February 28, 2018

Dear ,

Two weeks ago, the unthinkable happened in Parkland, Florida. As an educator, each of these tragedies is a reminder of just how precious life can be and the need to be prepared to meet any situation that may arise. As a result, Sacred Heart administration and staff will be doing the following to ensure that all members of Sacred Heart will be safe:
  • Review all school emergency policies
  • Conduct drills to ensure that all are prepared

If there are any questions or concerns relating to school safety, please do not hesitate to contact myself or the School Advisory Committee, so that Sacred Heart will continue to be the safe learning community that we all value.

Thank you and God Bless,

Mr. Yee

Sacred Heart Think First Be Safe School Program

Sacred Heart plans to teach our students the acclaimed Child Lures/Think First/Be Safe School Program.  This personal safety program is currently used in over 1000 school systems nationwide and is part of the curriculum recommended by the Archdiocese of Detroit.  It has been featured on national television shows, including Oprah, NBC Today Show, CNN and 48 Hours.
The Program improves self-reliance, raises self-esteem and helps students master personal safety skills- all while reassuring them that most people are kind, safe and committed to their well-being.  Students learn to identify specific lures used in crimes against youngsters and how to employ proven prevention strategies.  The Program also teaches Internet Safety, Drug Resistance, and School Violence Prevention.
The material covered is age appropriate and reflects our Catholic beliefs.  If you have any questions, or would like to review the materials please contact your child's homeroom teacher before March 6th.  After that date, teachers will begin their Think First Be Safe instruction with students.  If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate in this program, please return the OPT-Out form by March 6th.

Sacred Heart School

Back in September, the Manwell Family shared this letter (re-printed below) with the Sacred Heart Community. Riley Manwell is in Mrs. Bertini's 5th grade class at Sacred Heart, and Blake Manwell, who is an 8th grader at U of D Jesuit Academy, is well known to many Sacred Heart families and students, as he attended Sacred Heart through grade six. Many Sacred Heart School families have already volunteered and have helped out by providing frozen, make-ahead crock pot meals that Jean can use as needed. The Manwells have found these meals very helpful, and both Jean and Justin have expressed their sincere appreciation.
Since the meals have worked out so well, we are sending out another Sign-Up Genius form, in the hopes that our school community can continue our support for the Manwells as Justin continues with his chemotherapy treatments.
If you are able to help, please visit the Sign-Up Genius Page which can be found at:

Safe Environment At Sacred Heart School
Each school day, our nation's schools are entrusted to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for approximately 55 million elementary and secondary school students. Lessons learned from school emergencies highlight the importance of preparing school officials and first responders to implement emergency operations plans. By having plans in place to keep students and staff safe, schools play a key role in taking preventative and protective measures to stop an emergency from occurring or reduce the impact of an incident. Although schools are not traditional response organizations, when a school-based emergency occurs, school personnel respond immediately. They provide first aid, notify response partners, and provide instructions before first responders arrive. They also work with their community partners, i.e., governmental organizations that have a responsibility in the school emergency operations plan to provide a cohesive, coordinated response. Community partners include first responders (law enforcement officers, fire officials, and emergency medical services personnel) as well as public and mental health entities. in public and nonpublic schools. Families and communities expect schools to keep their children and youths safe from threats (human-caused emergencies such as crime and violence) and hazards (natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and accidents). In Sacred Heart's continuing effort to maintain as safe school environment we will be doing extra practice drills with the students.
What parents can do to help?
You, as parents, can also help Sacred Heart School maintain a safe environment by always signing in and out of the office when you are in the school, always wear a volunteer or visitor badge while in the school, always follow the directions of a the staff when asked to do so. If you are in the school during a practice drill (fire, tornado, lock down) follow the directions of the staff.  Please always be aware of the outside surrounding area of the school and if you see anything please contact the school office or it need be the Dearborn Police.  When entering the school building, please be aware of anyone behind you and if do not let them in if you do not know them or feel comfortable in letting them in.
