HAIS Learning Walks - Spring 2018
HAIS Member Schools are invited to participate in the Spring 2018 Learning Walks!  The goal of the Learning Walks is to improve practice through observation and reflection, while building collaboration among colleagues from HAIS member schools. Participants will spend a day observing at a host school, giving them the opportunity to reflect on their own practices and connect with like-minded educators.
Each participating school will follow a similar schedule, hosting a group of up to 12 educators from other HAIS member schools. The visit will last approximately 5 hours and HAIS will cover the cost of food and beverages up to $25 per participant. Please complete the interest form by Friday, February 23, if you would like to participate in the 2018 Learning Walks. Once we have identified the host schools and dates, we will open registration for participation by educators from HAIS member schools. Educators will have the opportunity to select a host school to visit, based on their interests. Registration will open the first week of March.

SOTF Call For Proposal Deadline: March 1

Be a part of the 10th annual Schools of the Future Conference! We are seeking proposals related to pedagogy and best teaching practices to help educators prepare student learners for the future. 

To submit a proposal, please complete the  2018 SOTF Submission Form. For your reference, we have also created a  Proposal Planning Template. 

The deadline to submit a proposal is March 1, 2018 and notifications will be sent by April 27, 2018.

HAIS Open House! - Mar. 15

A new blog post was released on February 20, and is titled " Education Cheat Sheet: Making With a Community Purpose." HAIS Workshop by High Tech High 
Concrete Tools for Unpacking Complex Problems: How to Lead for Equity and Other Challenges in a PBL Setting 
How can we use improvement science to develop robust project based learning cultures in our classrooms and schools? In this interactive workshop, participants will use the versatile tools of Improvement science - including empathy interviews, fishbone diagrams, and interrelationship digraphs - to dig into a problem of practice. Participants will leave with protocols and tools they can use with students and colleagues to help foster a learning culture and guide systematic improvement in their own context. This workshop is designed for change-makers at all levels-teachers, school/district leaders.
 
The workshop will be led by Daisy Sharrock - Project Director, Mathematical Agency Improvement Community, High Tech High Graduate School of Education. Please visit the HAIS Website for more information.

Mastery Transcript - This track aims to provoke thinking about what learning and assessment could be. Speakers will explore alternative models of assessment, crediting, and transcript generation, while focusing on how to create better learning environments for students.

Fundraising and Development - The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) will be leading breakout sessions geared towards engaging your entire school community in fundraising efforts. University President's Forum - The Presidents of Chaminade University, University of Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific University will come together for a panel discussion to discuss what our local universities have to offer and how they are shifting to better accommodate today's learners. 

Board Relations - Bob Peters and Randy Moore will spend an hour discussing how to create partnerships with board members and establish productive relationships. They will also discuss how the board chair and head of school can effectively work as a team and where the board roles and responsibilities intersect.

Ask the Funders - Join the leaders from the Hawai'i Community Foundation, HKL Castle Foundation, and Sam & Mary Castle Foundation as they talk about what they look for in choosing to fund an organization. 

HAIS Standard Application Rollout - The Enrollment Management Association (EMA) will be leading breakout sessions to further discuss the HAIS Standard Application, its benefits, how to use important features, and more.

