Sunday, January 7
This Sunday we will ponder the magi's visit to the baby Jesus. What does their journey and
visit teach us about the significance of the incarnation? What have been the important journeys in your life and what have they taught you about yourself and about God? We will celebrate communion together and receive star words to guide us throughout the coming year. Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is "Guided" and our lay worship leader is Chris Langmack.

Isaiah 60:1-6 and
Matthew 2:1-12
.
Children will remain in worship. After worship, come to the reception room for a piece of birthday cake in honor of Reathel McWhorter's 90th birthday on January 9th.

Our music features two prominent hymns for the Epiphany. The first, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star, was written by Philipp Nicolai in 1597 (org. German, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern), author of the famous Advent hymn Sleepers Wake. The text is a paraphrase of Psalm 45 with a metaphorical expression of Jesus as the morning star. The 19th century hymn Brightest and Best of the Son of the Morning by Reginal Heber (author of Holy, Holy, Holy) is presented in an alternate choral anthem setting by British composer John Gardner (1917-2011).

(David Finkenthal's mother), Eliseo Hairston (Shirley Thompson's grandson deployed to the Pacific), Greg Madison, Navy Seal Luke McClain (Dr. bert Campbell's nephew, new father of twins, just deployed), Elizabeth Mierke, Ward Porch, Daniel Straffon (Cary Arden's grandson traveling to Myanmar), Tom Skrout (Stephanie Pennza's father), Liam Stewart (Mindy Stewart's nephew), Doug Weiss (Ann Williams' friend), and Sue Salvatore. Our sympathies and prayers are extended to the family of Phyllis Koons, who died on Tuesday in Cleveland, and to the Haiss-Bromelmeier family on the death of Fritz's mother, Anne Marie Haiss, who died on Wednesday at the age of 95. We pray for those struggling with illness, convalescing, or are homebound; the patients, family, and staff in our surrounding hospitals; and those who have placed prayer requests in our Carpenter's Box.

Congratulations to Carol Roe, who was elected
mayor
of Cleveland Heights this week at the first 2018 meeting of the Cleveland Heights City Council. Carol has served as a member of council since January 2016 and will serve a two-year term as
mayor
. She was sworn in by Judge Solomon Oliver (her law school mentor), with her right hand on her mother's Bible, held by her sister Shirley. Amy Starr Redwine was also standing with Carol for the swearing-in. In her remarks, Carol mentioned her appreciation for the love and support of her Covenant family, and for the ways church members and staff have challenged her to think and act on her faith.

Sunday, January 14, Worship at 10 am honoring MLK Day
Covenant pastors Melanie Marsh Baum and Amy Starr Redwine will present a dialogue sermon titled "On the Basis of Love," putting themes of Martin Luther King, Jr's life and writings in conversation with scriptures. The Cleveland School of the Arts' R. Nathaniel Dett Concert Choir, Dr. William Woods, director, will be participating in the service along with the Covenant Choir.

We are currently accepting items for the 2018 Homeless Stand Down which will take place on Saturday January 20th. The following items may be dropped off in the church office from now until Wednesday January 17th:

On December 12, the Deacons hosted a festive luncheon at the Ernest J. Bohn Senior Center, complete with homemade cookies, carol singing, and gifts provided by our Covenant community through our Giving Tree. Thank you Deacons!
