Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 02 20 18

P arents and Guardians,

I hope you and your student had a great four-day weekend. Christy and I took the opportunity to spend some time with my extended family in Oklahoma. It was a fun weekend of riding four wheelers, cutting firewood, and catching up with family.

It was great to see so many of you come out for our Showcase event last Monday. Attendance at both the parent information sessions and the Showcase was strong. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue our work to improve our communication about opportunities available to students at LHS. As our counselors begin registration this week, we believe efforts like Showcase will help students make informed choices about which classes they select for next year.

Please take a few minutes to read below about student successes and important events. Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

The Foundation is funded primarily from Annual Appeal and the Denim and Diamonds (D&D) Gala and Auction. The Foundation's goal this year is to cover D&D costs with sponsorships prior to the night of the event so all monies spent at the event go directly to fund classroom grants.

The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.

LHS Bowling

The bowling team wrapped up their regular season last week as they bowled against Allen High School.

The varsity boys fought a tough match, with Michael Stephens, Mason Melendez, and Noah Cooper winning their individual matches before falling to Allen in the team event 5-10.  Unfortunately the boys finish 4th place in district, missing the 3rd place cut-off to advance to regionals.

The varsity girls knew they were up against one of the top ranked teams in Texas, and gave the Allen girls a run for their money.  Allen had not given up more than 8 points all year long, but Sydney Sleeper and Kaitlyn Cinek won their individual matches and the whole team won one of the team games, taking a total of 4 points (the most of any team this season) from the Allen girls.

Congratulations  to Sophomore Noah Cooper on finishing 6th place overall in singles, earning him a spot at the regional tournament.  Noah will be bowling for a chance to advance to the state championship against 15 other boys from the North Texas region.  Please come cheer for Noah as he continues his journey on March 4th at Rowlett Bowl-A-Rama, time TBD.

Lovejoy Junior World Affairs Council (JWAC)

Seven students attended the Dallas World Affairs Council's WorldQuest Competition last Thursday at UT Arlington and performed well, competing with 90+ other teams from schools in our area.  This is our third year to participate and our second year to bring two teams.  While Plano West and Allen took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Lovejoy had its best showing yet with Team 1 ranking 12th (Zach Brown, Meredith Ehlmann, Jerad King, Autumn Purcell), and Team 2 ranking 29th (Austin Spruell, Daniel Xue, Abigail Xue).  This competition consisted of 100 multiple choice questions covering the following topics: NAFTA; ASEAN at 50; India's Bid for Global Power; Combating Climate Change; Cybersecurity; Saudi Arabia; The Peacebuilding Toolkit; America's Diplomats; The Future of Europe; Trade, Jobs, and Politics; Conflict in the South China Sea; Saudi Arabia in Transition; U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum; Latin America's Political Pendulum; Prospects of Afghanistan and Pakistan; Nuclear Security; Continuity and Change in American Foreign Policy; Current Events.  Please congratulate these students for their preparation, for their positive representation of Lovejoy, and for their achievement.

LHS Wrestling
High School results from the Regional Championships:
Our men and women battled it out in Bryan with the rest of the tough Regional competition.  We had 8 men and 5 women who wrestled in the tournament.  We had 8 wrestlers who placed with 6 qualifying automatically for the state tournament and one alternate!  Our men's team ended up finishing 10th overall out of 36 teams and our women's team finished 2nd overall out of 28 teams.  This is the highest finish by Lovejoy at the regional tournament ever!
The five women who brought home this best ever finish were:  Lilly Musselman, Charis Vela, Katherine Heath, Alex LeFort, and Morgan Elvin.  Heath just narrowly missed placing, losing a tough match in the round of 8.

Freshman Charis Vela put together another strong performance on her way to a 4th place finish and a state birth.  Junior Lilly Musselman won her second consecutive bronze medal at the regional tournament and in so doing, advanced to the state tournament for a third consecutive year!

Sophomore Alex LeFort and Junior Morgan Elvin both capped off another record-setting day by winning regional championships!  They both won all four of their matches by pin and helped lead our team to the runner-up finish.  Both will be a #1 seed next week at the state tournament in their respective weights.  For LeFort, this will be her first state tournament.  Elvin, like Musselman, advanced to her third straight state championship tournament!

On the men's side, six of the eight wrestling advanced to the second day, with four placing in the top 6.  Sophomore Joe Ridgeway and Junior Austen Shelley both won matches, but failed to advance past day one.  Junior Johnny Dorlon and Sophomore David Gold both fell just short of placing, losing in the round of 8.  Both wrestlers had solid wins in the tournament.

Freshman Jakob Underwood had an inspiring run to a 6th place finish.  Underwood beat some tough competition and became only the second freshman in our men's team history to place at the regional tournament.

Senior James Ayers placed for the third time at the regional tournament, finishing 5th in his weight class and becoming a state alternate.

Freshman Ralph Rucker kept his season-long streak alive of placing in the top 3 of every tournament.  Rucker finished with the bronze medal and becomes only the second freshman ever to qualify for the state tournament in the history of Lovejoy men's wrestling.  Rucker's 4-1 record moves his season total for wins to 35, a new freshmen record and second best all-time for a single season.

Sophomore Hunter Duncan put together another impressive run to the regional championship match, where he fell just short, losing a close decision and finishing with the silver medal.  Duncan will wrestle in the state tournament for the second consecutive year, having done so as a freshman last year.  Duncan will look to improve upon last season's finish next week in Cypress.

Good luck to all of these wrestlers this week at the Berry Center in Cypress at the State Championships!

Here is a list of all of our Leopard individual placers:
6th - Jakob Underwood
5th - James Ayers
4th - Charis Vela
3rd - Lilly Musselman, Ralph Rucker
2nd - Hunter Duncan
Champion - Alex LeFort, Morgan Elvin

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.

Once we have received the email, we will call you for verification, and the email will provide us with the needed documentation for our records.
