STEM and Literacy Professional Development
|
Creating connections between children's literature and STEM activities is a successful strategy for increasing outcomes for kids during the critical out of school time. The Chicago Public Library and Museum of Science and Industry have created a replicable model for linking these two areas that promote critical 21st Century Learning Skills with fun and engaging activities.
Join Liz McChesney, Director of Children's Services at Chicago Public Library and Bryan Wunar, Director of Community Initiatives at the Museum of Science and Industry for a look at their partnership model, outcomes they have achieved for youth in Chicago and for practical and fun ideas to take back to the youth in your own program. Participants will learn how to link science to children's books, learn about designing engineering challenges based on books and will receive a booklist of 100 book recommendations to use in this work.
McChesney and Wunar are co-authors of the book, Summer Matters: Making All Learning Count, (ALA, 2017) and are currently writing the book Summer Matters: The More You Know the More you Can Do (ALA, forthcoming, 2018). In 2015 they won NSLA's prestigious Founder's Award for Excellence in summer programming. In 2016 their work won the American Library Association's John Cotton Dana award for their work. They have been awarded a federal IMLS grant replicate their work. They speak about this work nationally and internationally and are looking forward to visiting Des Moines with the CIOST Network.
