Principal's Message

Student leadership is alive at Los Perales. Safety Patrol is up and running, Student Council members led our January Spirit Assembly and will begin weekly announcements, and the Kindness Club painted Buddy Benches for our playgrounds... the list could go on and on!

Last week we had our first lockdown drill of the year. I wanted to share part of the wording that I used. Please remind your students that it is very important to listen for directions and remain quiet during drills.

Every day, we do things to keep ourselves safe. Another way we stay safe is by practicing for things that probably won't happen but it is good to be prepared for just in case. One way we do this at school, for instance, is by practicing fire drills and earthquake drills. Practice helps us know what to do just in case of an emergency and makes the safest choice automatic. The bad things probably won't happen, but when we practice, we know what to do just in case.

Today, we will practice this in a drill called a "lockdown drill." During this drill, the teachers lock us inside for safety. Some reasons we might have a lockdown drill is when we need to keep you safe from a stray dog/animal loose on campus, something happening down the street that we need to make sure is safe, or a stranger while you are at school. These would probably never happen but just like a fire drill, we can practice our response so we are prepared.

Here are the steps of what we do during a lockdown drill: The acronym is PAL.

P is for PAUSE: First, pause and take a deep breath. Breathing helps your mind work.

A is for ADULT: Wherever you are on campus, find a trusted adult. If you are in the classroom, stay there with your teacher or other adult in the room. If you are outside, look for the teacher or other adult closest to you to tell you what to do and where to go. Find the closest classroom if you are outside.

L is for LISTEN: Listen to the adult's instructions. The adult will know what to do and will tell you. This is trickier than a fire drill because depending on where you are, you won't always go to the same place each time. You will know what to do if you listen. Also during this time, the teachers will lock the doors to their classrooms. When everything is safe, the adult will tell you that everything is all clear and we can go back to our regular school day.

Please make sure that your children are not dropped off before 8:10 unless they are going to Panther. We do not have supervision before 8:10.

Readathon Chair Needed!

Stacked Books Do your kids love the readathon? Are you looking for a way to help out with the LP PTA?  We have an immediate need for a Readathon Chair for this year. This popular event encourages reading at all age levels and serves as a fundraiser for our school. Duties include working with PTA to determine dates, preparing all collateral/publicity for event (previous event documents are available), handling tallies of participation and fund collection from participating students. If you are interested in serving as Readathon Chair for this spring, please contact us at  losperalesptaprez@gmail.com .  Dates are flexible and responsibility spans approximately three weeks. Without your help, we won't be able to put this event on for this year.  Your help is much appreciated! Thank you!

Attention Science Fair Participants!

Science Fair Boards are available in the office.  You should have received your approved Science Fair application in Friday folders last week.  On the yellow piece of paper which was attached to the application, there is a Science Fair Number in the upper right hand corner.  You will NEED this SCIENCE FAIR NUMBER in order to pick up your board in the office. Be sure to bring it with you, so you will be given the appropriate board. Only one board is given per project. Boards will be available for pickup through this Friday, March 2nd.  The office closes at 4 p.m. each day, so make sure to pick it up before that time. If you have questions, please contact Davina Roche or Janelle Chng.

Table Talk Question:

Ask your student when s/he had a recent peer conflict. Then ask how they were (or could've been) a part of the solution in the interaction. Be sure encourage your students to take responsibility for their part of conflicts and to avoid "blame shifting".

HERE is a great article about on how to encourage your child(ren) to take responsibility for their actions.

Books, costumes and dogs!

It is Read Across America week in the Los Perales library.  During the week, we celebrate the importance of sharing stories, reading out loud and the role service and therapy dogs play in our community. Our guests from ARF, with their Pet Hug Pack dog, will be talking with each class about service and therapy dogs, introducing the dog they bring to the class and sharing a picture books about service and therapy dogs with the students, Helping Dogs by Mary Ann Hoffman. We will also be reading The Year of the Dog: Tales from the Chinese Zodiac written by Oliver Chin and Made for Each Other: Why Dogs and People Are Perfect Partners by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent.
