Sunday Service - 10:00 AM January 7
UnLearning

"It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so." Can our practice of living into the inherent worth of every person be hindered by "what you know for sure?"

Our Whole Loves (OWL)  Parents Orientation Meeting
Sunday, January 14, 12:30-2:00PM

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Santa Cruz County is offering this program for youths grades 7-9.

Parents are children's primary teachers, but what is society teaching our children about sexuality? Our Whole Lives is an antidote to sexualized media messages, peer pressure, misinformation and prejudice. It provides accurate, age-appropriate information, puts sexuality in the context of values and personal responsibility, supports healthy decision making, and strengthens social skills. These skills and values help prepare youth to make healthy choices for life.

More information here, or email Lorraine Sandoval-Vigil ( [email protected])
Book Club

Our first meeting for 2018 will be January 18 at 10:30A at UUFSCC on Freedom Blvd.

If it is a sunny warm day we will meet in the patio. If it is a wintery day, we will meet in the Gallery.

Our book for January is The Country Life by Rachel Cusk. It is a rich and subtle novel about embarrassment, awkwardness, and being alone; about families or the lack of them; and about love in some peculiar guises.

Please join us for a lively discussion which usually lasts about an hour. Bring your own cup of coffee or tea.

Film to Table Benefit
Saturday, February 10th 5:00 to 8:30 pm

The next Film to Table Benefit will present The One Hundred Foot Journey. This delightful and entertaining film has a deeper message that resonates well with our February UU Principle study of "Justice, equity and compassion in human relations".

After leaving India due to a fatal tragedy, the Kadam family finally settles in a small town in southern France. There they set up a traditional family Indian restaurant that unfortunately puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory's acclaimed Michelin star establishment one hundred steps across the street. The resulting rivalry escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In the end, there is a bridging of sides, both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change all of them forever.

The evening will begin with hors d'oeuvres and drinks at 5 pm, then the screening followed by dinner and a curated discussion about the film.

Dinner $45
Deadline to make a reservation: February 4, 2018.

Register online here or after the service at the Fellowship starting Sunday, January 7.
New Small Group Ministry Program
Starting in February 2018

I believe we can change the world if we start listening to one another again...Simple, truthful conversation where we each have a chance to speak, we each feel heard, and we each listen well. - Margaret Wheatley

Small Group Ministry provides an opportunity to explore deeper spiritual questions and to express our Unitarian Universalist principles and values in the congregation and in the larger community. Within the framework of groups of 8 to 10 people, Small Group Ministry allows us to be present in each other's lives in an open, supportive, and nurturing environment.

About the groups:
* Meet once a month for a one-year commitment in a private home or at the Fellowship.
* Have a trained facilitator and use a regular format.
* Participants covenant how to relate to each other, how to serve the congregation and how to serve the community.

Groups will begin meeting the week of February 5, 2018 . Registration will take place after Sunday Services beginning January 7 or online on the Fellowship website here

The final date to register is Sunday, January 28. Questions? Please call Ann 831-359-8096 or Sangye 831-345-2004.
January Shared Plate Collection

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has selected the Pajaro Valley Women's Shelter in Watsonville for our Shared Plate Collection in January.  Their mission is to assist homeless women, children, and families to obtain stable housing through temporary shelter and services. By lifting their dignity, identifying their barriers, and helping to set their goals, homeless families will develop the skills and attitudes necessary to move on to stable housing and improved economic self-sufficiency.

More information about the Pajaro Valley Women's Shelter can be found here.
Exploring the Bible

A four-session study group led by Robert Strayer
2nd and 4th Mondays in January and February
10:00 - 11:30 am in the Gallery at the UU Fellowship

This is a continuation of the "Exploring the Bible" study group led by Bob Strayer earlier this year. Each session looks at a passage of the Bible with a focus on how it resonates in our lives today and on its relevance to our contemporary context. This is not an academic study, but rather an exploration of how the language of the Bible speaks to us now and how it can inform our spiritual quest.

Bob Strayer has been a well-received guest speaker numerous times at our Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday service. He has a Ph.D in History from UW Madison. He is a long time professor of world history, with a particular interest in religious themes; author of "Ways of the World", a widely used world history textbook; a participant in various interfaith activities; and a member of La Selva Beach Community Church and Progressive Christian Forum.

Please email Ann at [email protected] if you are interested in joining the group - there is still room available.
