Somers Library is gearing up for spring, with exciting classes and events for all ages. From early literacy programs for babies and preschoolers, book clubs and programs for children and teens, to lectures and presentations for adults, you will find that there is something for everyone. We recognize that the residents desire a wide variety of library services, and to that end would love to hear your thoughts. We invite you to have a conversation with us, letting us know the role the library has played in your life, and how you would like for that to continue.

Art Works by Maria Angeles Hegglin at the Somers Library. On display  in the library gallery from 2/20 - 3/31. Maria Angeles Hegglin is a self-taught neo-impressionist born in Cordoba, Spain and now living in New York. Her oils on canvas present an idyllic sun-splashed vision of the world. She is a landscape painter whose work is notable for its subtle colors and tactile surfaces that she accomplishes with a palette knife. Applying thick impasto directly to the canvas with strong strokes, she achieves a sensuous tactility that lends her compositions of lakes and mountains an appealing briskness and physical palpability. Come see her work hanging in the gallery at the library.

Poetry Workshop for Adults. T hursdays, 1/4 - 12/27, 11:00 - 12:30 pm. Beginner and experienced poets "will hold these truths to be self-evident" that all poems can be created using trial and error, and serendipity along with learning the processes of craft in this poetry workshop. Discover your muse as Thea Schiller introduces an established poem, leads discussions and creates in-class writing exercises, leaving time to write and share each week. Participating members will be encouraged to expand their repertoire of poems. 

2018 TED Talks at the Somers Library. Thursdays, 2/1, 3/1, 4/5, 5/3, 6/7, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Join host Eugene Ritchie in discussion after viewing two TED talk speakers each session who will speak on a specific topic. Professor Ritchie's mission is to provide a viewing, discussion, and inspirational forum for library members and the Somers Community of themed TED Talks designed for personal and professional growth. Each program consists of diverse speakers with short presentations of 10 and 21 minutes long. Each talk will be followed by light refreshment. Topics are: February 1 - Matters of the Heart: Tiffany Watt-Smith - The History of Human Emotions; Esther Perel - Rethinking Infidelity: A talk for Anyone Who Has Ever Loved. March 1 - Creativity Revisited: Adam Grant - The Surprising Habits of Original Thinkers; Marily Oppezzo - Want to be more Creative? Go for a Walk. April 5 - The Power of Fiction: Lisa Bu - How Books Can Open Your Mind;  Mac Barnett - Why a Good Book Is a Secret Door. May 3 - Feats That Inspire: Diana Nyad - Never, Ever Give Up; Bill Stone - I'm going to the Moon. Who's with me? June 7 - The Future: Juan Enriquez - What does the Future Look Like? Peter Calthorpe - 7 Principles for Building Better Cities. Registration is required.
 
Managing Your Career in Changing Times at the Somers Library. Thursdays, March 1 - April 26, 12:00 - 2:00 pm. The world of work is changing...do you need to plan for what's next??? Managing Your Career in Changing Times is a free 8-week seminar conducted by a professional career counselor. The seminars will teach how to: Take formal assessments to evaluate your interests and personality; Learn how to use career information to research industries and companies, Find out about educational/training programs, Learn about the latest trends in resumes and job search, Understand how to market yourself effectively. NOTE: Attendance at an orientation session on Thursday, February 15th is required. To register for this seminar, please call (914) 674-3612.
 
Spring Into Art at the Somers Library. Mondays, 3/5, 12, 19, 26, 4/9, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. Experiment making art using water-soluble oil pastels and watercolor pencils! Students will learn about the versatile ways each medium can create great effects. No experience required - join us and have fun! Inspirational music will accompany your creative journey.  Suggested Supplies List: Multi-media paper - 98 lb or higher, Water cup, Soft brush, Pencil, Eraser, Water-soluble oil Pastels - Portfolio, AND/OR, Water-soluble pencils(Fantasia, Staedtler, Intense (Derwent). There is a $30 fee to be paid on the first day of class. Make checks out to Judika Lieberman. 
 
The Amazing Power of a Crystal Clear Vision. Saturday, March 24, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. Start 2018 at The Vision Workshop and let this be your year for clarity, joy and fulfillment. Learn how to eliminate fear, doubt and worry and move toward your dreams with confidence and increased prosperity. Join Theresa Wienecke, Life Mastery Coach, as she leads this free interactive workshop. You will leave with your individualized 2018 Vision Statement.
 
Sport of a Lifetime at the Somers Library. Saturday, March 31, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Join author and tennis enthusiast Judy Aydelott as she shares anecdotes from her book, Sport of a Lifetime: Enduring Personal Stories From Tennis . Her book consists of interviews of tennis stars all over 50 years old, including well-known players such as Gardnar Mulloy, Mayor David Dinkins and Betty Eisenstein, who won tournaments well into her 90s! Be inspired by these stories to hone your tennis skills and get out on the court again. Registration is required; register online at www.somerslibrary.org or call 914-232-5717.
 
Ongoing Events 
 
Coloring Book Club for Adults. Relax, color, socialize - all for free at Somers Library! Materials are provided, or bring your own colored pencils and coloring books (recommended.) Registration is not required; meetings will be held in the conference room every Friday from 10:30-12:30. 
   
Westchester Writers. 6:30pm on the first, third and fifth Thursday of each month in the program room. Join a safe, supportive, and creative environment to share literary works in progress. This is not a writing class, but rather an ongoing group of writers offering assistance to its members who are looking to improve their writing skills through positive feedback and helpful critiques. Beginners as well as experienced writers over the age of 18 are welcome.