Scholar's App Website Resource

Scholar's App is a website with a scholarship search engine that focuses on local scholarships, and allows students to apply for scholarships online. All the scholarships are verified by college counselors or by the Scholars App team before being posted to the website, to ensure the quality of scholarships. Students can create an account which allows them to be matched to scholarships. Once they find a scholarship they want to apply to they will be shown a simplified yes or no question form to double check they are a match and are eligible. They share the information on the student's qualification, application, and award status with the counselor at the school the student attends. Billion Trees of Aloha Project: Mar. 1
The Eco-Opps website has been launched, and with it comes the opportunity to participate in their Billions Trees of Aloha project, the brain child of the World Youth Congress hosted in Hawai'i last year. I f every child and youth planted one tree in this world, we would plant and care for more than a billion trees in 2018. This year, the senior research projects advancing to the HSSEF 2018 include  students  from the following HAIS schools: 'Iolani, Kamehameha  Schools, Mid-Pacific Institute, Punahou School, and St. Andrew's Priory. 2018 Hawai'i STEM Conference: Apr. 10 - 11
The Women in Technology Project (WIT) has announced the 2018 9th Annual Hawai'i STEM Conference. They invite teachers and students to register to attend, as well as organizations to participate through sponsorship, break-out session presentations, and interactive exhibitor playg rounds. Contributing sponsors will allow over 1,000 students and teachers who are positively impacting communities to continue to be introduced to, and continue to be exposed to, innovative technologies.  The conference will be held April 10 - 11 at the Hawai'i Convention Center on Oahu. ASHG DNA Day Essay Contest: Apr. 25
National DNA Day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003 and the discovery of the double helix of DNA in 1953. This year's DNA Day will be on  Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Teachers and students around the world can celebrate by participating in the American Society of Human Genetics' (ASHG) 13th Annual DNA Day Essay Contest.  This contest is open to students in grades 9-12, and asks students to examine, question, and reflect on important concepts in genetics.  Submissions are now open; for more details and to submit an essay, please go to their website. Letter Carriers' Food Drive: May 12
The 26th National Association of Letter Carriers Union Food Drive is coming up this May. Those who want to donate can do so by leaving non-perishable food/canned goods by your mailbox on May 12 for your mail carrier to pick up. The donated food will be delivered to the local Foodbank, which supplies multiple non-profits and feeding programs in Hawai'i. Canned protein is most needed. Kupu HYCC Summer Program: June 4 - July 21

Kupu is an environmental non-profit that provides opportunities to young adults across the state to get outdoors and connect with the land, and their Hawai'i Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) Summer Program application deadline is approaching. A few spots are still available for students aged 17-20 as Team Members, and aged 21+ as Team LeadersThose who participate can earn college credits through UH Manoa, achieve CPR/AED certifications, receive Volunteer Awards, and more. USDA & UH summer AgDiscovery Program: July 8 - 21
USDA and UH Mānoa 2018 AgDiscovery Program will be held July 8 - July 21. This is summer program is for students ages 14-17 who are interested in agricultural science. If selected, students get to stay at UH Mānoa Campus and explore agriculture through hands-on activities throughout Oahu Island. The Program covers plant science, horticulture, entomology, wildlife sciences, veterinary sciences, traditional agriculture, dog detection, and more. Moanalua Gardens Foundation (MGF) and DLNR's Division of Forestry and Wildlife are offering a free workshop for fourth grade teachers on their Huaka'i o Kamananui, Aloha Aina Moanalua place-based environmental education curriculum . The curriculum meets Common Core and HCPS III Standards   and Nā Honua Mauli Ola Hawaiian Guidelines. Attendees will get a turnkey curriculum, learn about teaching opportunities in Kamananui Valley, and receive free bus transportation for their students.

Hawai'i Science Teachers Association (HaSTA) is a member of the National Science Teachers Association and strives to provide professional development and collaboration for science educators in Hawai'i. They will be holding a conference focusing on "Next Generation of Science Teachers." The keynote speaker will be Buffy Cushman-Patz, Founder and Principal of School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability. The conference will include break-out sessions with practical applications for teachers, drawings and door prizes, a science supplies swap meet and refreshments. The 2017-2018 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program seeks to recognize outstanding mathematics or science teachers at the elementary level (grades K-6) in a  public, private, or charter school.  Nominations close on  April 1, 2018, and all application materials by K-6 teachers must be submitted by May 1, 2018. Hawai'i TECC Teacher Job Fair: Apr. 28
The Hawai'i Teacher Education Coordinating Committee (TECC) Teacher Job Fair provides DOE, charter, and independent school administrators with the opportunity to meet with and/or interview teacher candidates who are seeking employment for the 2018-2019 academic year. Each school that participates will be provided with a table and chairs. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to school administrators/staff. Registration is now open for Responsive Classroom training for elementary or middle school.
