combat it. For those in the diocese engaged in Living Local: Joining God.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand & Polynesia.
On the Island and Peninsula,
we pray for Eggemoggin Reach Society of Friends, Sargentville.
