St. Michael's Academy
  :

Let's hope the snow will take a break for awhile and allow us to have a solid four weeks of school before February vacation!

In the meantime, we have a lot going on here at school. In preparation for Catholic Schools Week, we are collecting items for the Gray House, collecting items for our raffle baskets and, of course, selling our lottery calendars. Each student has the option of providing an item for the grade themed baskets or sending in a donation.  Each family that sells five calendars will earn a dress-down day that will be determined at a later date.

Our school-wide Open House and Family Heritage Celebration will kick off Catholic Schools Week on Sunday, January 28th and the week will wrap up with our Pasta Supper on February. During the week, we have many activities planned for the faculty and students. Don't forget that tickets for the Pasta Supper will not be sold at the door and we need lots of volunteers for the evening.

If you know of anyone interested in possibly sending their child to St. Michael's Academy, please encourage them to attend the Open House on the 28th. There will be a brief presentation at noon for prospective students and their families.

Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Perfect Attendance

Good Attendance Pays Off !

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Congrats to this week's winners!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

Even when it's very, very cold and snowy, our students here at SMA are working hard.  Whether it's working in our classrooms or at home on our Blizzard Bags on a snow day, our students are hard at work and we are very proud of them!  The students in 2A were very excited when I introduced the Blizzard Bags to them back in December and they were anxiously awaiting for a snow day to arrive when they could finally work on them.  I am proud to say after the first two snow days, I had a 100% participation. What a great way to start the New Year with all this enthusiasm!

It's hard to believe that we end the second quarter today.  The students have shown great improvement in all areas of learning.  From basic addition and subtraction facts to now adding two-digit numbers with regrouping. They love and are so excited to be working on this new concept in math.  In our reading classes, we continue learning about a variety of genres and have been digging deeper into the text looking for facts, opinions, the author's purpose for writing, main ideas and supporting details just to name a few.  We then used text and graphic features, along with looking for text evidence, to support their findings.

They continue to grow deeper in their Catholic faith as this year is an exciting time for them.  Congratulations to many of our students who have made their second sacrament this year - the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.  As we begin Unit 3, the Eucharist will be our main focus as we learn about the Mass.  We will explore the parts of the Mass including what happens at the beginning of the Mass, during The Liturgy of the Word, The Liturgy of the Eucharist and at the end of the Mass.  In the spring, they will make their First Holy Communion; a day they are anxiously waiting!

All the students are looking forward to our Open House and Family Heritage Celebration that begins Catholic Schools Week on January 28th.  We have many activities happening, both school wide and in our classroom all week.  We will welcome our grandparents during our Warm Winter Wishes Celebration as we show our love and appreciation for all that they do for us and our school.  Grandparents will be in for a nice treat as we spend the morning socializing and entertaining them.  It's sure to be a grand time for all!

  Calendar Raffle

Getting Ready To Win Some $$ !!

Everybody wants to be a winner, right? It's easy -   just buy a St. Michael's Academy Raffle Calendar   and you might be a lucky winner! Each family has   been given 5 calendars to sell for $10 and are due   Friday, January 26th. Each calendar provides you   with  28  chances to win. How do you beat that?

And any family that sells 5 calendars will receive a dress-down day!  Go for it!

Ten Gift Baskets Everyone Would Love To Win !

And don't forget the raffle baskets! Each grade will be creating a themed-based gift basket! These are the baskets that are raffled off during Catholic Schools Week and there is not one in the bunch that you wouldn't want to win. We are asking families to donate one item per student to include in the basket. Don't have time to shop? No worries - send in a few dollars and we'll do the shopping for you!

We are also looking for one parent per grade level to coordinate the donations and create the basket. Show off your creative flair and volunteer!

Just a reminder....the basket and calendar raffles are just one of only two fund-raising activities that St. Michael's Academy does throughout the entire school year. We appreciate your support!!

  Keeping Our Children Safe

Grades 3 and 4 Learn About Internet Safety

Students in grades 3 and 4 attended a presentation today about internet safety presented by the Springfield District Attnorney's office and area youth. Students learned how to use the internet safely and how to make smart choices in their everyday lives to reduce any threat to their safety.

We thank Springfield District Attorney Anthony Gulluni for spending time today with our students and helping to reinforce the message of safety.

It also happens that one of our students, Nick, is the cousin of the District Attorney!

 Traffic Safety

And Speaking of Safety, Safety, Safety!

Please, please, please obey the traffic pattern during morning and afternoon drop off times.  With the addition of snow to the already challenging drop off of over 470 students, it is absolutely critical to follow the established routine, for safety purposes. Traffic should flow in a one way pattern with parents and guardians dropping off on the school side of the street.  No U-turns are allowed and please DO NOT pull through the parking lot to drop off.  And finally, patience is a must!!!

Thank you!
