ASSOCIATE’S CORNER
The Season of EPIPHANY
In western Christian tradition,
January 6
is celebrated as
Epiphany Day
. It goes by other names in various church traditions. In Hispanic and Latin culture, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as
Three Kings’ Day
(Span:
el Dia de los Tres Reyes
,
la Fiesta de Reyes
, or
el Dia de los Reyes Magos;
Dutch:
Driekoningendag
). The
Season
of Epiphany goes on until Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. This year Epiphany which began last Sunday has six weeks, lasting through February 14 as the “Last Sunday after the Epiphany.” Epiphany is the climax of the Advent/Christmas Season and the
Twelve Days of Christmas
, which are usually counted from the evening of December 25th until the morning of January 6th, the Twelfth Day. In some cultures, the night before the 12
th
day is observed with the baking of a special
King Cake
, and is part of the celebration of
Mardi Gras
or
Fat Tuesday
(French Catholic culture of the Southern United States, like New Orleans).
In traditional Christianity January 6 looks ahead to the mission of the Church to the world in light of the Nativity or the birth of Jesus. The term
epiphany
means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal," from the Greek επιφαηέω, to
shine upon
. It is when Jesus is “manifested” or “made known” to the world, as in the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple on February 2. In Western churches, it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King.
Symbols of Epiphany -
Epiphany is the season of Light, hence, Jesus as the Light of the world. The color for Epiphany Day is white or gold, the colors of celebration, newness, and hope. The rest of the Season is usually green.
The First Sunday after the Epiphany is observed as the Baptism of our Lord, and is one of the five occasions reserved by the Church for baptism in local congregations.
The traditional liturgical symbols of Epiphany are usually associated with the Magi. The symbols include either three crowns or a single crown, various portrayals of the Magi or Wise Men, three gifts, a five-pointed star, or a combination of a star and crown. A more modern symbol of Epiphany is a globe or a stylized portrayal of the world.

WILLIAM TEMPLE CENTER (WILLIE T'S)

We welcome dessert donations or if you would like to volunteer, call me at 409.599.1457 or wtecgalveston@gmail.com.
WILLIAM TEMPLE EPISCOPAL CENTER
Still Feeding and Serving 100 Students per Week
The Saturday prior to the Christmas holidays the UTMB students worshipped in the sanctuary, prepared for finals, had breakfast for dinner and made bandana chemo kits for cancer patients. The cook team has done a great job while Mike Ellis is on the mend. Theresa Reeves has really stepped up to the plate and spearheaded meal preparation most weeks and Ollive Shepherd has typed the recipes and put them in a notebook for easy reference to whomever the cooks may be. Buddy and Linda Fredrickson gifted us with 3 restaurant style drink dispensers that make us look professional.
Our William Temple students return this week and the hearty hot meals will commence. Again, thank you to our Willie T’s Team for their commitment: Erik Dill, Buddy and Linda Fredrickson, David Hughes, Bill Kennard, Ollive Shepherd, and new volunteer JaLene Thatcher Khambu and her family. Pictures were featured in the 1/7 E-messenger.

PARKING LOT USE
Trinity is privileged to be permitted use of the fenced parking lot across the street for weekly services and, with approval, for our special events. However, by owner’s terms, cars must leave the lot soon after services, lunches, weddings and funerals or risk being locked in behind the fence. We certainly encourage use of the parking lot, but caution those planning lunch or other offsite activities to please park elsewhere after church sponsored events. Thank you for helping us to be good neighbors with the new owners.
