HISTORY HAS ITS EYES ON SHORTRIDGE

As we close another high school basketball season, we would be remiss from not reliving the history of the past 50 years...and a step back in time to 1968
when the Shortridge Blue Devils contended as State high school hardwood champions.

In late November, 2017, a special SAA recognition of school letter sweater recipients was held to honor the efforts of students who earned a coveted letter sweater during their years at Shortridge. Slightly less than 100 people attended the reception and basketball game; many wore their letter sweaters/jackets, including several of the 1968 basketball team members where everyone enjoyed the last basketball game between the Shortridge Blue Devils and Broad Ripple Rockets. (Unfortunately Shortridge lost both the JV and varsity games). However, the evening was definitely a winner as alumni from BOTH schools attended for an enjoyable evening to acknowledge the schools' rivalry throughout the years. Shortridge will happily receive Broad Ripple students and the arts program beginning with the 2018-2019 school year as Broad Ripple will close.

Click on the link below to read the chronology of many events since our school's distinction of being the first free (public funded) high school in the state. "Indianapolis High School, as it was called at that time, was formed in 1864 but didn't have classes until 1865 when 23 students who passed entrance exams began attending classes;" the rocky road traveled from then until now.

As well, alumnus Michael Edgar Myers (Class of 1971) has contributed numerous stories of the 1968 Blue Devils as they nearly achieved Indiana high schools' basketball crowning glory -- State Basketball Champions! Read some of Michael's blog notes of that era: https://wp.me/p9piiH-4h

Thank you, Michael...as we celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Class of 1968 and the Hardwood Heroes of that year.

Alumni still are encouraged to purchase a brick; proceeds support the Shortridge Legacy Scholarship Fund. Each brick is $150. All bricks may be purchased for alumni individuals/spouses, family alumni, or a memorial for deceased family member(s) or teachers.
