Strive to be more

Dear Parents,

The metro area continues to battle the high rate of flu diagnoses and other illnesses.  To minimize the spread of germs at STM, student desks are wiped down daily, and often several times before the end of the day.  Please remember to do your part:  children must be fever  free/symptom free for 24 hours without taking anti-fever medications before returning to school.  Please also refrain from administering anti-fever medication and sending your child to school.  When they need medication, they should remain home to help them heal and to limit the spread of infection.  Thank you for taking these precautions seriously.

The most recent school shooting has once again focused all of us on the security and safety of the children during the school day.  I would like to reassure you that the STM faculty and staff take part in annual training to review safety and security measures.  The students and staff participate in lockdown drills both independently and also with the guidance and observation of the Arlington County Police Department in coordination with STM's School Resource Officer, Detective Jackie Pagan.  STM works hard to maintain security, but I also remind you to follow the procedures that are already in place.  Students are prohibited from opening a school door to visitors, so please don't encourage them to admit you.  All visitors must enter through the main gate and sign in at the front office. Security is everyone's job.  Working together, the St. Thomas More Cathedral School community will continue to remain safe and secure.

On a personal note, please be aware that I am not in the building this week and possibly next as I assist my siblings with the care of our ailing mother.  Please keep her and my family in your prayers as we gather with her to make critical care decisions. We remain hopeful that she will celebrate her 100th birthday on March 4th.

God bless,

Eleanor McCormack
