Message from Superintendent: School Walkouts and Safety
Every one of us cares about children and cares deeply about the safety of our schools, which is why the recent tragedy in Florida continues to weigh heavily on our hearts.

Our educators play a crucial role and are encouraged to engage our youth in constructive dialogue, activities, and learning as the nation seeks solutions. Understandably, this nationwide conversation is emotionally and politically volatile, and there are growing calls for organized school walkouts.

When students advocate for an issue they feel passionate about, it can be a powerful learning experience. Many may be drawn to the idea of showing solidarity in support of the victims of the Florida shooting, and we are proud that our students want to exercise their First Amendment rights to express their views on this important topic. We also recognize that some students may not want to participate in a walkout and would prefer to stay in class. We want to ensure that all students feel safe and respected, no matter what they choose to do. Additionally, there are serious safety issues presented by students leaving campus in the middle of the school day.

Vista del Lago raises $2,300 in pennies for cancer patients
A Pennies for Patients fundraiser held at Vista del Lago High raised nearly $2,300 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the  American Cancer Society.

Teresa Rexin led this year's fundraiser for Vista's Kickin' Cancer and Relay for Life Clubs by organizing friendly competitions between 60+ advisories, weekly guessing jars, and $1 donations for the Wall of Hope to Beat Cancer.

Rexin collaborated with key officers: ASB President, Jordan Kane and other school clubs, Alyssa Wang from the California Scholarship Federation (CSF),  and Luke Lazzarini with the Leo Club. The group recruited student volunteers for the three week long school-wide event to raise generous donations to help cancer patients. They had support from club advisers Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Kleinle, and Mrs. Quinton.

You're invited: Review history social science pilot textbooks
The public is invited to review and provide input on pilot instructional materials before a final recommendation is made for use in the District's history and social sciences classes next year.

When:
Thursday, March 15, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Where:
Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova. Representatives from each of the publishing companies will be available during the event to answer questions.

Background: At the beginning of the school year, the District organized two committees - one elementary, one secondary - to review new instructional materials submitted by publishers to the State Board of Education. Using criteria taken from the state's History Social Sciences Framework, teachers selected two programs to pilot in their classrooms. Elementary teachers chose Pearson's "My World Interactive" and Teacher Curriculum Institute's "Social Studies Alive." Secondary teachers chose to pilot Pearson's "My World Interactive" and McGraw Hill's "Impact California."

What happens next: Each program will be piloted in certain FCUSD classrooms for several weeks, and teachers were provided with notification letters for families. Starting March 15, the pilot materials will be available for review by the public until
April 6. Teachers and the District will make a recommendation to the Board of Education later next month.

Classroom Snapshots: Harlem Renaissance and Black History
Folsom Cordova's teachers strive daily to make lessons come alive and engage students in learning that celebrates diversity and differences - helping students better understand and prepare for the world around them. For some educators, this year's Black History Month was an additional opportunity to dig even deeper into rich cultural contributions.

One example: U.S. History students at Vista del Lago High School recently explored the long-lasting literary and cultural contributions of African American artists whose work rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance era.

Vista students learned about the social trends and innovations that shaped popular culture in the 1920s in works of art, music and literature. They studied literature from Langston Hughes, artwork by Palmer Hayden and jazz music by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith to name a few of the many African American artists they studied.
