With the official arrival of spring later this month, we invite you to step outside and take advantage of the Museum's new exhibitions and programs. On March 1st we celebrate the opening of Second Sight: The Paradox of Vision in Contemporary Art, curated by Ellen Y. Tani, the Museum's Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow. At the end of the month, we look forward to unveiling  Reading Room: Experiments in Collaborative Dialogue and Archival Practice in the Arts, curated by June Lei '18 and Hailey Beaman '18. In addition to programming connected with these important projects, we are excited about welcoming to campus Dr. Richard Kurin, Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large at the Smithsonian Institution, who will provide new perspectives on the Museum's historic Assyrian Collection on March 6th. This lecture is generously supported by the Yadgar Family Endowment. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Second Sight: The Paradox of Vision in Contemporary Art

Opening March 1, 2018

This exhibition explores the experiential, psychological, and metaphorical implications of the nonvisual in American art from the 1960s to today. It asks why and how numerous visual artists, such as William Anastasi, Robert Morris, Joseph Grigely, and Lorna Simpson, challenge the primacy of vision as a bearer of perceptual authority.

Welcome New Interns!

The Museum of Art is delighted to welcome four new energetic, creative, and dedicated students to its team of interns this semester. Their addition increases the total number of student interns to ten this semester. These include Student Collections Assistant, Nicolás Hibbard '21; Special Projects Assistant, Sarisha Kurup '21; Student Assistant to the Curator, Maria McCarthy '20; and Student Assistant to the Curator, Eliza Nitzan '18. The Museum looks forward to learning from their fresh perspectives.
Engravings by Maria Sibylla Merian Acquired

The Museum of Art is excited to have recently acquired four early eighteenth-century hand-colored engravings by Maria Sibylla Merian (German, 1647-1717). Merian was an expert botanist and naturalist, and these four works demonstrate her passion and fascination with the natural world. All four works derive from Merian's 1699 expedition from her native Frankfurt to Suriname, in South America. She was recently divorced, and undertook the journey with her daughter out of intellectual interest and financial necessity.