Teen Parent Talk - Understanding College Rankings: Thursday, March 8th 6:15 pm
(*Snow Date is 3/22 at 6:15 pm) - Math professor and SAT tutor, Mike Goodman presents the plusses and minuses of the popular college ranking formulas and explains how just 3 numbers tell you almost everything you need to know. This presentation is geared towards teens and parents of teens beginning their college search. Register using above link to our online calendar. 
 
Teen / Parent Talk: College Application Process from A-Z - Saturday, March 10th at 11:00 am - 1:00 pm @ the Somers Library - Presented by Neal Schwartz of College Planning of Westchester. Students are applying to more colleges than ever before and that has resulted in a significant drop in acceptance rates-especially at the top colleges. For the majority of high school seniors, it has become much more difficult to get into their first choice schools. So what can you do to best position your application? Topics include:  
  • What is the admissions office really looking for?
  • Common App Prompts
  • Common elements of great essays
  • How to bring your character into your personal statement
  • Supplemental essays and the rest of the application.
  • Tips on how to help your application stand out from the pack

Middle School Newsletter Club - Meets every other Tuesday from March 13 through May 22 from 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm - Do you like writing reviews for books, movies or music that you have enjoyed? Do you like to let others know about great restaurants or special events you have attended around our area? If so, then join us at the Somers Library for the opportunity to write for our newly created Middle School Newsletter! Published author and writing facilitator, Christine Adler will moderate this fun and informative group. Seating is limited.  Register using above link to our online calendar. 
 
App Design for Beginners (Teens) - Wednesday, March 14th from 6:15 - 7:30 pm. Ever wanted to make your own app? Come and learn how to create an unique software program through coding and design. See what goes behind graphical user interfaces and let your ideas happen! Digital Media Specialist, Austin Olney from the White Plains Public Library will be up in Somers to present this great program for teens & tweens in grades 6th and up! Teen: Intro to Fashion Design & Illustration Workshop - Wednesdays, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25 & 5/9 from 3:15 - 4:30. This class is a snapshot of what a fashion designer's job is all about. Each student will design a storyboard, a textile and a fashion illustration based on a theme of their choosing The final project will be a collage illustration which will be displayed at the library. Supplies needed:  
  • Drawing pad or paper
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors (sharp enough to cut fabric)
  • Things that inspire your creativity.
These supplies will be used for a fashion story/mood board. The following should be collected to brought to the library to the first class: small fabric scraps, trims, bits from nature, decorative buttons, sequins, inspiring photos and magazine clippings. This class is for teens in grades 6 and up.  Register using above link to our online calendar. 
Teen Cake Decorating with Liza - Saturday March 24th from 1:30 - 3:00 - Join us at the Somers library to decorate a banner - team spirit cake to take home with you!  With the instruction of cake decorator Liza Calderon, participants will use confectioners' tools to create a beautiful and delicious work of art!  This program is intended for teens / tweens in grades 6th and up!  Space is limited.  Register using above link to our online calendar. 
 
Admissions & Financial Aid: What it Takes to get into College Today - Wednesday, March 28th starting at 6:30 pm at the Somers Library - In this seminar, presented by College Planning 101, students and parents will learn the following: 
What it takes to get into college today including the financial aid system and how it works 
  • How to maximize your student's potential to receive scholarships, grants, & forms of merit-aid
  • The SAT & ACT tests and how colleges value them
  • What the more selective colleges really want to see on your student application. 
  • To make a timeline for success for where you should start in the college planning process
  • How it's possible to attend a private college for a public college price.

Ongoing Events
Foodie Club for Teens: Thursdays 3/8, 3/22, 4/19, & 5/3 from 3:15-4:30 pm.  Join us at the Somers Library to make snacks and small meals that the group can enjoy using the library staff kitchen. We will also be discussing and planning for the next meeting's meal while we are cooking! This program is for teens / tweens in grades 6th and up. Anime Nights! - Join us for a chance to watch anime from Crunchyroll with your friends! This program is for teens entering 7th grade & up!  Meets one Friday a month from 4:30 - 6:30  pm on the following dates  3/16, 4/13, 5/11, & 6/1

Anime Club: Every Wednesday starting 1/3 through 5/30 from 3:15-4:30 pm.  This program is for teens entering 7th grade & up! 
 
Teen/Tween Pokemon Club @ the Somers Library - Join us at the Somers Library to meet, discuss and battle your friends using your Nintendo 3DS (or even using your cards)! This program is for teens/tweens in grades 5th and up. The library will supply snacks and an opportunity to meet friends interested in Pokemon! Meeting dates are Fridays on the following dates: 3/2, 3/16, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11.

A new StoryWalk~from March 30-April 14! Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo by John Lithgow.  After you finish reading, come into the library for a cookie- supplied by Friends of Somers Library.  StoryWalk was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and has developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, Kellogg-Hubbard Library and Nancy Schulz, Vermont Bike & Pedestrian Coalition.

Art Gallery
Our featured artist this month is Maria Angeles Hegglin. Maria was born in Cordoba, Spain. She graduated in Economics and met her Swiss husband in London. Maria has lived with her three children in Switzerland, Canada and since 2001 in New York. In 2002, Maria started painting for the first time. Nature is what really talks to her. Maria considers herself a self-taught artist, and has been showing her art national and internationally. From Realism to Impressionism to Abstract, Maria's work has been changing and improving. By applying thick brilliant impasto with a palette knife in her paintings, she attains the freedom she always wanted to reach.

We Need Volunteers for the Week of the Book Sale. We are hosting a used book sale in April that will benefit the Somers Library, but we need your help to make it a success. We need lots of volunteers to help us move books from our storage facility to the library, to set up tables, unpack and organize books, and to work a shift during the sale.
